阅读下面四篇语言材料,然后按文后要求做题。
A
Which one do you like to hear first “Boss, I have good news and bad news,” I said. “The
good news is everything is ready. The hall has been well-decorated. All the guests have arrived.
The party will go as planned. The bad news is the dancers will be late because of the traffic jam.”
My boss looked at me. “That’s a big problem,” he said. He was right. It was surely a problem
because I started with the good news first.
According to a 2013 study published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin if
people have good news and bad news to share, most people prefer to share the good news first.
The researchers call it “emotion-protection”. It is a nice way of saying “maybe this won’t be so
bad”. But the same study shows that most listeners prefer to hear the bad news first, because they
think it reduces the worries. “If I have known the bad news, I’ll pay much attention to the good
news.” Maybe that’s because most of us prefer stories with happy endings. Or maybe that’s
because we prefer to be given possible ways to solve the problems.
Take my story as an example. Here’s how I worked this out. “Boss, I have good news and
bad news. The bad news is the dancers can’t arrive on time. The good news is everything is
well-prepared. And a worker in our company is good at playing the violin. She can do the
performance first so that there will be enough time for the dancers to catch up.”
So, next time you have no idea what news goes first, just put yourself in the listener’s shoes
and tell the bad news first. And the result will likely be better.
21.Why did the writer tell his story in Paragraph 1
A.To show the truth. B.To introduce the topic.
C.To tell us the boss was angry with him. D.To teach us good news should always go first.
22.What was the problem in the preparation for the party
A.The hall was in a mess. B.Some guests were not able to come.
C.The dancers couldn’t arrive on time. D.A worker was caught in the traffic jam.
23.What do we know about the study
A.It was carried out by the writer at the beginning.
B.It says only a few people like to share good news first.
C.It shows most listeners prefer to hear the bad news first.
D.It was published in 2003 in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.
24.How did the writer solve the problem finally
A.He told a story about himself. B.He turned to the boss for help.
C.He called the dancers to drive fast. D.He asked his workmate to play the violin.
25.What could be the best title of the passage
A.That Is a Big Problem B.A Study on Good News
C.Put Yourself in Others’ Shoes D.Bad News First Is a Better Choice
B
Dr Livesey was not at home, he was dining with Squire Trelawney, so we rode on to the
hall, where the squire lived. The two men were sitting in a great library next to a bright fire.
The officer told the story. The two men listened with surprise and interest. The officer then
left. I gave the papers to the doctor and they asked me to stay and eat something after my
adventures.
“Have you heard of Flint ” Dr Livesey asked the square.
“Yes, I have!” the square replied. “He was one of the most dangerous pirates that ever
sailed the seas. He only cared about money and everyone was afraid of him. No-one knows where
he buried his treasure.”
“Maybe these papers give a clue,” said the doctor. And we opened the captain’s papers.
Inside there was a detailed map. It showed an island, about nine miles long and five across. It had
two good natural harbours and a hill in the centre, marked Spy-glass Hill. There were three crosses
in red, two in the northern part and one in the south-west. Beside the last cross were the words:
Most of treasure here.
On the back of the map was this information:
The treasure is by a tall tree. Spy-glass Hill is behind you to the north, Skeleton Island is
below you to the south-east. The silver is in the north-east and the guns are in the north-west.
John Flint
Both the squire and Dr Livesey were very excited.
“Livesey,” said the squire, “we must stop work immediately. Tomorrow I’ll go to Bristol. In
ten days we’ll have the best ship and crew in England. Hawkins will come as the cabin-boy. You,
Livesey, will be the ship’s doctor. I can be the captain. We will have a good journey, and easily
find the treasure. Then we’ll have enough money to live happily ever after.”
“Of course I’ll come with you,” said the doctor. “But we must be careful. The men who
attacked the inn know about this map. They are dangerous and they also want the treasure. None
of us must say a word to anyone about what we’ve found.”

Take my story as an example. Here’s how I worked this out. “Boss, I have good news and

well-prepared. And a worker in our company is good at playing the violin. She can do the

The silver is in the north-east and the guns are in the north-west.

find the treasure. Then we’ll have enough money to live happily ever after.”
“Of course I’ll come with you,” said the doctor. “But we must be careful. The men who
attacked the inn know about this map. They are dangerous and they also want the treasure. None
of us must say a word to anyone about what we’ve found.”
