Food festivals are a common occurrence in the UK and take place in all sorts of places and at all sorts of times. Whatever your taste, there’s a food festival to match—no matter how specialized.
Meatopia
This three-day,London-based festival takes place at the end of August and is a meat lover’s paradise. In addition to a range of meat products, from burgers to steaks, attendees can listen to live music, watch butchery shows, and attend informal meat-based workshops.
Vegfest
If you prefer a festival that will help you meet your five a day, then Vegfest fest is for you. This vegan-friendly event takes place several times a year. Here you can enjoy a wide selection of freshly prepared vegetables, learn cooking tips and hear talks on nutrition to help you make the most of your plant-based search.
The Marmalade Festival
Held in Cumbria, this festival has been running for 13 years. It includes a competition to find the best homemade marmalade. There are thousands of entries from over 30 different countries across the globe.
The Ginger (姜) and Spice Festival
The Ginger and Spice Festival, held in Market Drayton, celebrates its town’s historic connection to Robert Clive, who returned from India with ginger. Because of this, they specialize in baking gingerbread, but also sell a range of spices from mild to hot.
The National Honey Show
It started in 1921 and is the largest event of its kind. This three-day event attracts over 2,000 participants to their traditional competition, and offers lectures and workshops on beekeeping and,of course, that syrupy golden honey.
While people’s tastes are different from each other, the UK has something to offer most people. When my father married my mother in 1943 he gave my mother a 1937 crown coin and told her to keep it in the back of her purse and not spend it. This would mean that she always felt that she was protected and would always have money if she really needed it.
When I was married in 1970 my husband who had heard this story obtained a 1937 crown for me and I have always kept it in my wallet and I have always had enough for my needs.
A friend recently fell on hard times partly through external (外部的) circumstances and partly through poor planning. Friends and I have loaned her money, paid her bills, even given her food and tried to teach her budget techniques, but none of them has been a solution. She has just slipped deeper and deeper into financial trouble and depression.
Last week she looked pale and unwell, very depressed and hopeless. I then thought about how the crown, a reminder of another’s care and love, had protected me so I went to the bank for a $100 dollar bill. I told my friend the story and asked her to keep the $100 in the back of her wallet. It turned out that she didn’t have a wallet so she put the money in a little pencil case where she kept her coins. She immediately felt better. “I feel rich and thank you for being a good friend” she said and we were both a bit teary.
The reason for passing this on is not to praise any generosity on my part but to show the power of “random acts of kindness”. I went home and remembered a little wallet I had that I’d never used and thought “I’ll give that to my friend.” I opened it and inside found $100. The universe is very just and if your heart is open the reward always comes.
24.What did the 1937 crown coin from the author’s father mean to her mother
A.His concern for her. B.His pity and protection for her.
C.His care and love for her. D.His pride and respect for her.
25.Where did the author’s friend keep the $100 dollar-bill
A.In the back of her wallet. B.In a little pencil case.
C.In the pocket of her raincoat. D.In the layer of her suitcase.
26.What can he inferred from the last Paragraph
A.The author became rich all of a sudden.
B.The author’s friend would receive a wallet as a gift.
C.The author’s friend was not touched by her story.
D.The author felt uncomfortable when receiving the bill.
27.What can be the best title for the text
A.A hard life B.The help to a friend
C.A crown coin D.A gift from my father

Nestled in the waters off the coast of Tuscany, Italy, an unusual seafloor sculpture park is safeguarding its ocean environment.
Fisherman Antonio Verdi has been casting his nets in these waters since his youth along the Maremma coastline. It was in the 1980s that he began to notice the clear signs: the seabed was becoming barren, with exhausted fish stocks. Until recently, Antonio Verdi has found himself not only competing with the decline of ocean resources but also with threatening practices of illegal “bottom trawlers(拖网捕鱼的人)”, who randomly spoil a large quantity of ocean life as they fish, dragging a weighted net along the seafloor behind their boats.
