Story A
A famous art collector was walking through the city when he noticed a dirty cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a store. He did a double take.
He noticed that the saucer was an antique and very valuable, so he walked casually into the store and innocently offered to buy the cat for 20 dollars.
The store owner replied,“I'm sorry, but the cat isn't for sale.”
The collector said,“Please, I need a hungry cat with a good appetite around the house to catch mice. I'll pay you 200 dollars for that cat.”
The owner said “sold” and handed over the cat.
The collector continued,“Hey, for the 200 dollars I wonder if you could throw in that old saucer. The cat's used to it and it'll save me from having to get a dish.”

(2025·广东莞中、深大附中联考)Kurth Reis of San Francisco, California, has been through
many hard times in his life. In 2018, Reis had a serious motorcycle accident and spent time in a hospital. The accident affected him deeply, his body and spirits. He had several medical operations. Reis said he felt like he was “reborn” each time he woke after an
operation. Following 88 days in the hospital, Reis was released and felt ready to change his ways.
Lately, he says he just wants to cheer people up by making bubbles (泡泡).You can watch him perform his bubble art for hours at a time around the city's streets and in amusement parks. Sometimes he puts out a glass container called a tip jar. People who watch his show can drop money into it if they want to.
If the weather is good for bubbles, Reis will make a special mixture that can make bubbles the size of a small car. To make his large bubble, he puts a small rope hanging from two long sticks into the bubble mixture. As he removes it, he opens his arms wide and the bubbles begin to form. Once enough air is inside the bubble, he moves his arms back together to set the bubble free. Some people feel it looks like a bubble “ballet”.
While Reis may seem like a bubble-making expert, he only got started in April 2020.Reis can support himself with donations from the audiences. But money is not what stirs him to make bubbles. He feels his art is useful in more important ways. Not long ago, a woman told Reis after a performance that his bubbles had lifted her spirits when her dad died.
Reis can see smiles rise from under the face covers worn by those watching him perform. Children crack a smile and clap their
hands. Reis said such reactions make him feel like an essential worker whose job is to spread joy.
“I'm just trying to put a smile on somebody's face by doing some bubbles,” said Reis. Such a small act will be remembered by others and warm others.

(2025·四川绵阳南山中学月考)“Funny or die” has a whole new meaning, thanks to a study published in April in a medical journal. Women with a strong sense of humour were found to live
longer though they were ill, especially for those with heart problems and infections. Happy men seemed to be protected against infection.
The researchers reported the findings from a 15-year study on the connection between the sense of humour and death among 53,556 women and men in their country. The team studied the influence of humour on people's way of thinking, social skills and emotion development, and examined death from different conditions: heart problems, infections and other health problems.
The findings showed that for women, those who had high scores on a humorous way of thinking had a 48 percent less risk of death from all causes, a 73 percent lower risk of death from heart problems and an 83 percent lower risk of death from infection. For men, a connection was found only for the risk of death from infection—those with high humour scores had a 74 percent reduced risk. The researchers suggested the sex differences could be due to a
small decrease in humour scores as the men aged. No connection
was found for the influence of humour on social skills and emotion development.
“The humorous way of thinking plays an essential part in people's personality (性格)and may influence the way people cope with everyday life,” said co-researcher Sven Svebak.“In this way, it may help reduce fighting in daily life, preventing the build-up of stress.” Although the sense of humour is a natural characteristic (特征), it can also be developed through social activities.
“I expect that children whose parents have no sense of humour when feeling challenges are less likely to develop their sense of humour to cope with everyday life when they grow up,” Sven Svebak said.“But if you had a humourless childhood, never fear—studies show people can learn to be humorous at any age.”

