20 May 1961
We have been struggling for days, but things on Elephant Island are going from bad to worse. We are now crowded together under one of our boats on the rocky shore of this miserable place. Soon after we arrived, Shackleton left us to find help on South Georgia Island, 1,320 kilometres away—the voyage was too dangerous and
difficult for all of us to make it in our small boats. If Shackleton fails, will we have any hope of rescue No. No navy in the world ever stops at Elephant Island, and no one else knows that we are here.
I feel low. It's cold and windy. The island has no plants. Sometimes we are able to catch a seal or a penguin to eat. Otherwise, there is no food. I try to think of happier things: decent food, warm and dry clothes, a cosy bedroom, sunny days, and my
mother's face...However, these happy memories are soon interrupted by a sudden cold rush of air.
I shouted, “Shut the door!”
“Hold on now, Perce. Don't you go turning into another Tom,” came the reply. “We've caught another penguin, so it's penguin soup tonight!”
Bless Frank Wild, the kindest man there is after our leader, Ernest Shackleton. How could I become as selfish and bad-tempered as Thomas Orde-Lees!
Without Frank and Ernest, we'd all be dead by now. Their genuine concern for others, their perseverance, and their resolve fill me with hope.
Perhaps there is a chance we will return home, after all.
1.Who was a selfish person according to the diary ( )
A.Thomas Orde-Lees. B.Ernest Shackleton.
C.Tom. D.Frank Wild.
2.Why did Shackleton go to South Georgia Island ( )
A.To meet others. B.To buy some food.
C.To find help. D.To buy some boats.

3.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage ( )
A.Shackleton left Elephant Island for help by himself.
B.Thomas Orde-Lees was selfish and bad-tempered.
C.Frank was the kindest man of all the crew.
D.While they were at Elephant Island, they fed on a seal or a penguin.

4.Which of the following is NOT what the crew members did to make sure they could survive ( )
A.Cheering each other up. B.Trying to comfort each other.
C.Talking with each other. D.Complaining each other.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2025·河北师大附中月考)A mother of nine who started medical school when her youngest
child was 4 years old graduated with her degree and plans to be a neurosurgeon (神经外科医生).
Sarah Merrill, now 41, said her journey to medical school began at age 17.She then met her husband and got married. Merrill first thought about going to school part-time to get a degree, but later she decided to follow her dream of attending medical school. Certainly, it was a challenge. Speaking of her successfully returning to university, Merrill was appreciative of her family.“When I was accepted into Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, we moved from Pennsylvania to Arizona,” said Merrill.“In fact, they volunteered these movements. I know it was tough for all of us.”
Merrill and her children often have “homework parties” where they study for their own courses. Merrill's choice has given a stimulus to her children. Merrill felt touched knowing her 11-year-old daughter wanted to become a surgeon and overhearing her son tell his friends his mom was going to be a cool brain surgeon, though he didn't understand that really.
Merrill's next step into a neurosurgery residency (实习期) will take her into a male-dominated field where only 5% of neurosurgeons are women. Dr. Michele Halyard at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine said Merrill was known as a focused student. Halyard said, “If you can deal with nine children and keep your reason, the residency should be a piece of cake because no amount of stress will make you fail.”
Merrill had considered choosing a more family-friendly specialty; nevertheless, again she chose to follow her original pursuit. It's the same advice she would give to all, “Set the goal that is what you're really enthusiastic about. If you know what your interest is, focus on the next step. Then you'll get where you want to go.”

