Are people less happy or more happy the older they get? If you answered more happy, then you were right, based on a study in 2008. It found that people usually become happier and experience less worry after age fifty. In fact, it found that by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were at eighteen.
The results came from a Gallup survey of more than three hundred forty thousand adults in the United States in 2008. At that time, the people were between the ages of eighteen and eighty-five.
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five. Stress levels dropped suddenly after people reached their fifties.
Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their seventies. But t he people least likely to report feeling negative emotions* were those in their seventies and eighties.
The survey also found that men and women have similar emotional changes as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more stress and worry than men did.
The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, losing jobs. But they found influences like these did not affect* the levels of happiness related to* age.

Forgiving (宽恕) someone who has hurt you or let you down is never an easy thing. Several new studies, however, say that it could have a lot of health benefits (好处). When you think of forgiveness, you probably don’t think of it as being a health or medical problem. Studies from Stanford University, on the other hand, show that something like anger can change your well-being.
When cartoon book characters like the Incredible Hulk get angry, they change colours and often gain special power. In the real world, anger is less clear and may be more dangerous. That’s why Professor Fred Luskin, founder of the Stanford Forgiveness Project and writer of Forgive for Good, says holding on to anger and hatred can harm your physical and mental health. Two new studies seem to show the same idea.
The studies find that people who are able to forgive feel less stress, less back pain, and less sadness or hopelessness. They also have fewer headaches, lower blood pressure, and fewer problems on sleeping.
So it doesn’t matter if your anger is caused by the traffic or other things. Learning to let it go is important. Techniques such as deep breath or thought can help. Or just ask yourself if it’s worth hurting yourself by staying angry with someone else.
Forgiveness does not mean that you simply accept what happened and say it’s OK. Instead, it’s a way of making peace with yourself about what happened in the past.
29. The writer of the passage tries to make his point clear by ______.
A. mentioning some studies B. sharing his own experience
C. raising some questions D. mentioning some health problems

A. show how to control oneself
B. introduce a famous professor
C. support his point on anger and hatred

A. It’s not easy to know if you are angry.
B. People who are able to forgive feel less tired.
C. It’s hard to forgive someone who hurts you.
D. You can let your anger go by breathing deeply.
32. The best title for this passage is probably ______.
A. Forgiving Others Is Hard B. Anger Is Bad for Health
C. Learning to Forgive Is Important D. Forgiveness Is Good for Health

“Face it, Andy. You sold your soul the day you put on that first pair of Jimmy Choo’s.” That line from the movie The Devil Wears Prada is an example showing how a shoemaker has become famous in the fashion world.
Jimmy Choos (Zhou Yangjie) is a native Malaysian of Chinese origin (出身), born in 1961 into a family of shoemakers. He created his first pair of shoes at age 11. His family couldn’t pay for his schooling, so he dropped out at a young age. He had to work with his father to support the family. But his dream to be a fashion designer never disappeared, so he did all he could to enter an art college and finally took up a position in the fashion world through his talent and willpower.
Choo graduated from a college in London and had a small workshop there. He hit the international fashion scene when Vogue magazine described his designs in eight pages in 1988. His work was immediately popular and got love and support from Diana, Princess of Wales.

Jimmy Choo shops have opened around the world, so his designs are more accessible to those who want a designer shoe, and can afford his prices. Choo also has a website where shoppers can view his ready-to-wear designs. The brand (牌子) of Jimmy Choo has been comparable to top brands, like Channel, LV, etc. But it’s still young and has a bright future.

Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable (一次性的) toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers. Many guests like the idea because they don't have to bring their own. But, if you travel to Beijing, remember to bring your own things. Starting from June, some hotels in Beijing will no longer provide guests with these disposables. They want to ask people to use less disposable things.
Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It is a waste of natural resources and is very bad for the environment. Do you know, one Chinese person makes as much as 400kg of waste a year! Most of that waste comes from disposable things. In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1,320 tons of plastic lunch bowls every year! Plastic can take between 100 and 400 years to break down. So the less plastic we throw out, the better. So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again.
Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life: Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones. After using a plastic bag, wash it out and let it dry. Then you can use it over and over again. Do not use paper cups. At your school canteen(食堂), use your own bowl and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.
31. Why do many hotels provide guests with some disposable things?
A. Let their guests be convenient during their traveling.

Linda Evans was my best friend—like the sister I never had. We did everything together: piano lessons, movies, swimming, horseback riding.
When I was 13, my family moved away. Linda and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special time—like my wedding (婚礼) and Linda’s. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new homes, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent came back, stamped “Address Unknown. ” I had no idea how to find Linda.
Over the years, I missed Linda very much. I wanted to share happiness of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sadness when my brother and then mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Linda could fill.
One day I was reading a newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked very much like Linda and whose last name was Wagman — Linda’s married name. “There must be thousands of Wagmans,” I thought, but I still wrote to her.
She called as soon as she got my letter. “Mrs Tobin!” she said excitedly, “Linda Evans Wagman is my mother. ”
Minutes later I heard a voice that I knew very much, even after 40 years, laughed and cried and caught up on each other’s lives. Now the empty place in my heart is filled. And there’s one thing that Linda and I know for sure: We won’t lose each other again!

