When an animal help ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s another animal,it usually gets something valuable in return. For a long time, many scientists thought that only people could act generously just because it feels good.
However,a new ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) study in Germany suggests that chimpanzees (an animal like a large monkey without a tail ) also do good things for no real reason. And so do children who are as young as 18 months of age. Maybe it is because humans and chimpanzees share an ancestor about 6million years ago.
People and c ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )himpanzees appear to develop such features without any other training, says Warneken,a scientist in Germany.
Warneken and his pa ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rtners worked on adult chimpanzees that live on an island in the African country of Uganda. They also worked with 18-month-old children in Germany. The researchers performed three experiments on the adult chimpanzees and two experiments on the kids. In the first animal experiment,a person tried to reach his arm into a cage to get a stick, but he couldn’t reach it. A chimpanzee was in the cage, and it could reach the stick if it wanted to.
Thirty-six chimpa ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nzees took part in this experiment one by one,and no chimpanzee saw what the other chimpanzees had done. Even though the animals hadn’t met the person before, they usually took the stick and gave it to the person. What’s more, they did this whether or not the person offered them bananas as a reward.
In a similar exper ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )iment,36 children acted in a similar way. They helped the person reach the stick, whether or not they were offered toys for their help.
Researchers did oth ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )er experiments on chimpanzees and babies. No rewards were offered in either experiment. And still, both the chimpanzees and children went out of their way to help. Still, the new study is different from earlier findings. Researchers have found that chimpanzees don’t give rewards of food to other chimpanzees, even if it costs them nothing to be generous.

But that’s not tr ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ue, according to Time For Kids magazine. Fear can be good for us.
Fear tells us abo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ut danger. Without fear, we wouldn’t know to run away from a tiger or step back from a cliff (悬崖).
In a study pub ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )lished in the Justice Quarterly journal in August, researchers from Michigan State University said that a healthy fear of crime keeps teenagers away from potentially dangerous people, places, and activities.
Fear makes us ju ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )mp, scream and sweat. But interestingly, sometimes we make ourselves feel fear on purpose. Think about scary(可怕的) books and movies, and also the long lines for a scary roller coaster ride.

Fear fills our bra ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )in with healthy chemical substances (化学物质), especially endorphins (内啡肽) and dopamine (多巴胺), and these things create feelings of happiness and excite us, according to Kerr.
In addition, when ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )you’re scared, your body produces a chemical which helps people bond with each other.
“Watch people wal ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )king out of a haunted house, and you’ll see lots of smiles and high fives,” Kerr told Time For Kids. That also explains why schools and companies organize challenging trips and physical activities to build up team spirit.
People experience ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )and deal with fear in different ways. If you happen to be a “coward” who gets scared easily, don’t worry. There is some evidence that being scared can help a person manage stressful situations.
Kerr said that th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ings like giving a report in front of your class or performing in a school play help build a sort of endurance (忍耐力) to fear that makes us more confident.
“You become ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )more comfortable with the physical experience of fear, and so you’re better able to work through it during tense situations,” said Kerr.
So learn to l ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ove your fear. It only grows when we forget how helpful our fear is trying to be.
52. What is the passage mainly about
A. People’s misunderstandings about fear.
B. Different ways to deal with fear.
C. The benefits fear brings us.
D. A new study about fear.
53. Why is a sca ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ry roller coaster ride helpful to people according to the passage
A. It improves people’s ability to survive in the modern world.

RE1: The Most Helpful ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) Invention of All Time Cindy---Saturday, 4 December, 2010There are many ----the phone, the car, the plane----but they are not my choices. For an everyday and useful invention, I think it is the air conditioner. I live in Hong Kong, and during the summer, the temperature reaches 35℃ or more. It’s terrible! Without the air conditioner, people here cannot work or study. Some people would even get sick if it remained hot for several days.

We can now communicate with people and do business in a more convenient way. I have a clothes store in Tokyo. I also have a shop online. Now, people from all over the world can buy my clothes through the Internet. And I can easily keep in touch with my family in America and friends around the world. It’s faster than a regular mail, and it’s cheaper than using the phone!
RE3: The Most Helpf ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ul Invention of All Time Alice---Sunday, 5 December, 2010John, I agree---the Internet is useful.
