After 28 years in Urumqi, capital of Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, Asim Muhammad from Pakistan is usually considered a local by tourists, since Asim has the capacity to speak fluent Chinese. He also regards Urumqi as his second home considering his life-changing experience there. “If I hadn’t come here, I would have missed out on one of the most important people in my life.” he once noted.
When he first came to Xinjiang, he came across his wife Sayda Abliz. One year later, the two soon got married and settled down in Urumqi, opening a jewelry shop in 1994. Twenty-eight years of happy marriage have given them three children, and the youngest one was born in 2010, and Asim is full of pride for them.
Asim says traveling is one of the family’s favorite activities. His family has visited Pakistan, the United States, France as well as Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shenzhen in Guangdong province, and Shanghai. “Many cities have developed a lot in China. So has Urumqi.” Asim says. When he first came to the regional capital, there weren’t many tall buildings and the transportation facilities were inadequate, he says. Skyscrapers, high-speed trains and subways, he adds, have made life more convenient in the city.
With more tourists pouring into Xinjiang, Asim’s jewelry business has also experienced booming(急速的) development. Formerly, after he and his wife opened their shop at the International Grand Bazaar, it was a marketplace. But gradually, with help of the local government by offering funds, the bazaar was remodeled to highlight ethnic cultural elements. It has now been turned into one of Xinjiang’s most iconic(标志性的) tourist attractions, he says. He adds that, even though the economic crisis has hit the businesses there, he is still confident that things will pick up and he has been planning another family trip when he has spare time.
24. What makes Asim Muhammad look like a native in China
A. His Chinese-like lifestyle. B. His proficiency in Chinese.
C. His mixed Chinese bloodline. D. His appearance like a Chinese.

B. His family has traveled a lot for business affairs.
C. China’s cities have boomed a lot except Urumqi.
D. Transportation facilities are far from convenient.

A team from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School found that mice lacking a specific gene developed an unusually powerful form of brown fat tissue, which improved longevity and increased exercise capability by approximately 30%. The team is now working on a drug to replicate these effects in humans. “Exercise capability reduces as you get older, and to have a technique that could enhance exercise performance would be very beneficial for healthful aging,” said Stephen Vatner, senior author of the study in Aging Cell.
This study revealed brown fat enhances blood flow to muscles during physical activity. The genetically modified mice produced unusually high amounts of active brown fat and showed about 30% better exercise performance than normal mice, both in speed and time to exhaustion. The modified mice, which lack a protein called RGS14, live about 20% longer than normal mice, with females living longer than males. Even at advanced ages, they maintain a healthier appearance and witness no loss of hair and graying that appear in normal elderly mice. Their brown fat tissue also protects them from certain diseases.
The researchers also transplanted(移植) the brown fat to normal mice. They noted that the receivers gained similar benefits within days. Transplants using regular brown fat from normal mice, by contrast, took eight weeks to produce much slighter improvements.
The discovery could eventually prolong the total time when people enjoy good mental and physical health. Rather than develop a treatment that addresses aging broadly, Vatner said his team plans to test for specific benefits such as improved exercise capacity and metabolism(新陈代谢). In the meantime, techniques such as ice baths can increase brown fat naturally. Studies have found such efforts produced short-term benefits that range from enhanced immune system function to improved metabolic health; but Vatner said none of the studies have run long enough to find any effect on healthful aging.
28. What does the underlined word mean in paragraph 1
A. Exam. B. Copy. C. Lighten. D. Explain.
29. What did the study find about brown fat
A. It is produced by a certain protein.
B. It is used to treat specific illnesses.
C. It reduces exercise-related injuries.
D. It helps improve exercise tolerance.
30. Why were two different transplants conducted
A. To stress the chances of transplanting brown fat.
B. To show the underlying logic of transplanting.
C. To compare the results of two transplants.
D. To prove brown fat benefits normal mice.
31. What is Vater’s attitude toward deliberate cold exposure
A. Cautious. B. Unclear. C. Pessimistic. D. Approving.
D
When a duck sails across a pond, it may appear to be effortlessly crossing the water, but in fact, its hidden feet are working overtime to keep it afloat. It is this contrast of outward calm and hidden chaos that inspired the term “floating duck syndrome”(综合征). Beyond the name, it has little to do with ducks, instead describing how individuals advertise their achievements and mask the struggles behind them.
In a recent study, scientists investigated the phenomenon. “An increasingly common phenomenon in modern work and school settings is individuals taking on too many tasks and spending effort without corresponding rewards,” the study authors write. “Such an imbalance of efforts and rewards leads to negative consequences.”
To explain how this imbalance arises, the researchers built a mathematical model of social learning and modeled a world where people try to judge how much effort to put into their work without full knowledge of how much effort it will take to succeed. Researchers found individuals in the model mistakenly expected greater rewards for their effort than they actually received.
“Modern life constantly urges us to decide how to divide our time and energy between different domains of life. How we arrange our time and energy between these domains, how many different activities we pursue in each domain, and what the resulting rewards are, have significant effects on our mental and physical health,” Erol Akcay from the University of Pennsylvania said.
And the veneer(假象) of perfection on social media isn’t helping things. “Floating duck syndrome is often enhanced by social media platforms which make successes more visible but not necessarily the effort spent to achieve them.” Akcay added.
So what can we do to deal with the floating duck Tackling the root cause is the way to go. We need to stop underreporting effort in social learning dynamics and promote a culture of openness when talking about our successes and failures. That way, we should become more aware of the work required of us and less likely to spread ourselves too thin chasing unrealistic perfection.
32. What is paragraph 1 mainly about
A. How a person understands a term. B. How a concept comes into being.
C. Why a phenomenon inspires chaos. D. Why a person masks his struggles.
33. How does the researchers conduct the study to clarify the imbalance in paragraph 3
A. By theoretical modelling. B. By making a comparison.
C. By carrying out interviews. D. By analyzing a phenomenon.
34. What does Erol Akcay want to convey
A. The essence of mental reward. B. The side effects of social media.
C. The necessity of visible success. D. The underlying logic of perfection.
35. What can we do to escape floating duck syndrome
A. Cease pursuit of unreality. B. Perform the required work.
C. Be ambitious about dreams. D. Recognize others’ hard work.