Rowan Atkinson is an English actor, comedian and screenwriter. In Britain, Mr Atkinson is mostly famous for many successful TV shows but internationally we know him best as the awkward, clumsy, but always amusing Mr Bean. If you think that Rowan Atkinson is anything like his famous creation, then you are in for a surprise. On the contrary, he is nothing like Mr Bean.
Rowan was born on 6 January, 1955.He grew up on a farm with his parents and three older brothers. His father was very strict and did not believe in the value of television.
Rowan had a very successful academic career. At the age of 13, he was awarded a scholarship to a boarding school. Later, he studied at Newcastle University, where he attained the highest marks in his year. At Oxford, he obtained his master's degree in electrical engineering. This may explain why he loves fast cars, of which he has many.
When Rowan was young, he had a stutter and to make his speech clearer, he began to speak very carefully. This may be why some of his characters have unusual ways of speaking.
As early as primary school, Rowan had already shown a talent for acting, but it was only later at university that he decided to become an actor. A key event occurred one day in 1976 when he was playing around and pulling a face in the mirror. “I discovered my face,” he said later.
John Lloyd, who worked as a producer for BBC Television, says that one rarely meets someone with such genius, and that when he worked with Atkinson he became convinced that Rowan would be more famous than Charlie Chaplin.

What makes a sense of humour is a difficult
thing to tell. Different people find different things
funny, and what may seem hilarious to some will be highly rude to others. However, having some kind of sense of humour is important for reducing stress and getting along with others. Therefore, it's important to think about ways to improve your sense of humour.
Look for the funny side of situations. While it can be difficult at times to find the funny side in unfortunate events when you're having a bad day, try to think about how the situation might look like to other people, and attempt not to get too angry. Laughing over minor accidents, trips and falls will help you in preventing the loss of temper that you will regret later.
Learn some basic jokes. Some people find it hard to remember jokes, and feel left out when others are telling them. It's worth trying to learn a few jokes that you can pull out the bag when you need to, or regularly think about how you can turn a funny situation that occurs in daily life into an entertaining anecdote for later.
Look at joke or humour cards. There are many different kinds of funny cards available, which can be a great inspiration for finding ways to improve your sense of humour. Giving an appropriate funny card to friends and family on the right occasion will show that you have a good sense of humour and are thinking about them.
Learn from friends. Look at friends that you think have a great sense of humour. How do they deal with situations, and what kind of jokes do they make Is there anything you can take away from their actions

According to a recent study, laughter and joy may not be unique to humans. Ancestral forms of play and laughter existed in other animals long before they did in humans. Jaak Panksepp, a
professor of psychobiology at Washington State University and the author of the study, says, “Human laughter has deep roots in our animal past.”
While humans are the only creatures that tell jokes, it has long been suspected that some animals like to laugh. In 1872, Charles Darwin pointed out that “very many kinds of monkeys, when pleased, make a sound, clearly analogous to our laughter”.In an experiment Panksepp had performed earlier, he found that when chimpanzees (黑猩猩) play, they make noises strikingly like human laughter, and that dogs have a similar response.
Panksepp notes that children who are too young to laugh at jokes are likely to laugh during noisy plays. Panksepp found that when young rats are playing, they also make sounds—they chirp (发唧唧声), although people can't hear them. These chirps are far too high for humans to hear. Researchers must use special electronic receivers that change the chirps to sounds that humans can hear.
In studying laughter, scientists have focused mostly on related issues—humour, personality, health benefits, social theory—rather than laughter itself. New research, however, shows that circuits (电路) for laughter exist in very ancient parts of the human brain. The ability to laugh appears early in childhood, as anyone who has seen a baby laugh knows.

