When I was a teenager, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) I was more responsible than today’s teenagers. After school, I had to do lots of jobs at home. Maybe the problems are different from the past. But that doesn’t make life easier. It’s probably the opposite!

Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave(挥手)to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.
I had always trav ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )eled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not relish the long train journey and had brought along many magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sat down and started to read magazines.
It was not lo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ng before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. Easter is still a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) great day for worship(敬拜), candy in baskets and running around the yard finding eggs, but every year it gets quite a bit worse for rabbits.
And no, not becaus ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e the kids like to pull their ears. The point is because of weather change, and some researchers found that rising temperatures are having harmful effects on at least five kinds of rabbits in the US.
Take the Lower Ke ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ys Marsh rabbit as an example. It lives on the islands, but it is seriously affected(影响)now by rising sea levels. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, an ocean level rise of 0.9-meter would destroy their living place completely.
The snowshoe ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) hare, on the other hand, has a color problem. Most of these rabbits change their fur color from white in the wintertime to brown in the summer, which gives them better cover from predators (捕食者) . As the number of days with snow becoming less, more and more rabbits are being left in white fur during the days of both fall and spring, making them an easier mark for predators.
American ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )pikas or rock rabbits might be the first of these species to go die out because of the weather change. Pikas live high in the cool, damp mountains. As global temperatures rise, they would naturally move to higher ground – but they already live on the mountaintops. They can’t go any higher. The National Wildlife Federation reports that they might not be able to stand the new temperatures as their living place heats up.
The volcano ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rabbit has the same problem. Recent studies have shown that their lower living place has already moved upward about 700 meters, but there are not right plants for them to move higher, so they have to stay in the middle.
Native to the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) US, pygmy rabbits weigh less than 1 pound and live in the American West. They are believed to be the smallest rabbits in the world. Their living places have been destroyed by development. They also live on winter cover, but lesser snowfall is leaving them unprotected.
All of these gi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ve new meaning to dressing up in a huge rabbit costume(服装)this Easter.
56. Why does the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )writer mention Easter at the beginning of the passage
A. To raise the problem about rabbits.
B. To remind people of Easter traditions.
C. To show the importance of Easter Day.
D. To discuss the relationship between Easter and rabbits.
57. Why can some rabbits be easily discovered by predators now
A. Because they have moved to the places with fewer plants.
B. Because they can hardly live on color cover as before.
C. Because they can’t change their color into white.
D. Because they are left to more skillful hunters.
58. What is the problem faced by rock rabbits and volcano rabbits
A. They are both affected by less snow.
B. Neither of them can find enough food.
C. Neither of them can move to higher place.
D. They are both affected by rising sea levels.
59. What can you infer from the passage
A. Predators are more skillful than before.
B. The weather is getting much hotter now.
C. There will be no rabbit costume for Easter soon.
D. People should care more about the rabbit problem.

Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my own room at night that scared (使惊恐) me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal.Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains (窗帘) seem to move when there was no wind.A very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the day.My imagination would run wild, and my heart would beat fast.I would lie very still so that the “enemy” would not discover me.
Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school.Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get in the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn’t let the leaders out of my sight.
Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others.Being popular was so important t o me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.

Many people begin to ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) use pencils from an early age. There are many kinds of pencils:some have erasers on top; some are colorful. You may have used many kinds of them for many years, but do you know the history of pencils

Almost everyon ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e has dropped some food on the floor and still wanted to eat it.If someone saw you drop it, he or she might have shouted, “ 5-second rule!” This so–called rule says food is OK to eat if you pick it up in five seconds or less. But is that true
Professor Anthony Hi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )lton from Ashton University, UK, tested the rule with his students. They found that food dropped for five seconds is less likely to contain bacteria(细菌) than if it sits there for longer.
For the study, Hilton and his students tested a lot of foods——bread, pasta, cookies and candy—to see how much bacteria they had when they made contact with the floor. They allowed the food to lie on the different types of flooring—carpet(地毯), laminate (复合地板) and tile(瓷砖) — for three seconds to 30 seconds.
Not surprisingly, the longer the food was on the floor, the more bacteria it had.And the type of floor where the dropped food landed had an effect.Bacteria are least likely to transfer(转移) from carpet, while they are most likely to transfer laminate or tiled surface after more than five seconds.
The study also found that the wetter the food, the more likely it was to pick up bacteria.Although most people are happy to follow the 5-second rule, eating food dropped on the floor still carries an infection(感染) risk.“It very much depends on which bacteria are on the floor at the time.” Hilton told Forbes.
