Simon was our family’s first pet. Our girls 1 when he passed away. My husband and I tried not to let them see our tears(眼泪), 2 we couldn’t hold them back as we climbed into bed that night without Simon.
I’ve met a few dogs, but Simon was the 3 . He trained himself. He never ate any shoes or dug in the garden, so we didn’t have to clean up the 4 .
Ten months after Simon’s 5 , I still missed the days when he was with us. Since our girls wanted to keep another dog, I had to start 6 one. After searching every animal rescue center in the city, we found Scout, a black girl puppy. Our kids fell in love with 7 quickly. My husband was also 8 . Yet my heart didn’t open to her as I had expected.
Scout was 9 like Simon. She ruined(毁坏) two of her collars, a TV remote and a pair of shoes after she moved in. Last week, Scout jumped up on a man’s legs. Seeing that, I blurted out(脱口而出), “Off, Scout! Simon would 10 have done that.”
I couldn’t believe I had said that to a little puppy. 11 , she didn’t understand. But I still felt a deep sense of 12 . Perhaps my expectations of her were too 13 all the time. After all, Simon and I had been together for over 13 years. That was when I 14 to learn to love again.
Now, I always 15 Scout with “good girl” when I am training her. And I’ll try my best to love her as much as I loved Simon.
