One of this summer’s hottest books is “That Guy Was Cool.” Sounds like a great book for kids, doesn’t it But parents and teachers want to read this one, too. It can teach them something about the language of today’s kids.
So lots of people, young and old, went to see the book’s author, 19-year-old Korean girl Guiyeoni, on Saturday. She was in Beijing to sign books for her fans.
“Guiyeoni wrote a story that is near to us and goes to our hearts,” said Zhong Chuyi, a Junior 2 student in Beijing. “When I read it, I laughed and I cried.”
Like the “Meteor Garden” TV series, “That Guy Was Cool” tells an unusual story of love between two students. The girl is sweet, but she’s just average. The boy is good-looking and has everything, but he is often unhappy because his father died when he was very young. They become close and help each other to be happy. In the end, they fall in love.
“The girl in the book is like me. She’s simple and moody,” said Guiyeoni.
Guiyeoni’s book doesn’t only use words. It also uses things like emoticons. Emoticons are small icons, like smiling faces, and they are used to show emotions. Kids know what these things mean, because they often use them when they talk on the Internet or send messages with mobile phones.
Guiyeoni said she wrote this way because of her young readers.
“Writing with pictures is vivid and can say a lot of things,” she said.
Guiyeoni began writing the book’s story on the Web in 2001 when she was a Senior 2 student. Last year, she put that online story together to make this book. “That Guy Was Cool” has been made into a film, and it will come out in Korea next month.
This is Guiyeoni’s first of four books, and she hopes to keep writing as she goes through college.
She also has a message for young writers.
“I think that if they try hard, lots of young people can do this.”
34. Which of the following may not be an emoticon
A. 8-) B. C. See you. D. :{
35. The author used emoticons to write the book because ____.

36. Which of the following sayings has the closest meaning to “I think that if they try hard, lots of young people can do this”
Seeing is believing.

No news is good news.
Where there is a will, there is a way.

Shaolin kungfu comes from the Shaolin Temple. That’s where the name comes from, too.
The Shaolin Temple is more than 1,500 years old. It is in the Songshan Mountains of Henan.
But why do we have Shaolin kungfu Who made it
Many stories say that Bodhidharma, an Indian monk, went to the Shaolin Temple in the year 527. The monks there were not very strong. Bodhidharma said they studied too much, and they didn’t exercise enough. He then taught kungfu to the Shaolin monks to make them stronger.
But history says those stories aren’t true. Some of the Shaolin monks knew some kungfu before they went to the Shaolin Temple. They taught their kungfu to other monks there. The monks all worked together to make their kungfu better. After many years, their kungfu became Shaolin kungfu.
In the year 621, some Shaolin monks helped Tang Dynasty Emperor Li Shimin win a war. So Li made friends with the monks. He gave a lot of land to the temple. After that, the Shaolin temple and Shaolin kungfu became famous all over China.
But not all emperors liked kungfu. Sometime during the Qing Dynasty, people could not study Shaolin kungfu. Many monks had to leave the temple. They went to different places and saw many new kinds of kungfu. They studied them and took them back to the Shaolin Temple. All of the new ideas changed Shaolin kungfu a lot.
Today, Shaolin kungfu is still the largest and most famous kind of kungfu in China. People say, “All kungfu comes from Shaolin, but Shaolin kungfu is the best.”
Now, Shaolin monks want people to remember their kungfu. They are asking the United Nations to make Shaolin kungfu a “World Intangible Heritage.”
38. Who started Shaolin kungfu, according to history
an Indian monk

help them fight in wars

40. The story mainly talks about ____.
how to practice Shaolin kungfu
how Shaolin kungfu began
why Li Shimin won the war

41. Which of the following statements is true, according to the story

Children are by nature curious and energetic, and without proper guidance(指导). It is easy for them to do things that are obviously dangerous. Experimenting with smoking is one of the most common of these dangers.
Tobacco(烟草)use among children has long been a problem in many countries around the world, including China. But even though people began growing concerned about it years ago, the problem remains unsolved. Presently, about 30 percent of children in China have at least experimented with smoking. One middle school student frankly admitted to us why he smoked.
“We smoke mostly because we are curious about it. Besides, our parents also smoke. They set an example for us. Sometimes, we are forced to smoke by bullies. You know, they will beat those who don”t obey them.”
