Novels for Nature Lovers
Serious fiction has been linked with urbanity. Many novelists seemingly don’t even try to get nature right. But there are fictions writers out there who write well about the natural world.
Where the Crawdads Sing
It begins with a young woman living a semi-feral(半野生的) existence in coastal North Carolina. There is murder and romance and vivid characters. But there’s also wildlife and ecology and nature observation. Field guide illustrations (插图) play a central role throughout the story.
When the Killing’s Done
This novel is based loosely on a real conservation project in which The Nature Conservancy played a role: the removal of invasive pigs from California’s Channel Islands to allow the recovery of native wildlife. The plot centers on a national park biologist committed to recovering island foxes and an animal rightist wanting to stop the killing of pigs at any cost.
The Overstory
This Pulitzer-winning novel tells the story of nine strangers, connected by the power of trees, who join across time and space to fight against a environmental disaster. A scientist with a hearing disability discovers that trees communicate with one another. A soldier fighting in the Vietnam War is saved when he falls from his aircraft into the bows of a banyan tree.
The White Bone
Mud and her group of elephants are walking through a land hit by drought. They pass by the bodies of other elephants that have been terribly harmed. The rains are late, and the dry land looks strange. Their memories seem to be falling apart. They are searching for the white bone, which will show the elephants a safe place.

Shark attacks in the screen are amazing. That’s because you actual chances of ever being attacked by a shark are mere one in 11.5 million. That’s roughly the same as your chances of winning an Oscar, which makes shark attack survivor, Mike Coots both incredibly unlucky and lucky: When Mike was 18, he lost his leg to a shark bite.
“I was attacked by a tiger shark in late October 1997. It was near my home on the island of Kauai — a typical fall morning with friends. The waves were really good so nothing was stopping us.” That is until a large shark came right up under Mike and sank his teeth into Miko’s lower leg. As he tried to free himself, the shark bit down harder, shaking its head back and forth and tossing Mike around like a rag doll. Mike followed his instinct: He struck the shark in the face, again and again until the shark released him. As Mike swam back into shore, he realized his lower right leg was gone. Mike’s friends rushed to his aid, and sent him to the hospital.
As soon as Mike was well, he did what many of us might consider unthinkable: he started riding the waves again. In fact, his first time back was near the site of his attack. But Mike was unshaken. Instead, he was curious — why was he attacked His curiosity led him to research sharks, and Mike did learn something that would change his life: Humans are far more dangerous to sharks than the other way around.
His situation as a shark survivor empowered him to give sharks a voice, Mike says. He began working with the Hawaii state authorities to help pass a ban on shark-derived products (鲨鱼制品). “I partnered with other like-minded shark attack survivors and marine biologists, and we headed to Washington to urge senators (参议员) to create a nationwide bill protecting sharks.”
4. Why does the author show the chances of being attacked by sharks
A. To inform readers of some relevant knowledge.
B. To highlight Mike’s unusual experience of the shark attack.
C To attract people to watch shark attacks in the screen.
D. To show everyone has the chance of winning an Oscar.
5. How did Mike survive the shark attack
A. By screaming loudly for his friends’ help.
B. By swimming desperately to the shore.
C. By hitting the shark hard continually.
D. By shaking its head up and down to get away.
6. What came to mind when Mike rode the waves again
A. To find out the reason for his being attacked.
B. To over come his fear of sharks.
C. To prove humans are more dangerous than sharks.
D. To research on how sharks attack humans.
7. What did Mike do to protect sharks
A. He passed a ban on shark-derived products.
B. He urged shark attack survivors to protect sharks.
C. He tried to help the authorities to protect sharks.
D. He signed a nationwide bill in Washington.