The right name is important in the business world. All you have to do is think of the names for some of the product are connected in everyone’s mind.
In many countries, successful trade or brand names are protected by law. This is so that other companies cannot make a product that looks like another. People might think that they were buying one product and, in fact , be buying something different. Businesses register a company or a product name with the government. In fact, more than 1,000 product and company names are registered every hour. Many companies spend a lot of money to find the right name for their products. A good example of this is in the car industry. Some successful names for cars have powerful associations(联系). The Ford Mustang and the Jaguar are only two examples of choosing the names of animals that are fast and strong.
When a U.S. company decides to sell its product in another country, it has to make sure that the product name translates properly. When Coca-Cola introduced its soft drink to China, it looked for the right name. It wanted a name that would do two things. One was to present its image in Chinese and the second was to be close to its first brand name——Coke. It took some efforts before finding the right word—which sounds similar and translates as “happiness in the mouth”. Asian company names are not new to the United States. The brand names of Samsung and Sony have been successful. Finding the right brand name is a big business. Asian companies that sell to foreign markets pay to find a name that will connect with its customers. There are even naming companies that specialize in inventing product names. These companies can charge(要价)up to $ 100,000 a word for their creations. But it’s worth it. Successful companies know how important the right brand names are for their development.
29. Trade names are protected by law in many countries ___________.
A. to make companies pay for naming service.
B. to help people choose the best products.
C. to present good images of the products.
D. to prevent products from being copied.
30.What can we learn from the passage?
A. Many companies care about the cost of finding the right names.
B. Creative trade names can help companies to have a larger sale.
C. The government often does business with naming companies.
D. It is considered necessary for cars to be named after animals.
31.What’t the best title for the passage?
A. The Business of Names
B. The Development of Names
C. The Rules of Naming Business
D. The Methods of Choosing Names

Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. By the middle 1950s, he had become one of the best-loved and most successful children's book writers in the world. His books are very popular with young readers. They enjoy the invented words and the pictures of unusual funny animals and plants.
In 1954, life magazine published(刊登) a report about school children who could not read. The report said many children's books were not interesting. Doctor Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. He used words with the same ending sound, like fish and wish. 【2016中考模拟】阅读下列材料,从A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳的答案。
How long are you willing to wait for a webpage to open before you start to lose your patience? Half a minute? A few seconds? Google engineers have discovered that even 400 milliseconds―as short as the blink of an eye―is too long for most Internet users.
A millisecond is one thousandth of a second. People hardly notice such a small time difference, but it does cause them to stop searching, reported The New York Times. “Without question, nobody likes to wait,” said Arvind Jain, a Google engineer. “Every millisecond matters.”
Nowadays, millions of smart-phones and computers are continually gathering and sending out information. With so many people downloading maps, sports videos, news and restaurant recommendations, you can get digital “traffic jams”. Meanwhile, users are expecting faster and faster service.
Google found that if one website is 250 milliseconds slower than another website, then people will visit it less often. This is why technology companies are now competing to be the fastest. Google said people do expect different things from different websites because they realize not all loading times are the same. For example, a person will be more patient waiting for a video to load than for a search result.
Even so, four out of five online users will click away if a video takes too long to load. This makes it difficult for video websites to choose between the quality of pictures and fast loading times.
Trying to get a higher speed has always been part of the history of the Internet. In the 1990s, when the World Wide Web first started to become popular, it was very crowded and slow; people called it the “World Wide Wait”. But engineers managed to fight the problem with new inventions. They laid a lot of fiber optic cables (光缆)for sending in high speed; they improved software so it would work more smoothly; they placed computer servers all around the world to be nearer to users; all this increased speed.
Nowadays we can enjoy much faster Internet. Famous search engines such as Google and Microsoft’s Bing usually find search results in less than a second. However, in order to meet the requirement of Internet users, these tycoons should never stop their steps.
1. The report from The New York Times suggests that
A. A millisecond is one thousandth of a second.
B. 400 milliseconds is not so long for most Internet users.
C. A millisecond has nothing to do with the Internet speed.
D. A millisecond really makes a difference to the Internet users.

What will man be like in the future——in 5000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, men are usually about three inches* taller. Five hundred years is quite a short period of time in the river of the long history, so we may guess that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a lot. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity*. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and finally we shall need larger ones! This may bring about a physical change to the head, in particular the forehead*, will grow larger.
Nowadays our eyes are always in use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is probably that man’s eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand, we will make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are possibly to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive* because they are used a lot in modern life.
But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body as time passes by because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both men and women will probably have no hair.
Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may be true. All the same, no matter what these changes are, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and feelings similar to our own.
33. We can probably read the passage above in a ____.
A. movie poster
B. science magazine
C. storybook
D. guidebook
34. The change in man’s size of forehead will probably be because _______.
A. he makes use onIy 20% of the brain’s capacity
B. his brain has grown larger over the past centuries
C. the other 80% of his brain will grow finally
D. he will use his brain more and more as time goes on
35. Which of the following is TRUE about a human being in the future?
A. He thinks and feels in different way.
B. He has smaller eyes and wears better glasses.
C. He is hairless because hair is no longer useful.
D. His fingers grow weaker because he doesn’t use them.
36. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. How man’s life will be in the future
B. Future man is growing taller and uglier
C. Future man will still have a lot in common with us
D. What future man will look like

A few elderly people got in touch with him asking for help for things they needed. One of them was especially thankful because his caregiver couldn’t make it. To our surprise, he got more calls from people offering to help. Everyone was really touched and wrote to my brother wonderful email.