Victor E.Frankl, the author of Man's Search for Meaning, once wrote,“Everything can be taken from a person but one thing: the last of human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances.” Frankl was right. Attitude is a choice. You could be faced with a thousand problems, many or most over which you have absolutely no control. However, there is always one thing you are in complete and absolute control of and that is your own attitude.
To be honest,it wasn't until I was in my late 20s that I finally understood its full impact. All through my teens and into my early adult life,I can't tell you the number of times that I heard,“Bob,if you'd just change your attitude, you would do a lot better.” At that time,I didn't know what attitude was,let alone know how to change it!
Attitude and results are inseparable. They follow one another as night follows day. One is the cause, while the other, the result. There is a term we use to distinguish this “cause and effect” relationship, which is called “The Law of Cause and Effect”. Simply stated,if you think in negative terms, you will get negative results; if you think in positive terms, you will achieve positive results. Some people always blame others or circumstances for their problems, while others take responsibility and make things happen.
The latter are in control of their life and achieve success through their choices.
You can experience that kind of life as well;you only need to decide. Dorothea Brande once said,“Act as if it were impossible to fail,” and I challenge you to do so. By simply becoming aware that you can choose your thoughts each and every day,you will change your entire outlook. You have the power to choose an abundant life, no matter what your circumstances are.
Don't wait to experience all the wonderful things the universe has in store for you. Start today by working on your attitude and welcome the abundant life that you are meant to lead.
【解题导语】 本文是一篇议论文。文章主要就态度和结果展开讨论,说明成功始于积极的态度。
5.What's the main idea of paragraph 1 ( )
A.Freedom is the last thing we can control.
B.Most problems in life are in our control.
C.A man can lose anything but freedom.
D.We can choose our attitude at any time.
解析:段落大意题。根据第一段中的“Attitude is a choice.”和“one thing you are...that is your own attitude”可知,第一段主要是关于我们可以随时选择我们的态度。

6.Why does the author use the example of himself in paragraph 2 ( )
A.To show attitude is important to the old.
B.To prove attitude changes on its own.
C.To show understanding attitude takes time.
D.To prove the author was very stubborn.
解析:推理判断题。根据第二段中的“To be honest...its full impact.”和“At that time...how to change it!”可推知,作者在第二段通过自己的例子表明理解态度需要时间。

7.What does “The Law of Cause and Effect” help readers to do ( )
A.Understand what causes a good attitude.
B.Know the benefit of choosing active attitude.
C.Analyze the effect of a negative attitude.
D.Understand “cause and effect” relationship better.
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段中的“There is a term...you will achieve positive results.”可知,了解因果定律有助于读者了解选择积极态度的好处。

8.What might be the best title for the passage ( )
A.Attitude Is Human Freedom
B.Winning Is a Matter of Control
C.Attitude and Results Are Separable
D.Success Begins with Positive Attitude
解析:标题归纳题。通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段中的“By simply becoming aware that...you are meant to lead.”可知,本文主要说明成功始于积极的态度。因此,D项最适合作文章标题。

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2025·龙岩市一级校联盟期中)Over the years, when a book has spoken to me with particular power, I have put pen to paper and sent word off to the author, communicating what his work meant to me.
It all started in my 18th year, when I was entertaining my own imaginations of success as a writer. I was full of high expectations, believing that becoming an author was merely a matter of putting my thoughts onto paper, sending the works to a publisher, and waiting for fame to come. Nevertheless, what came was total disappointment. I wrote to the famous children's author Lloyd Alexander, describing my fruitless year-long effort at publication and asking him for direction. To my delight, he answered:“Advice is
always very easy to give, but it's very hard to make it specific and meaningful since we all have to work in our own ways. When you mention that you've been writing for a year without being published, I hasten to tell you that I wrote seven times that long without being published! So, perhaps one piece of advice is: patience.”
I was encouraged by the idea that a well-regarded writer would take the time to offer a bit of advice to an overconfident teen. But Mr. Alexander was not a singular case (个别现象).I continued to
reach out to writers and, truth to tell, I didn't always receive a reply. But when I did get one, the content was often filled with consideration and even, at times, affection.
I think of the American poet William Stafford, who replied to me from Lake Oswego, Oregon. We actually had an ongoing correspondence (通信) for a while. I wrote to him asking if he would be so kind as to autograph (签名) one of his books for me. His reply brought an immediate smile to my face: “I am eagerly ready to autograph and return a book—it makes me feel like an author.”

When John was growing up,other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood,he was better off than his childhood playmates.
He had more job satisfaction,a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all,he was happier. Far happier.
These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not.“Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,”
said George Vaillant, the psychologist who made the discovery.“And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”
Vaillant's study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47.Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men's mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.
Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence—the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said,“One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love,to work for the person one loves and to love one's work.”

