Dad hurried to ge ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t home before dark so he could go for a run,but he had forgotten to wear his safety belt— a mistake 75% of the US population make every day. Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father," But, Dad, you can't be healthy if you're dead." The big question is why so many people drive cars without wearing safety belts.
There have been many misunderstandings about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars about forty years ago. The following are three of the most common.
Number One: Safety belts aren't needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour.
Truth: When two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other, an unbelted driver will hit himself on the front window of the car with a hard force, it feels like diving headfirst into the ground from a height of 10 meters.
Number Two: Safety belts "trap(困住)"people in cars. So if the cars are burning or sinking in water, it’s difficult for people to move.
Truth: Sorry, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )but studies show that if people are not wearing safety belts, they are easy to be knocked unconscious(昏迷). So they will have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to have a clear head to free free themselves from such dangerous situations, not to be trapped in them.
Number Three: It's best to be "thrown clear" of a serious accident.
Truth: Sorry again, but any accident serious enough to "throw you clear" is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times greater when people are "thrown clear."

24.We can learn from the passage that_______ when someone is “thrown clear”.
A. his life will be saved B. nothing will be belt in the car

What will man be li ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ke in the future——in 5000 or even 50,000 years from now We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an examp ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )le. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, men are usually about three inches* taller. Five hundred years is quite a short period of time in the river of the long history, so we may guess that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a lot. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity*. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and finally we shall need larger ones! This may bring about a physical change to the head, in particular the forehead*, will grow larger.
Nowadays ou ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r eyes are always in use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is probably that man’s eyes will grow stronger.
On the othe ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r hand, we will make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are possibly to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive* because they are used a lot in modern life.
But what about hair ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) This will probably disappear from the body as time passes by because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both men and women will probably have no hair.
Perhaps all this gi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ves the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may be true. All the same, no matter what these changes are, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and feelings similar to our own.
33. We can probably read the passage above in a ____.
A. movie poster B. science magazine C. storybook D. guidebook
34. The change in man ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )’s size of forehead will probably be because _______.
A. he makes use onIy 20% of the brain’s capacity
B. his brain has grown larger over the past centuries
C. the other 80% of his brain will grow finally
D. he will use his brain more and more as time goes on
35. Which of the following is TRUE about a human being in the future
A. He thinks and feels in different way.
B. He has smaller eyes and wears better glasses.
C. He is hairless because hair is no longer useful.
D. His fingers grow weaker because he doesn’t use them.
36. What’s the best title of the passage
A. How man’s life will be in the future

From my father I ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) have learned a lot. And I’m very thankful to him. I remember when I was a child my father always got up very early, quietly putting on his clothes and going off to work. To arrive in time to open his tiny store at 8:30, he needed to leave our apartment at 6:30. After all, he had to take a bus and then the subway. The last journey was a long walk through a neighborhood much of which was full of the smell of rubbish. I learned: it is very important to work. No excuse.
When I was 12, I would, on some Saturdays, go to my father’s store to help out. After helping set up the outside clothing display, for the rest of the day, I’d watch to make sure no one stole anything. When I noticed someone looking unusual or strange, I would look the person in the eye, smile and say, “May I help you ” Usually that worked, but sometimes, someone would run off with something. The first time, I ran after the thief but my father shouted, “Martin, stop! There is no need to do that.” It’s true that safety is more important than money.
After 10 years of hard work, he saved up enough money to buy his first car, a cheap one—he wouldn’t buy one until he could afford to pay for it without borrowing money. I learned: buy only what you can afford. Buying necessary food and clothing won’t make us go in debt(债务). The unnecessary things won’t give us happiness, which comes from achievement only.

