I was in line waiting to pay. In line there were two people before me. A little boy was buying some rather strange clothes. He chatted with anyone who was interested in the clothes and soon we learnt that he was going to a kindergarten (幼儿园) party. He had done a great job of putting together interesting costumes.
I noticed that the little boy was paying mostly with change. It seemed that he had robbed his pig bank (存钱罐) to do this shopping. However, the cashier told him he was short after counting all the money. The boy thought for a moment and said, “Please keep the shirt and I will come back with more money.”
It was clear that he had already used all the money he had and he was $8 short. The lady in front of me said, “Well, I could pay half of that.” I told the boy that I could pay the other half. We dug into our handbags. However, both of us only had ten-dollar bills (纸币) and we needed the cashier to get the change for us.
Other shoppers began digging into their pockets to find some change. It was amazing and touching as all these strangers seemed to react with the same mind. All wanted to be of help. Within minutes the cashier said, “I have too much money.” The cashier didn’t need our ten-dollar bills. Then the lady in front of me, who had been the first to offer help, said, “Wait! I didn’t even get a chance to give anything!”
I smiled at her and said, “You did your share, because it was your idea and you started all this.” The little boy smiled and thanked us. We wished him the best and he left. I was left with a good feeling. I had seen the love and goodness of others all around me. The woman in front of me smiled and said, “It sure feels good to give, doesn’t it ” I smiled back and said, “Yes!”

That cold January night, I was growing tired of my life in San Francisco. There I was walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. I was having trouble with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
As I was getting close to my flat, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise made me nervous, so I started to run faster. When I got home, I realized what the noise was. It was my wallet falling to the sidewalk (人行道).
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired any more. I ran out of the door and back to the place. I searched the sidewalk anxiously (焦急地) for fifteen minutes, but I didn’t find my wallet.
Just as I was going to give up the search, I heard a garbage truck stopped next to me. When a voice called from the inside, “Kerman Camacho ” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with a cheerful look in his eyes. “Is this what you’re looking for ” he asked, holding up a wallet.
It was nearly 3 a. m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn’t get much sleep that night, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place if people were willing to help each other.

Rota is a very small town in Spain. It is famous for its fruits and vegetables. In particular (特别地), it is famous for its tomatoes and pumpkins.
You may think that the soil here must be very good. It must be very rich in order to grow such excellent tomatoes and pumpkins. But the soil is not good. It is poor. It is only sand and rock— nothing more. The winds of the ocean blow hard. They have carried away the good soil. They have left only sand in its place. It is hard for you to find water. The soil is dry and hard.
The farmers have to work very hard. They work from morning till night. They dig wells at any place where there is water. They have to carry water to their gardens with their hands. They use anything and everything to make the soil a little richer around each plant. They cover the young plants with leaves. In this way they protect them from the sun and wind. They watch each plant carefully. They watch the plants which are not strong. They give these plants more water and attention. They love the plants like their wives or children.
