Ryan had a lot of friends. After school they always played together. But Ryan had one big headache. It was his
sister, Allie. Somehow, Allie just didn’t understand that Ryan and his friends didn’t want her around.
Ryan asked his mom, “Why does Allie have to come along Troy’s sister doesn’t. Jimmy’s sister doesn’t,
either.” His mother said, “Troy’s sister is only six months old, and Jimmy doesn’t have a sister. Guess that makes
you the unlucky one.”
One day, Ryan wanted to play whiffle ball (空心棒球) with his friends. They used to play hardball, but one of
them broke a window of Mr. White’s house. Mr. White wouldn’t even give them their ball back. As usual, Allie
caught up with the boys.
Finally, the game started. It was Jimmy’s turn. He beat the ball hard, right into Mr. White’s yard. The boys ran
over to Mr. White’s fence (栅栏) and peered through the railings (围栏). The ball lay in the grass, just out of reach.
Nobody knew what to do.
Troy shouted, “Ryan, look how small Allie is!”
“Yeah,” said Jimmy. “She can fit through the fence!”
Then Allie slipped through the fence, picked up the ball, and came back. She handed the ball to Ryan.

Going to the doctor can seem boring as a child and even as a teen. But how long does it really take people to
actually start taking their health seriously According to a survey of 2, 000 adults in the UK, people don’t start
seriously to pay attention to their health until the age of 38 and often only after some health scare.
The study found starting to experience new pains and reaching a milestone (里程碑) birthday were also
among the reasons that encouraged them to take better care of themselves. Others were warned to take action after
a loved one passed away or experienced a health problem. Famous people also play a part in making people take
notice of their health. After King Charles was reported to be going through treatment for cancer, the UK National
Health Service’s webpage about the condition received 11 times more visits than before.
The study also found that 11 percent of adults said they still didn’t take their health very seriously. Nearly half
didn’t take much notice at a younger age as they felt fine most of the time. However, 36 percent simply felt they
were too young to need to worry about it. And 25 percent felt that nothing bad would happen to them.
第 8页/共 14页
It can be very easy to disregard your health-especially when you are young or you feel that everything is OK.
No one wants to think that there might be something wrong, but often the early signs of a health problem are not
clear. Sometimes it can take a bit of a wake-up call before you start taking your health more seriously, whether that
is falling ill yourself or seeing a loved one or even a well-known person experience a health problem.
There’s no one-size-fits-all way when it comes to health.
56. What can we learn from Paragraph 1
A. Going to the doctor is boring for everyone.
B. 2,000 children in the UK develop health problems.
C. Teenagers in the UK take their health very seriously.
D. People often start taking their health seriously after some health scare.
57. Which of the following can cause people to take their health seriously
①Reaching a certain age. ②Experiencing new pains.
③The death of a loved one. ④Visiting websites on health.
A ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①②④ D. ①③④
58. What does the underlined word “disregard” probably mean
A. 考虑 B. 破坏 C. 保持 D. 忽视

sides of the Central Axis.

been refined over the past seven centuries and continues to influence Beijing’s development today.
