Can laughing every day help keep the heart attack away Maybe so. Laughter, along with an active sense of humor, may help protect people against the heart attack, according to a recent study from the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
“The old saying that ‘Laughter is the best medicine’ seems to be true when it comes to protecting your heart,” said Michael Miller at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
In the study, researchers compared the humor responses(反应) of 300 people. Half of them had suffered from a heart attack. The other 150 did not have heart disease. Researchers provided people from the first group with a series of multiple-choice(多选的) questions to find out how much or how little they laughed in certain situations. And the second group were given true or false questions to help researchers know more about anger.
Miller said the most important study finding was that “people with heart disease responded less humorously to everyday life situations”. They generally laughed less, even in positive(乐观的) situations, and they showed more anger. “We know that exercising, no smoking and eating foods low in fat will help cut down on the risk of heart disease. ▲ ” Miller said.
It may be possible to put laughter into our daily activities, just as we do with other heart-healthy activities, such as walking up the stairs instead of taking the elevator. According to Miller, every one of us is supposed to read something humorous or watch a funny video, and try to find ways to take ourselves less seriously.

Children who have a difficult time learning basic writing skills often end up feeling a lot of anxiety or shame, especially if everyone else in their class is able to perform at a much higher level. Often teachers offer additional(额外的) support to those children who find handwriting very difficult. Recently, researchers have developed a learning system designed to help children have good handwriting. The system includes the use of a robot in the one-to-one learning process with a child.
Shruti Chandra, one of the researchers, said, “Our research aims at exploring how a robot can independently help a child with the learning of handwriting in this kind of situation where the child takes on the role of a teacher, assessing(评定) the robot’s handwriting skills.” The learning system is fully self-controlled, so it doesn’t require any additional work during the child-robot interaction(互动).
“The interaction begins when the robot asks for help from the child in correcting shapes of a few letters,” Chandra said. “First, the robot writes a deformed letter on the screen and asks the child to correct it. The child performs correction by changing the shape of the letter through a writing tool on the screen.”
During the child-robot tutoring sessions(辅导课), the robot makes some of the most common handwriting mistakes. This allows the child to think over some of his or her own mistakes. Instead of making children feel bad about themselves, the robot learning system puts them in charge of their own education.
The researchers found that the handwriting skills of children in the personalized learning conditions improved greatly after the tutoring sessions. On the other hand, the handwriting of children in the non-learning conditions did not improve much.

It is always a good idea to make new friends. Take some time off and you will make some friends. Being shy and being short of(缺乏) courage keep a lot of teenagers from making friends. Also, making friends might require a person to step outside of their comfort zone(舒适区) bravely, which is the hardest for a lot of teens, whether they are shy or not.
There are lots of ways to meet new friends. If you like to play sports, join a sports team or after-school sports club. If you like music or writing, join clubs or organizations that you are interested in. When you see someone in a place like that, it is always a good idea to simply go up to them and introduce yourself. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, and remember that friendships don’t always happen immediately. Simply be thoughtful with the words that you choose, and ask interesting questions so that you can start a conversation. You might find that you have much more in common than you would think.
Some friendships happen promptly, and you’ll be able to tell if someone is going to be a great friend right after you meet him or her. Some friendships take a long time to develop. Either way, the friends that you meet are going to be worth it. Just consider if you are comfortable with it.
It might be that you make friends when you are well outside of your comfort zone, and it might be that the friends you make don’t look anything like you. However, even though it might be scary to come close to people and start conversations, the friendships that will come out of these encounters(邂逅) are going to be worth it. All friendships start with a single hello.

Washing windows on a tall building is a dirty job. Hanging off the side of a building can also be dangerous, notes Oliver Nicholas, a young man from Sydney, Australia. As a result, he invented a robot to take the job.
Some recent accidents inspired his project. In one of them, a couple of high-rise window washers were standing on a platform(平台) when it fell down. No one died, but the pair was seriously hurt. Oliver also saw someone fall and break his leg while cleaning windows over the entrance to a building.
The new robot weighs 12 to 15 kilograms. It was designed to be hung off the side of the building with ropes, just as today’s window-washing platforms do. A pipe carries water to the robot and a cable provides it with electric power. The robot is controlled by a computer program. It moves up and down and across the window to clean any dirt away. When the robot needs to move from one window to another, a set of propellers(推进器) starts to work. They push the robot a short distance away from the building, while the ropes carry the robot over to the next window. Then, as a different set of propellers holds the robot tight against the window, the cleaning cycle repeats.
Oliver tested his robot by cleaning sample windows he’d built in his backyard. The robot’s propellers can hold the robot against a building even in winds as high as 45 kilometres per hour, Oliver reports. He performed those tests using his family’s leaf blower.
Besides protecting window washers from getting hurt, this window-washing robot could save building owners a bit of money. If commercialized(商品化), Oliver guesses it would cost about $11,000. That’s about the same cost as using cleaners to clean a 7-floor building, he notes.
( )1.What inspired Oliver to invent this robot
A.Accidents he himself experienced.
B.His interest in robot design.
C.High costs of washing windows.
D.Risks window washers are facing.
( )2.What can we learn about the robot
A.It is supported by a platform.
B.It can produce electricity itself.
C.It is hung by ropes while working.
D.It moves on the wall to get to another window.
D
C
( )3.Why did Oliver test the robot in his backyard
A.To check if it was safe enough.
B.To record how high it could go.
C.To see if it could clean the windows well.
D.To record its working speed.
( )4.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.The robot has many disadvantages.
B.The robot has a high business value.
C.The robot is as expensive as a 7-floor building.
D.The robot has been popular with building owners.

The researchers found that the handwriting skills of children in the personalized learning conditions improved greatly after the tutoring sessions. On the other hand, the handwriting of children in the non-learning conditions did not improve much.

A.To improve children’s handwriting.
B.To help teachers with their teaching.
C.To help children with their schoolwork.
D.To improve children’s ways of learning.
( )2.How does the robot work
A.By teaching children the right shapes of letters.
B.By ordering children to write letters again and again.
C.By asking children to correct handwriting mistakes.
D.By comparing the right shapes of letters with the wrong ones.
( )3.The underlined word “deformed” in the third paragraph can be replaced by _________.
A.basic B.tiny
C.perfect D.ugly

( )1.What may trouble people most when they make new friends
A.Being shy.
B.Having no courage.
C.Being busy.
D.Having no interest.
( )2.What should be avoided when you make new friends
A.Being the first to ask questions.