(2025·江苏靖江高级中学期中)Kelli Boehle says her son Nik was an amazing and caring person. Nik was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 when he was 17. He passed away in 2012. But Nik's kindness and generosity have lived on long after his death.
After he was diagnosed and started treatment, Nik was granted (给予) a wish experience from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “For just this period of time, we didn't think about cancer,” Kelli Boehle said. “All we thought about was enjoying our time together.”
In 2009, Nik met another young man Nate, who was also going through cancer treatment. He'd been diagnosed a month after turning 18, and Nik learned he was too old to qualify for a wish. The night before Nik passed away, he asked his mother to help ensure that young adults fighting cancer could have their wishes come true too.
“It was like a seed he planted that just wouldn't stop coming into my mind,” she said. In 2012, Kelli Boehle started Nik's Wish. The nonprofit grants wishes to young adults between the ages of 18
and 24 who are battling cancer. Nate was the organization's first wish recipient. “It's meant to bring them joy and know that they're loved and that we're fighting for them, too,” Kelli Boehle said.
Recently, 19-year-old Jordan Morrow received her wish to attend a concert as part of a trip to Los Angeles. For Morrow, who has spent the last year battling brain cancer, going to the concert has done more than lift her spirits. “I think it's something to get me through whatever comes my way,” she said. “And I'm thankful for Nik's Wish for that.”
In these years since Nik passed away, the organization has granted more than 300 wishes across more than 30 states. In the beginning, Kelli Boehle says she wasn't sure she could be a wish maker and work closely with the young adults. But now, it's her favorite thing to do.

Perce Blackborow joined an expedition with Sir Ernest Shackleton to Antarctica on the ship Endurance in 1914. Shackleton was one of the most famous explorers of his day and it was considered a great honour to be part of his expeditions. Below are some of Blackborow's diary entries.
31 Oct, 1914
...Well, it so happened that one morning I bought a newspaper and read the advertisement about the Antarctic expedition.
An expedition to the South Pole with the great Sir Ernest Shackleton—this is the adventure that I have been dreaming of. And I was ready for it. At the age of 19, I am fit and full of vigour. However, when I applied to join the expedition, Shackleton turned me down because he thought I was too young and wasn't qualified. But I was so enthusiastic about the idea of going along with them
that I secretly went aboard his ship, the Endurance, and hid in a small cupboard. Unfortunately, three days after we set off I was discovered. Shackleton did not want to turn back so he offered me a job, but only after he promised me, “If anyone has to be eaten, then you will be the first!” He assigned me to be a steward, and I now serve meals for twenty-eight men, three times a day.
How everyone will envy me when I come back and tell them about the amazing places I have been to!
21 Nov, 1915
The journey has not been easy.Endurance became stuck in the ice as we approached Antarctica. The ice froze around us and we were well and truly stuck! We saw the ship get crushed by the ice. And when the ship sank, our hearts sank with it.
Before we abandoned the ship, Shackleton calmly called us together and told us to rescue our most essential supplies—the small boats, our food, the cook stove, candles, clothes, and blankets. This was no time to panic. We were not allowed to take most of our
personal belongings, and Shackleton himself threw away all his gold. But to our surprise, he allowed Hussey to keep his banjo. Hussey often plays it to keep our spirits up.
We are now camped on the ice and we have been managing to survive, but spring is coming, and the ice will soon begin to melt.
1.Why did Shackleton refuse Blackborow's application ( )
A.Because he was too young.
B.Because he wasn't ready for it.
C.Because he was not enthusiastic about it.
D.Because he was not full of vigour.
2.How did Blackborow feel when Shackleton approved of his staying on the ship ( )
A.Disappointed. B.Amazed. C.Proud. D.Energetic.

3.What happened to the ship ( )
A.It was frozen. B.It was crushed by ice.
C.It was out of oil. D.It was useless.
4.Why did Shackleton agree Hussey to keep his banjo ( )
A.Because he wanted to rescue them.
B.Because it was essential to survive.

D.Because it was valuable.

