People have been enjoying the benefits of cycling(骑自行车) in Amsterdam for years. It is a good city for cycling because it is flat and there are plenty of places for bicycle parking. Today some people call Amsterdam “City of Bicycles” because of the convenience for bicycles there.
In the 1960s, a group of cycling fans had an idea. They believed that it would be better for everybody if cars weren’t allowed in the city center and only bicycles were. They were hopeful that this would help to save energy, reduce pollution and provide free public transport. The group painted hundreds of bicycles white and placed them in lots of neighborhoods around Amsterdam for people to use. Then a problem came-- thieves(小偷) took all the bicycles within weeks!
However, more than thirty years later, the “white bike’ is back in town--this time with a computer chip(芯片) to record its every move! To take a bicycle, you have to insert a special card. The new “ white bike” is not actually white but is an unusual design with bright colours. The bikes are parked at special parking places and people who want to use them have to take them to another special parking place that has enough room.
There is already less traffic in central Amsterdam, because both locals and tourists have been using the white bikes. Instead, thanks to the good ideas of lots of people, like the cycling fans in the 1960s, many people around the world have been enjoying city centre streets without cars many years.
28. Amsterdam is called the “City of Bicycles” because of_________.
A. the cycling fans there B. the appearance of bicycles
C. the quality of bicycles D. the convenience for bicycles
29. In the 1960s, some cycling fans hoped bikes could_________.
A. help to save energy B. be specially designed
C. be placed anywhere D. be painted in different colours
30. Why did the first “white bike” plan fail
A. People were tired of riding bikes.
B. There were not enough parking places.
C. Thieves took all the bikes within weeks.
D. The government allowed people to drive cars freely.
31. What do people use if they want to take a “white bike” in the city
A. A white key. B. A special card.
C. A special computer. D. A common chip.

Natural disasters take many different forms and can happen without warning. Earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, droughts, typhoons, and hurricanes are all natural disasters. Do you know how the natural disasters happened
The earthquake of 26 December 2004 resulted in one of the worst natural disasters in living memory. It was a massive (大规模的) underwater quake and occurred in the Indian Ocean. This caused a huge tsunami to cross the Indian Ocean. It destroyed coastlines and communities and brought death and destruction (破坏) to many people. The survivors needed fresh water, food and shelter as well as medical help. People from all over the world collect money to help them.
The surface of the Earth has not always looked as it does today; it is moving continuously although very slowly and has done so for billions of years. This is one cause of earthquakes, when one section of the Earth crashes with another. Scientists can predict (预测) where this might happen and the area between plates is called a fault line(断层线). However, earthquakes do not always happen on fault lines, which is why they are so dangerous and unpredictable.
All the disasters are very dangerous and continue to kill thousands of people each year, but they are not the most dangerous. One type of event in the earth’s history has regularly killed millions of beings: asteroid impacts (小行星撞击). About once every million years the Earth is hit by a piece of rock and ice from space large enough to cause massive destruction (including earthquakes, volcanoes and ice ages) and sometimes to kill entire species. Sixty-five million years ago more than half the earth’s species were killed by such a disaster, including all the dinosaurs. Disasters on the Earth may seem dangerous, but the biggest danger to humans is likely to come from outer space.
What did the Indian Ocean earthquake cause
A.A hurricane. B.A typhoon. C.A volcanic eruption. D.A tsunami.
33. What can scientists predict about earthquakes
A.The possible time. B.The possible place.
C.The possible damage. D.The possible frequency.
34. Where will the most dangerous natural disaster come from according to the author
A.The ocean. B.The poles.
C.Outer space. D.Deep under the surface.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A.How natural disasters happened
B.Where natural disasters happened most
C.When people should avoid natural disasters
D.What kind of natural disasters are most destructive

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给的段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was a little boy, I didn’t seem to be good at anything so that I felt inferior (较差的). I longed to achieve something to prove to myself that I am a capable person. So, I took part in various competitions, hoping to experience the excitement of victory and boost my self-esteem (自尊).
Unfortunately, I never succeeded in any of these competitions. This constant failure led me to feel discouraged. Feeling upset, I wanted to give up trying altogether. When my father noticed my disheartened spirit, he decided to step in and help me.
One sunny Saturday afternoon, he took me to a carnival held by our local community center. Every year, our town eagerly awaited this carnival, which was organized to raise funds for local charities. The carnival featured a wide range of delicious foods, exciting rides, games, music, and other attractions.
My dad led me to a colorful tent at the carnival. Inside, a game was set up specifically for children. The game involved throwing rings(套圈) onto bottles to win prizes. An elderly man with a kind face was in charge of the game. It was still early, and no other kids were around yet. My dad pushed me forward and encouraged me to give it a try. I approached the old man nervously and asked, “How do I play this game ” He smiled warmly and explained, “It’s simple and fun. Just throw these rings and try to get them over the bottles. If you manage to get even one ring on a bottle, you’ll win a prize of your choice.” I then asked about the cost of the game. The old man replied, “It’s five dollars for ten rings.” My dad handed me the money quickly, and I passed it to the old man, who then gave me a bundle of ten rings. I took a deep breath and threw out my first ring. It missed the bottle completely, landing on the ground with a soft sound. Ring after ring, I missed each attempt. Sweat began to form on my forehead, and my hands trembled.

五 应用文范文:
Dear fellow students,
With the development of modern industry, the environment is becoming increasingly worse. It’s high time that we should take measures, or we would have nowhere to live. We students can protect our environment by living a low-carbon life.
Firstly, do turn off lights and other switches when not using them to save electricity. What’s more, if we go out, we should walk, ride or take public transport instead of driving. Finally, reusing paper and bottles in our daily life is also highly recommended.
Let’s make joint efforts to create a green and harmonious environment. I strongly believe that better world owes to the commitment and dedication of everyone.
六 读后续写参考范文:
With only one ring left, I was very nervous. Sensing my anxiety, my dad came over and patted my shoulder. “It’s okay, son,” he said gently. “Take a deep breath, focus on your aim, and don’t rush.” He guided me on how to adjust my pose and aim more carefully. Encouraged, I took a deep breath and threw the final ring. To my astonishment, it landed perfectly around the bottle. The old man clapped and handed me a small, colorful prize.
I held the prize tightly in my hands, with a huge smile spreading across my face. At that moment, I realized that with perseverance and patience, I could overcome my self-doubt. This experience at the carnival became a turning point, teaching me that I was capable after all, and I was no longer the boy who felt inferior. It was not just about winning a small prize; it was a life-changing moment. Since then, every challenge I encounter becomes an opportunity to prove myself. I approach them with courage and confidence, knowing that I have the power to overcome obstacles, just like I did with that final ring.