Antonio Verdi’s style of artisanal fishing(手工捕鱼), in contrast, is friendly to nature as damaging the ecosystem could reduce fishermen’s income. He understood that the success of his fishing activity was linked to the good state of the environment. The underwater “House of Fish” sculpture park, which was started in 2015, was encouraged by this fisherman. “One of the most effective solutions is to physically prevent trawling through artificial reefs, so I started working on this project, trying to combine the protection of the seabed with something that could also give an added value to our environment, something as beautiful as a sculpture,”he stated.
Sculptures or rocks can break weighted trawler nets. They can also function as artificial reefs, offering habitats for corals and other sea creatures. Due to the presence of the underwater sculptures, some species not seen in a long while such as groupers and lobsters have rejoined the waters. The sculpture park represents both an artistic expression and a defence against destructive seafloor trawling.
Presently, 39 massive stone sculptures are scattered across the seabed along an area of Tuscan coastline near the town of Talamone. In the near future, Antonio Verdi hopes to extend his protective efforts in coastal waters. “The sea is still under threat,” he says, “and my mission to protect it continues.”
28.What does the underlined word “barren” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Unproductive. B.Delicate. C.Fruitful. D.Nutritious.
29.How does Antonio Verdi’s fishing differ from that of the illegal “bottom trawlers”
A.He uses larger nets to catch more fish.
B.His method is less damaging to the ecosystem.
C.He focuses on catching specific high-value fish.
D.His fishing involves the use of underwater sculptures.
30.What impact has the sculpture park had on the local ocean life
A.A shift in the types of fish caught by local fishermen.
B.A decrease in the number of fish due to the sculptures.
C.The return of species that had previously disappeared from the area.
D.The extinction of some species due to the increased human presence.
31.What is the relationship between human activities and the ocean environment according to this article
A.The ocean is too vast to be affected by human activities.
B.Human activities have no significant impact on sea creatures.
C.The only way to protect sea creatures is to prohibit human activities.
D.Fishing should be in line with efforts to maintain a healthy ocean ecosystem.

When we think about how our senses work,we usually imagine them operating separately: you sniff a flower, and the smell is delivered uninterrupted from nose to brain. However,it’s more complex than that. Most evidence for cross-modal perception (知觉) comes from studies into sound and vision (视觉) .
But research that shows other senses crossing over is coming out all the time, and it seems that even sound and smell sometimes form an unlikely pairing.
When New York researchers,Daniel Wesson and Donald Wilson, tried to find out the truth about a “mysterious” area of the brain called the olfactory tubercle, they had to deal with this fact. Originally, they only intended to measure how olfactory tubercle cells in mice responded to smell. But during testing,Wesson noticed that every time he put his coffee cup down, the mouse cells jumped in activity. In fact, the olfactory tubercle is well-placed to receive both smell and sound information from the outside world.
Later they found that among separate cells, most responded to a smell but a significant number were also active when a sound was made. Some cells even behaved differently when smell and sound were presented together,by increasing or decreasing their activity.
Of course, mice aren’t people,so research team has been carrying out further experiments. They pulled together a group of people and gave them various drinks to smell. Participants were asked to sniff the drinks, and then match them to appropriate musical instruments and produce the notes at different levels. The results were interesting: piano was regularly paired with fruity fragrances; strong smells sounded like the instruments that are made of metal.
Further research found that listening to different sounds can change your perceptions. Studying taste this time, the team ordered some special toffee (太妃糖) and put together “soundscapes” corresponding to bitterness and sweetness. Participants tasted similar pieces of toffee while listening to each soundscape, and found the toffee more bitter or sweeter, depending on which soundtrack they were listening to.
Studies like this are helping scientists correctly describe our understanding of the senses, and how the brain combines them with its advantage. The consequences are worth considering. Could we see musicians work together with chefs to produce sound-improved food and drink Will you be ordering a coffee with a soundtrack to bring out your favorite smell Come to think of it,that could be one thing you hope coffee shop chains don’t get round to.
32. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. A lot of research focuses on the senses.
B. Sound and vision are relatively easy to study.
C. There can be a link between sound and smell.
D. Evidence about the way senses work is hard to obtain.
33. What can you conclude from Wesson and Wilson’s research .
A. the mice were affected more significantly by sound
B. the result confirmed what the researchers had suspected
C. the mice seemed to be afraid of certain sounds or smells
D. the connection between sound and smell was found by chance
34. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3
A. Participants took an active part in the experiments.
B. The purpose of the further experiments was totally different.
C. The result failed to support what was found in previous experiments.
D. Experiments showed that links between sound and smell were consistent.
35. How does the author feel about the effect of the research
A. She is excited about the creative chances.
B. She is surprised at the recent developments.
C. She is convinced that the findings will be used soon.
D. She is worried about how the knowledge can be applied.

What’s social jet lag (社交时差) Social jet lag occurs when you stay up later and then sleep in later on weekends than you do on weekdays. Changing the hours that you sleep from day to day affects your body’s natural internal clock.
Social jet lag affects the body similarly to travel jet lag. When you shift your sleeping hours, your body feels as if it were in a different time zone. ___36___ For example, if you stay up late on Saturday night and then sleep in on Sunday morning, you will likely have a hard time falling asleep on Sunday night. This is because your body has not been awake for enough hours to feel tired at your usual Sunday bedtime. ___37___
Yet, frequently changing your body’s internal clock doesn’t just cause daytime sleepiness.
___38___ Social jet lag has been linked with several chronic (慢性的) health problems. Changes in internal clock caused by inconsistent sleeping hours lead to changes in the circulatory (循环) system and raise the risk of heart disease. Individuals who regularly experience social jet lag are also more likely to smoke cigarettes and consume more caffeine. These habits can significantly influence sleep.
Sticking to your sleep schedule is an important part of addressing social jet lag. ___39___ A 2019 study found that when participants kept their sleep and wakeup times within 15 to 30 minutes of the same time each day, they reported better sleep, less depression, and less stress. Study participants were also able to improve their cognitive reaction time scores.
___40___ If you usually change your regular sleep schedule on weekends, it may be time to try to keep a more consistent one. While it may feel difficult to keep the same sleeping hours each day, you will likely notice the health benefits right away.
A. It can significantly impact your health as well.
B. This can make falling and staying asleep difficult.
C. Moreover, establishing a regular sleep schedule is crucial.
D. Adjust your sleep schedule, and everything will be OK.
E. This likely makes waking up early on Monday morning difficult.

Catherine had stayed at home all her life to look after her three children, but now, she, who lost her husband in a car accident, had to step out and earn money to make ends meet. With zero work experience and no professional degree, her chances of getting hired for a well-paid job were next to zero.
One day, after dropping her children at school, Catherine spotted a construction site (建筑工地). “I think I can work here,” she thought and walked close to the manager.
“Hi, are you hiring (雇佣) ” she asked. “Yes, we are,” the manager looked at Catherine from head to toe.“Are you sure you can work here This job requires a lot of hard work.” “I’m ready for it,” she told the manager and signed a contract (合同) to work a 12-hour shift (轮班). However, Catherine kept her new job a secret from her children. She thought they would feel embarrassed after learning their mother worked at a construction site.
Every morning, after dropping her children to school, she would go to the construction site and work until her shift ended. She would pick up heavy bricks (砖块) on her shoulder to transport them from one part of the site to the other. One evening, Catherine’s son, Peter, told her about an upcoming competition in school that required mothers to join. In the competition, students would wear blindfolds (眼罩) and have to recognize their mothers without looking at them. “That sounds like such a cool event, Peter!” Catherine said excitedly. “I can’t wait for it!” “I won’t go there with you, mom,” Peter replied. “But why ” What her son said next was something Catherine wasn’t prepared to hear.
“Mom I would have to touch your hands to recognize you, and everyone would look at your hands,” Peter explained. “Your hands are so ugly.
