When she looked ahead, Florence Chadwick saw nothing but a solid wall of fog. Her body was numb. She had been swimming for nearly sixteen hours. Already she was the first woman to swim the English Channel in both directions. Now, her goal was to become the first woman to swim from Catalina Island to the California coast.
On that fourth of July morning in 1952, the sea was like an ice bath and the fog was so dense that she could hardly see her support boals. Against the freezing cold water, she struggled on-hour after hour-while millions watched on national television.
In one of the boats alongside Florence, her mother and her trainer offered encouragement. They told her it wasn't much farther. But all she could see was fog. They urged her not to quit. However, with only a half mile to go, she asked to be pulled out.
Still warming her chilled body several hours later, she told a reporter, “Look, I'm not excusing myself, but if I had seen land, I might have made it." It was not tiredness or even the cold water that defeated her. It was the fog. She was unable to see her goal.
Two months later, she tried again. This time, despite the same dense fog, she swam with her faith intact and her goal clearly pictured in her mind. She knew that somewhere behind that fog was land and this time she made it! Florence Chadwick became the first woman to swim the Catalina Channel, overshadowing the men's record by two hours!

Teaching kids to care for the environment is no easy task. However, Eco-Warriors, a recycling program at three urban schools, is making strides(进展). Led by environmental educator Mark Thompson, the program aims to instill a sense of environmental responsibility in students from a young age.
Thompson's students come from areas where trash litters thestreets, and recycling bins are rare. "Many of these kids have never been taught the importance of recycling," Thompson says. "When we started, they thought recycling was just an extra chore, and they didn't see the point." But with patience and creativity, Thompson has managed to change their perspectives.
The Eco-Warriors program inyolves hands-on activities such as sorting recyclable materials, creating art from recycled items, and visiting local recycling plants. In addition to these activities, students are encouraged to start recycling initiatives(倡议)at home. As part of their course, they learn about the environmental impactof waste and the benefits of recycling.
Surveys conducted at the end of each school year reveal that students' attitudes toward recycling have significantly improved. "We have students who have convinced their families to start recycling at home,"Thompson reports. "It's amazing to see how passionate they've become."
Moreover, the program has positively influenced students' behavior beyond recycling. Teachers have noticed a decline in littering around the school and an increase in environmental club memberships. “It's not just about recycling anymore," Thompson says. "The kids are learning to take care of their community and the planet."

Did you know that even if you exercise regularly, you might still be what researchers call an “active couch potato" Think about this: If you exercise once a day for 30 to 45 minutes, you could still spend 80% to 90% of your waking hours sitting. A study in England showed that while over 55% of adults met the recommended physical activity guidelines, they still sat for abouat 10 hours a day.
Spending too many hours inactive each day, indluding watching TV (a classic couch potato activity),can increase the risk of fithess and more tlian 30 other dhronic(慢性的) illnesses. Inactivity has also been found to raise chances of lieart disease. This imbalance can caticel oul many of the positive effects of exercising, such as controlling blood sugar and improving blood flow to the legs and brain. Just four to six houts of inactivity can cause a drop in an enzyme(酶)that helps the body use fat for energy.
Researchers from New Zealand compared people who sat for 18 hours without exercising with "active couch potatoes" who exercised for 30 iinutes between two nine-hour periods of inactivity. They also compared these groups with a third group who did light exercise for just two minutes every half an hour. The sedentary(久坐不动的):and "active couch potato" groups had higher blood sugar levels, while the light exereise group had better blood sugar control.
The restlts of these studies point to the same conclusion: No matter how active you are, it's important to be less of a couch potato-or a more active one. So, if your New Year's resolútion is to start a new exercise plan, remember to take breaks to avoid sitting too long by walking for a few minutes throughout the day too.

33. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.The benefits of regular exercise: B.The harm of long-term inactivity.
C.The link between enzyme and fithess. D.The importance of blood sugar control.

A.By making comparisons. B.By analyzing previous data.
C.By interviewingparticipants. D.By measuring physical responses.
35. What does the author suggest for those with a new exercise plan
