The story of Liuchixiang During the Qing Dynasty, there was a famous family in Anhui Tongcheng: both father and son served as prime ministers. They were powerful. Their names are Zhang Ying and Zhang Tingyu. Here’s a story about Zhang Ying. In their hometown, the Zhang family’s house was next to the Wu family’s house. There was a space between the two houses for traffic purposes. The Wu family was going to take up the space to build a new house, but the Zhangs disagreed. So the two sides sued each other to the county yamen. The local officer found it difficult to handle the case since both families were powerful. During this period, the Zhang family wrote a letter to Zhang Ying when he was leading in Beijing. They asked Zhang Ying to intervene in the case. Zhang Ying received the letter and thought that they should show humility to their neighbours, so he wrote a poem to his family: “A wall of a few feet—why quarrel over it Let him have three feet; what harm could that do The Great Wall stretches for thousands of miles, yet we no longer see the First Emperor of Qin.” The Zhang family read the poem and understood its meaning. They offered to give up three feet of space. The Wu family was deeply moved and also gave up three feet of their land. As a result, a 6-foot lane appeared. Zhang Ying didn’t use his power to force others to give in. Finally the two families were courteous to each other and settled the case peacefully. This story spread quickly among people. It has been the symbol of humility.(共23张PPT)