Kamal Meattle, in Ne ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )w Delhi, India, grows 400 plants in his office building’s greenhouse to help clean its indoor air.
On the roof of an off ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ice building in India’s capital, the world’s smoggest city, Kamal Meattle has a special way of cleaning the air: a greenhouse with 400 common plants. Meattle has 800 other plants spread throughout its lower six floors, greening each room and hallway. Their job: remove harmful things from the outdoor air.
Meattle uses rainwate ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r to water the trees so that they can grow faster and take in more pollutants. He’s asking India’s new government to require rainwater farming and to paint roofs, and buses, white. And he’s pushing to build one of the world’s largest parks, complete with greenhouses.
As Meattle te ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )lls it, he really had no choice but to try something new. “My doctors told me to leave India in 1992,” he says, mentioning his breathing problem because of the city’s air pollution. He decided to stay, trying instead to solve a society-wide problem that’s become increasingly serious.
“Delhi’s unfit for ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )living between October and March,” Meattle says, noting how often its air pollution becomes “very unhealthy” or even “dangerous”. In fact, New Delhi’s smog is now nearly three times worse than Beijing’s. The WHO found that the city had the world’s dirtiest air, and the cities from second to fourth are also in India. India’s indoor air pollution is even worse. The WHO says it’s India’s second biggest killer, after high blood pressure, and results in 1.3 million deaths every year.
But can plants really clean the air
NASA published se ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )veral studies in the 1980s showing indoor plants could clean the air. It later tested the value of the plants to both clean air and recycle waste in building known as the BioHome. Other studies have also suggested that plants could help clean indoor air.
Wolverton, a NASA ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) researcher, has been working in Japan, where plants have been used to make 50 to 60 “ecological gardens(生态花园)” in hospitals. He says there’s growing interest in South Korea and China.
Not everyone believes ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )that. “I certainly would not count on plants to clean indoor air…” To get them to work, you’d need too many plants, ” says John Girman. He says a 1,500-square-foot house would need 680 plants and the result would be “an indoor forest”.
“We have an a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ir treatment plant,” Meattle says of his idea. The result, he adds, is fewer worker sick days, great productivity, and air as clean as that in Davos, Switzerland.
52. What did Meattle do after the doctors advised him to leave India
A. He went abroad between October and March.
B. He raised money for growing pants in his office.
C. He tried to solve the indoor air pollution problem.
D. He called on people to care about the environment problem.
53. According to the passage, the BioHome might be .
A. a place to test the plants’ role in cleaning the indoor air
B. a place to do experiments on the size of indoor forest
C. a project about how plants can grow well
D. a project about what plants are fit for offices
54.From the passage we know Meattle is .
A.honest and caring B.emotional and wise
C.experienced and brave D.creative and reponsible
55.The passage is mainly about .
A.a new practice of cleaning indoor air
B.plants to reduce indoor air pollution
C.the serious air polution problem
D.Meattle’s fight against polluted indoor air
D篇
解析:本篇属于论说文,由 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )Kamal Meattle运用植物来清洁室内空气,以及围绕can plants really clean the air展开的论说,主要介绍了植物在清洁空气方面的作用。
52. C
解析:此题属于细节题,通过“after ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) the doctors advised him to leave India”定位在第四段最后一句“He decided to stay, trying instead to solve a society-wide problem that’s become increasingly serious ”,结合首段“Kamal Meattle…grows…to help clean its indoor air”可知society-wide problem是the indoor air pollution problem,所以答案选C项。
所以答案应该选D.
53. A
解析:本题属于推理判断题,根据题干th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e BioHome定位到第七段,由“It later tested the value of the plants to both clean air and recycle waste in building known as the BioHome”可知the BioHome是测试植物对于空气清洁和废物循环的价值的一个地方,不是关于the size of indoor forest的实验、也不是一个项目,所以B、C、D项不正确,选A项。
54. D
解析:此题是推理判断题。结合文章第 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )二段“Kamal Meattle has a special way of cleaning the aircreative and reponsibl”第四段“…he really had no choice but to try something new…He decided to stay, trying instead to solve a society-wide problem that’s become increasingly serious”可知,Meattle富有创新思维和高度责任感,所以应选择D项。
55. A
解析:此题属于主旨大意题。通读全文,Ka ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )mal Meattle的special way of cleaning the air,以及围绕can plants really clean the air?展开的论说,我们得知是在介绍植物在清洁室内空气方面的作用,B、D项只是截取文章部分信息、过于片面,C项air polution problem只是细节信息、不是全文说明的对象,所以正确选项应该选A.

It was one of the hot ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )test days of the dry season. It had not rained in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. If it did not rain soon, we would lose everything. On this day, I witnessed(目睹) a wonder.
I was making lunch when I saw my 6-year-old son, Billy, walking very slowly toward the woods. Minutes later he came running out again, toward the house. Soon after, I saw him walking toward the woods again. This went on for an hour. Finally I walked out of the house quietly and followed him.
Billy cupped both hands in front of him as he walked, careful not to drop the water he carried. Leaves slapped his face but he kept walking into the woods. Then I saw an amazing sight. Several large deer stood in front of him. Billy walked right up to them. I saw a tiny baby deer lying on the ground. It was dying of thirst, and it lifted its head with great effort to drink the water in my boy’s hands.
When the water was gone, Billy ran back to the house. I followed him to the tap. Billy opened it and a small trickle(细流) came out. He knelt down, letting the drops slowly fill up his "cup".
Now I understood what was going on. The week before, he tried giving water to our horses but I told him not to waste water. Now when he stood up and turned, I was there in front of him. His eyes filled with tears, “I’m not wasting,” he said. I joined him with a small pot of water from the kitchen. I let him walk to the baby deer alone while I stood at the edge of the woods. As tears rolled down my face, they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops... as if the sky itself was crying.

Have you ever had dr ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )eams about building a robot Or putting together a spaceship Or even seeing your face made out of chocolate Done. All you need is a 3-D printer!
The possibilities ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )of 3-D printing seem endless. All the user has to do is to design an object on the computer and choose a material to print in. The printers print in hundreds of different materials including glass, sugar and even skin! When the user presses “print”, the 3-D printer spreads the material layer(层) by layer and like magic the object is produced.
The first 3-D ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )printer was invented in 1986 by an American, Charles Hull. But 3-D printing has only become cheap enough recently for most people to use. Designers now use 3-D printing to create unusual things. The Dutch artist Dirk Vander Kooj prints furniture made from old fridges. And doctors have used 3-D printing to print human body parts! The Telegraph reported in February that scientists from Cornell Medical College even printed a man-made ear.
But like a lot of new ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )technologies, if 3-D printing gets into the wrong hands, it can be dangerous. In 2011 a group of four men in the US used 3-D printing to produce ATM skimmers (提款机盗刷器). These were placed on an ATM and stole over $400,000 from users of the ATM. It is terrible to think that criminals like them might one day use a 3-D printer to print a gun.
But for better or for ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) worse, 3-D printing has been put into use. In a few years, you’ll probably be wondering how you could ever live without your 3-D printer!
