Quitting smoking can be hard. It is much easier not to start at all!
One of the reasons that young people smoke is because they think it is cool. Cool people sometimes smoke a lot in movies, but you may not know that in real life some stars like Jackie Chan (成龙) think smoking is bad. Chan doesn't think it is cool at all!
And sports stars like Yao Ming don't smoke cigarettes, but they are very cool.
Sometimes people start smoking because their friends ask them to do so, or they see other people like their parents doing it and think that it’s ok. But if other people jumped off a bridge, would you follow them Of course not.
Some people think that smoking can stop stress (压力). But there are better ways to beat stress.
Exercise is one way. Exercise relaxes (放松) your muscles (肌肉). Next time you feel stressed about school, go for a run!
Exercise is also a good way to help you quit smoking if you have already started.
Go for a long walk without money or cigarettes, and breathe (呼吸) in the air around you. Maybe take some lunch and stop in a park, and think about how much better you feel without a cigarette in your mouth.
Also think about the money you will save by not smoking. You can spend it on much more fun things like music, clothes or nice food.
To stay away from smoking, or to help quit, keep a list with you saying why smoking is bad.
If you want to quit, tell your friends so they can help you. If they're good friends, they will help.
Millions of people have already quit smoking — It is not difficult if you try hard!

Friends ask them to smoke.

33. Which of the following statements is true according to the story
Exercise helps people to relax but can’t help quit smoking.
Starting smoking because others do so is like following someone to jump off a bridge.
Smoking doesn’t cost money.
It’s OK to smoke if your parents do.
34. The best title for this passage is ____.
A. Say No To Smoking B. Smoking Is Cool
C. Non-Smoking Stars D. How To Quit Smoking

Imagine (设想) this: It's May Day. You're traveling, and people are everywhere. You need to hurry to the train station, but you can't find the bus stop. Suddenly, you see your bus. It's on the other side of the street, and it's leaving soon! You try to fight through the crowds (人群), but the light turns red. You want to run across the street to catch the bus. But wait! You'd better not. If a policeman sees you, you'll have to pay a fine (罚款).
New traffic laws (交通法) say that if people cross the street when the light is red, they can be fined as much as 50 yuan. This became a law in October, and it was first put into use during the May Day holiday.
Traffic accidents killed more than 104,000 people in China last year. Chinese cities have more cars than ever. Drivers and pedestrians (行人) must work together to make the streets safer.
The law has new rules (规章) for drivers and pedestrians. Drivers have to slow down when they are close to crosswalks. If people are in a crosswalk, cars must stop to let them walk. If there are no traffic signals (信号), drivers must also let pedestrians go first.
The law also lets drivers solve (解决) problems between them more freely. In traffic accidents, if the drivers can agree on who pays for the damages (损失), they don't need to call the police. This way, they can solve the problem more quickly and keep traffic moving smoothly (顺畅地). Of course, if someone is badly hurt or killed, they should wait for police to come.
There are rules for bus drivers, too. If bus drivers smoke, drink or make phone calls while driving, they can be fined. Buses that carry too many people are also against the law.
Pedestrians will have to walk more safely under the new law. They must cross streets at crosswalks. And if there are no traffic signals, pedestrians must look to make sure it's safe to cross. Also, they shouldn't climb over the fences (栅栏) along streets. You might not see a car coming!
35. The passage mainly talks about ____.
China’s new traffic law
traffic problems in China
road accidents
new traffic rules for bus drivers
36. The example in the first paragraph is given to show ____.
how to catch a train
how people break traffic rules
how to avoid (避免) a policeman

37. Which of the following people breaks the new traffic law
a man waits for a girl to walk across the street
a bus driver smokes while he is driving
a man crosses the street at a crosswalk
a taxi driver slows down at a crosswalk
38. Two cars are in an accident. The two drivers get out of the cars and argue for a long time about how much money to pay. This causes a traffic jam. If the police see them, they will probably ____.
be killed on the road
be fined by the police
leave without getting any fine
fight with each other
C
Cars are lots of fun, but they could also be dangerous. We have to be careful when we drive them or ride in them.
It’s always a good idea to put on your seat belt when you’re in a car. Why Think about this example: You put an egg on a skateboard and give it a push. If the skateboard hits a stone, it will stop, but the egg won’t. It will fly through the air, hit the ground and break.
Now, think what would happen if you tied the egg to the skateboard. When the skateboard hits a stone, the egg won’t go flying; it will stay safely on the skateboard.
Volvo, a famous Swedish car maker, was the first to use seat belts in 1849.
Air bags are also very important for car safety, because sometimes a seat belt isn’t enough. If the car is going really fast and runs into something, seat belts could even hurt the people who wear them.
Most new cars have air bags in front of and next to the seats. When a car hits something, its airbags will come out quickly – in less than one second – to keep the people inside safe.
39. The passage mainly tells us ________.
how seat belts work to make cars safe
why we must tie the egg to the skateboard
two important ways to keep safe in cars
what air bags are
40. The writer gives the example of the egg to ________.
show why it is important to wear a seat belt when in a car
tell us what a skateboard is
show how to wear a seat belt
tell us that eggs are easy to break
41. The best title for this passage is ________.
A. Useful Seat Belts B. Make Yourself Safe in Cars
C. Air Bags Work Well D. Egg on Skateboard

八、书面表达:
One possible version:
We have many rules at our school. Some of them are good for us, but some of them don’t make any sense.
First of all, we are not allowed to go outside during school hours. I think that’s a good rule, because it keeps us safe. Also, we have to hand in our homework every morning. I don’t really mind that. I can always finish my homework on time.
One rule says we have to leave school before it closes at five in the evening. I don’t like that very much. Sometimes I want to spend more time talking with my classmates about math problems. The worst rule is that we are not allowed to play football at school. Our school is small, and it has only a basketball court. What a great pity it is! We have to kick water bottles.
I hope our school will make more good rules and fewer stupid ones.