A PhD student in Michigan defended her paper while wearing a skirt made of rejection letters she received while studying.29-year-old Caitlin Kirby printed out 17 of her rejection letters—from scholarships, academic journals, and conferences—then folded each one into a fan. She connected them in rows, and in the end she made a skirt out of these “fans” and wore it.
She said that the idea behind her unique clothing item came out of a desire to normalize (使正常化) rejection and take pride in overcoming it. “The whole process of rereading those old letters and making that skirt sort of reminded me that you have to apply for a lot of things to succeed,” she said.“A natural part of the process is to get rejected along the way.”
Caitlin's adviser, Julie Libarkin, a professor of earth and environmental science at Michigan State University, also encourages the acceptance of failure in her students. Libarkin believes it's important for students to get into a habit of applying for things, and to get used to the feeling of rejection, so she encourages them to chase after any opportunity that comes their way. If a student doesn't get a grant or a spot in an academic journal, that's okay. They'll still have learned something in the process.
As for Caitlin, the rejections she received over the years have led to great things: Since her doctorate, she's won a scholarship to do further research on urban agriculture in Germany.
Currently, she's a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As for what the future holds “I'm prepared to receive a few more rejection letters along the way,” she joked heartily.“Maybe I'll make a longer skirt.”

(2025·天津市第四十七中学期中)In today's motivational literature, failure is often viewed as something to be celebrated. Inspirational speakers are fond of quoting the words of the novelist Samuel Beckett—“Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”
It seems that disappointments are an essential stepping stone to success, a turning point in our life story that will ultimately end in victory.
Nevertheless, psychological researches find most of us struggle to handle failure constructively. In other words, we fail to “fail forward”.We find ways to devalue (贬低) the task at which we failed, and become less motivated to persevere and reach our goals. This phenomenon is known as the “sour-grape effect”, which was discovered by Professor Hallgeir Sjastad.
Sjastad explains that the “sour-grape effect” is a self-protective mechanism (机制).“Most of us picture ourselves as competent people, so when external feedback suggests otherwise, it poses a serious threat to that self-image,” he says.“The easiest way out is to deny or explain away the external signal, so we can reduce the inconsistency and preserve a positive sense of self. We do this even without noticing.”
If you have one bad interview for your dream job, you might convince yourself that you don't really want it at all, and stop applying for similar positions. The same goes if you fail to impress at a sports trial, or if a publisher rejects the first submission of your manuscript.“We tend to explain away our shortcomings and convince ourselves our ‘Plan C’ is actually our ‘Plan A’,” Sjastad says.
It doesn't mean we should persevere in goals all the time. It can be healthy to change ambitions if the process is no longer
making us happy. But the “sour-grape effect” may lead us to come to this decision prematurely, rather than hanging on a little and seeing whether we might learn and improve.
Failures are unavoidable. By learning to face the disappointment instead of devaluing its importance and pretending nothing has happened, you may find it easier to achieve your goals.
【解题导语】 本文是一篇议论文。文章讨论了失败观。
5.What can we learn from paragraph 3 about the “sour-grape effect” ( )

A.Unhappily. B.Mistakenly. C.Hurriedly. D.Carelessly.

8.Which statement would the author most probably agree with ( )
A.Don't escape when our self-image is broken.
B.Don't quit when goals no longer make you happy.
C.Never hesitate to replace “Plan A” with “Plan C”.

解析:推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“By learning to face...achieve your goals.”可知,作者建议要学会面对失败带来的失望,而不是贬低失败并假装一切都没发生过,这样会更加有助于实现目标。由此可推知,作者最可能同意当我们的自我形象受到质疑时,不要一味地逃避。

Last weekend, I participated in a “Getting to Know the Plants Around Us” activity organised by the Students' Union of our school. We were delighted to start our journey at dawn to explore the world of the plants around us.
The activity began with a lecture by a local botanist who taught us about the different characteristics and uses of various plants. Then we went for a walk outdoors to observe and collect samples of different plants. Throughout the event, I was struck by a variety of plants which exist in this world and I learnt about plants that are used for medical purposes as well as those plants that provide food and shelters for animals. I also gained a greater appreciation for the role that plants play in maintaining the balance of ecosystem.

However, after finishing the dumplings, he went up to the donation box on the
