In June 2019, I moved to London from New Zealand. New Zealand is a small country which has almost 5 million citizens (公民). I'd been living there for nearly 25years, so I wanted to find a new world. London was my dream city, so I finally got a two-year visa(签证) as a Commonwealth(英联邦) citizen.
I realized I was in trouble as soon as I arrived. The visa and the flight cost me a lot. I had to pay for 6 months' rent (房租) and other things. It was the first time since the age of 25 that I had had no job and no idea where my next pay would come from. I kept looking for jobs for about 3 months. Luckily, I was offered 2 jobs. After thinking twice, I decided to choose the one that seemed to be full of challenge to me.
▲ It was surely exciting to live in my dream city. However, I found it not so easy for me to fit in. I couldn't get used to the food and weather there. What's worse, I found that people couldn't understand well by my New Zealand accent (口音) although I spoke English as slowly as possible. Someone even laughed at me for it. 2 years went by quickly. Finally I returned to New Zealand, because I realized London didn't give me a sense of home.
Now I understand how important home is! Home is my parents' house with many books and my grandma's small house with beautiful flowers. Home is where I feel safer and more comfortable than any other place--whether it's around many people or just by myself.

Home alone Understand that you're not the only one. More than 8 million people live on their own in the UK. It doesn't mean that you're lonely. Instead, understand what's causing you to feel that way and think about how to reduce(减少)the sense of loneliness.

Pick up the phone regularly(有规律地)
Don't wait for family and friends to make the first move. Get in touch with them for a talk on the phone. You'd better make it a regular habit.
Find potential(潜在的) friends online
You can easily find some potential friends on Facebook or online websites for making friends. What activity are they fond of Find out more about it and discuss it with them online.
Do voluntary work
In my opinion, it is the most useful of the four ways. Volunteering is good for physical and mental health, reducing stress, and taking your mind off your problems. When I was a kid, I did something really terrible. My father bought me two goldfish and named them "Iasc" and" Iasc Elie". He told me that meant "Fish" and "Other Fish" in Irish. To an eight-year-old child, the names seemed really boring.

I tried many ways to make the goldfish more exciting. The most interesting thing was to see how long they could live out of the water. I took a fish out of the water with my hands and watched it gasping for air. Then I put it back in the bowl. And then I would take them out of the water again, for longer and longer each time.
Iasc and Iasc Elie started swimming towards the top of the water, not moving very much. Then they started floating on the top of the water. In other words, they were dead.