However, many people are unsure how to start or what to journal about. 36 Those methods used when journaling just like handy tools help us navigate life’s challenges whether it’s finding clarity through writing or discovering resources like the best writing services.
When starting, you should keep it simple and focus on consistency. Although you might want to write long and perfect entries right away, it’s better to start small. If you try to be perfect from the start, you may get discouraged easily. 37

If you’ve been looking for a way to connect with yourself, grow personally, or simply process the ups and downs of life, journaling is an incredible tool to try. 40 So grab a journal, pick one of the journaling prompts above, and just start writing. Schatz burst into the house, his cheeks burning red. He looked extremely worn out and unsteady on his feet. “Dad, I think I need to lie down as I’m running a fever,” he whispered weakly, before collapsing onto the sofa. His father, who was in the living room, quickly came over. After touching the boy’s forehead gently, he immediately felt how hot it was and called the doctor. When the doctor came, he took Schatz’s temperature.
“What was it ” Schatz’ father asked worriedly.
“One hundred and two.” The doctor responded calmly, leaving three different medicines in different capsules with instructions for giving them.
“Just a mild flu.” The father comforted Schatz in a soft voice. He then handed Schatz the capsules he got from the doctor. “These will make you feel better soon.” The father continued. But the boy’s eyes stayed wide with terror. Instead of taking the medicine right away, he stared at the wall blankly, his breath coming in short with quick gasps(喘气) as if he was in great fear.
At noon, when the room was filled with the warm sunlight, Schatz, who had been quiet for a while, suddenly asked in a shaking voice. “What time will I die ” His father froze in shock and replied firmly. “Don’t be silly! It’s just a fever!” However, the boy seemed not to hear him. “I know I will die. At school in France the boys told me you can’t live with more than forty four degrees.” He started to whisper some indistinct French phrases from his textbook, looking more and more desperate.
The father was puzzled at first, but then suddenly realized: in France where Schatz studied, temperatures were measured in Celsius. The poor boy, with his limited knowledge, thought his 102℉ which actually meant 39℃, was a deadly temperature! Schatz’s father felt so sorry for his son’s misunderstanding and the fear that had been terrifying him all this time.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Seeing his son’s panic, the father rushed to the bookshelf.
That night, Schatz smiled for the first time all day.

第二节
Seeing his son’s panic, the father rushed to the bookshelf. With his heart beating wildly, he pulled out the encyclopedia and flipped to the temperature conversion page. Pointing at the numbers excitedly, his voice full of relief, he explained, “It’s the units that confuse you—102℉ equals only 39℃!” Schatz, whose eyes had been filled with terror, now stared at the page in disbelief. “Are you sure ” “Absolutely. It’s just like how 100 pennies make a dollar!” As understanding dawned, the frightened look faded from Schatz’s face.
That night, Schatz smiled for the first time all day. After taking the medicine, he felt much better physically and mentally. With the moonlight shining through the window, his father sat by his bedside reading stories. “Dad,” Schatz said sleepily, “Can you teach me more about temperatures tomorrow ” the father smiled and said gently, “Of course.” As Schatz drifted to sleep, the last thing he felt wasn’t fear, but the warm weight of his father’s hand resting lightly on his forehead and his burning curiosity for more knowledge and cultural difference.