(2025·湖南多校期中联考)The Ig Nobel Prizes, established in 1991, are an amusing alternative to the distinguished Nobel Prizes, honoring research that
“makes people laugh, then think”. The name is a clever wordplay on “ignoble”, meaning something lacking honor, reflecting the humorous and unconventional nature of the discoveries.
However, beneath the foolishness often lies great scientific value, showing that curiosity can lead to significant understanding, even from seemingly insignificant questions.
The prizes draw attention to a range of odd but fascinating studies. Last year, some researchers were awarded for demonstrating that real plants can copy the appearance of artificial ones they are planted alongside, revealing the remarkable adaptability of nature. Another study demonstrated that dead fish can swim upstream by using energy from fast-moving water currents, which could inspire energy-efficient designs in engineering. Additionally, a probability experiment involving more than 350,000 coin throws revealed that a
thrown coin is more likely to land on the side it started from, offering unexpected understanding into chance and probability.
In previous years, similarly quirky studies have been honored. In 2004, one of the Ig Nobel Prizes was awarded to Jillian Clarke. She investigated the scientific soundness of the “five-second rule”, a popular belief that food dropped on the floor is still safe to eat if picked up within five seconds. Some 2006 Ig Nobel Prize winners found that female malaria mosquitoes (蚊子) are equally attracted
to the smell of human feet and Limburger cheese. This research, which won the Biology Prize, suggests that these odors could be used to develop innovative mosquito control methods.
Held annually in mid-September, around the time the real Nobel Prizes are announced, the Ig Nobel Prize ceremony is a unique mixture of humor and science, where real Nobel Prize winners present the awards. The event contains a number of running jokes, including Miss Sweetie Poo, a little girl who repeatedly cries out
“Please stop, I'm bored”, if speakers go on too long. Paper airplanes are traditionally thrown by the audience, adding to the funny nature of the event.

(2025·牡丹江市一中月考)The concept that you can use humour, laughter, and play to make you healthier probably seems too simple to be true. However, it is really true and simple. The sense of humour, laughter and play plays an important part in keeping you healthy.
Treat the blues with a sense of humour, which is closely tied to laughter. Laughter is contagious.Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and a smile is also just as infectious (传染性的) as laughter is. You can experience something by smiling at everyone around you, and you will feel happier just by sharing a smile, even with a stranger.
Play is an important part of making sure that we stay healthy. We are often encouraged to make sure our children play, and are told of the benefits of being out playing. However, what we often forget is that it is just as important for old people to make play be part of their life as it's for children. Physical play is essential for the old and it certainly helps prevent illness. While they are still in the early stages, the studies that have been done have shown that physical play certainly plays a part in preventing cognitive (认知的) ability falling.
Anyway, adding a brand of humour, laughter and play to our life will influence us mentally, physically and socially and bring us many advantages. So we should make full use of humour, laughter and play to make our life more active, more interesting and happier.

(2025·福州六校期中联考)I received my architectural training in Italy, earning a traditional degree that didn't involve working with Computer-Aided Design (CAD). However, my journey with computers began through my passion for music, using sound
sampling systems, which catch the “sound reality” of an instrument, and also computer-assisted music composition systems. Little did I know that this exploration would greatly influence my approach to computer science and AI in the years to come.
Self-taught in computer science during my architectural studies, I sought opportunities to specialize further. Ultimately, my journey led me to a pioneering laboratory in Marseille, France, known for its groundbreaking work in computer science applied to architecture.
Surrounded by a community of innovators, I improved my skills to explore the transformative power of technology in preserving cultural heritage.
In 2019, the world watched in horror as Notre Dame de Paris (巴黎圣母院) was consumed in flames. Determined to contribute to the restoration efforts, I took the lead in developing a digital ecosystem for the restoration operation. We developed groundbreaking AI tools generating 3D representations from photographs.
By tracking the position and shape of voussoirs (拱石), and digitizing them from photographs, we were able to use the fine geometric information of the voussoirs to reconstruct the arch, thus giving valuable information to the architects about the structure, the exact geometry, and especially about constructive details of the oldest areas of the church from the 13th century. Notably, AI played a pivotal role in the process.
As the restoration project progresses, the AI-driven preservation continues to advance. This knowledge will definitely serve as raw material to be used for AI systems, for example, for studies that can be extended to other buildings.