Of the many colorful Romanian traditions that are brought to life every year, the Bear Dance is one of the most inspiring. This folk tradition dates back to thousands of years ago.
Traditionally, the arrival of the “bears” is announced by a small group of “irozi” who blow whistles to a rhythm (节奏) set by the head bear tamer (训兽师). Chosen for his leadership skills, the head tamer is the one who decides when each of the acts is played and gives the signs.
The “bears” dance to the beat set by the flutes and the drums. Wearing the special costumes (戏服) requires strength and confidence, with the heaviest of costumes weighing up to 50 kilos.
When the person wearing the costume is standing up straight, the “bear” looks up. During the dance, the wearer must move forward and shake his or her body to the left and to the right while taking small steps either to the front or to the side.
The Bear Dance symbolizes the death and rebirth of time. Performed between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, this ancient celebration brings together the whole community, who gather to watch the performance. The Bear Dance sees men of all ages, and increasingly more women, who are dressed in real bear skins and dance to the rhythm of flutes and drums to drive off evil spirits and ring in the new year.
By tradition, the group of the Bear Dance, which includes 6 to 24 “bears” would visit every family of the village, accompanied by up to three singing bear tamers, several characters wearing women’s clothes and drummers. While this tradition is still observed in many villages, in cities and towns it usually takes the form of a parade that ends with a major performance.

A. It is specially performed by bears. B. It is better celebrated in cities.
C. It is a tradition with a long history. D. It is a daily sport in Romania.
9. How does the Bear Dance begin

C. Some performers played the flutes. D. A group of members blow whistles.
10. Why do the locals hold the Bear Dance every year
A. To welcome the arrival of the new year. B. To celebrate the positive part of life.
C. To call on people to protect wild animals. D. To provide themselves with a way to have fun.
11. Which part of a magazine is the text probably taken from
A. Nature. B. Culture. C. Business. D. Environment.
D
AI is already part of our daily lives. However, dependence on it can cause great harm to our ability to think critically. According to researchers from Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon University, too much reliance on these tools can cause great harm to critical thinking, as well as negatively affect the brain’s ability to combine different ideas, styles, or systems into a single idea or system. The study defined the structure of thought as a pyramid. In this way, knowledge is at the top, followed by understanding ideas, practice, comparing ideas and, finally, synthesizing (合成) them.
Based on surveys of 319 so-called “knowledge workers”, who can generally be categorized as “white-collar jobs”, the study found that while generative AI can improve efficiency, it can hold back critical engagement with work. In this way, it potentially ends up leading to increasing dependence on the tool in the long term, in addition to a decrease in the ability to independently solve problems.
The impact of this problem is being seen mainly in the business sector. According to a report published by the World Economic Forum, there was a decrease of around 41% in the workforce. Big tech CEOs have admitted that they are distributing much of their work to AI, according to CNET. This migration of functions to AI has led to a wave of layoffs and fewer job openings.
A series of executive (执行的) orders related to AI safety issued by former US President Joe Biden have been revoked by President Donald Trump, reducing limitations on big tech. In this regard, last week, Google lifted a ban on the use of AI in the development of weapons and surveillance (监视) tools.
Another very common use by workers is to use AI to correct and review their work already done. Although this action requires some critical thinking researchers warn that long-term use can destroy the ability to synthesize.
12. Which part of the thought pyramid is most affected by AI
A. Practising. B. Comparing. C. Understanding. D. Synthesizing.
13. Why is workforce decrease in business mentioned
A. To show AI damages economy. B. To indicate AI-related job loss.
C. To advise workers to raise efficiency. D. To prove AI has more critical thinking.
14. What does the underlined word “revoked” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Analyzed. B. Cancelled. C. Considered. D. Strengthened.
15. What can be inferred from Google lifting the AI use ban
A. AI safety is no longer a concern. B. Google leads in AI military fields.
C. People grow more inclusive of AI. D. The previous ban ignores the reality.

61. Dear Chris,
How are you I’m writing to share my meaningful experience volunteering at the local animal shelter last Saturday.
Our tasks included feeding the animals, playing with them, and cleaning their cages. I also assisted the staff with basic medical care, like bandaging small wounds for injured cats. The most memorable moment was comforting a shy puppy, who gradually warmed up to me. Though the work was tiring, seeing the animals happy made it all worthwhile.
This experience deepened my understanding of animal welfare. I realized how much effort is needed to protect these lovely creatures. It also made me appreciate the value of kindness and responsibility. I truly hope more people will join such efforts.
How about your weekend I’d love to hear your stories too!
Yours,
Li Hua
