Born in Ayrshire, in 1759 to William Burness, a poor farmer, Robert Burns was the eldest of seven children. He spent his youth working on his father’s farm, but in spite of being poor he also read a lot. His father employed a teacher for Robert and his younger brother Gilbert. At l5 Robert was the principal worker on the farm and this encouraged him to start writing. It was at this age that Robert wrote his first poem Handsome Nell.
When his father died in 1784, Robert and his brother became partners on the farm. However, Robert was more interested in the romantic nature of poetry than the hard work of farming.
However, at the point of giving up farming, his first collection Poems, Chieflyin the Scottish Dialect was published and received much praise from critics. This, together with pride of being a parent, made him stay in Scotland. He moved around the country, finally arriving in Edinburgh, where he joined the circles of the artists and writers who were called the “Ploughman Poet”.
In a matter of weeks he was changed from a local hero to a national celebrity (名人). The fame did not bring a fortune and he took up a job to make additions to the low income. While working he continued to write, contributing songs to the likes of James Johnson’s Scots Musical Museum and George Thomson’s A Select Collection of Original Scottish Airs for the voice. In all, more than 400 of Robert’s songs are still in existence.
The last years of Robert’s life were devoted to writing great poetic masterpieces such as The Lea Rig,Tam o’Shanter and A Red, Red Rose. At the age of 37, he died of heart disease caused by the hard physical work he did when he was young.
On the day of his burial tens of thousands of people came to watch and pay their respect. However, his popularity then was nothing compared to the heights it has reached since. On the anniversary (周年纪念) of his birth, Scots both at home and abroad celebrate Robert Burns with a supper — a celebration which would undoubtedly make him proud.

Artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能)is making its way into classrooms, suggesting a future where education is more personalized and active. AI’s ability to customize learning and provide immediate feedback could change how students learn, making education more effective and attracting.
Schools globally are starting to see the benefits of AI. For example, adaptive learning platforms can now tailor lessons to each student’s pace and style of learning, improving engagement and understanding. DreamBox Learning, an AI-powered math platform, has already showed how such technology can improve students’ abilities in problem solving.
However, there’s a notable concern raised alongside these advancements —the AI divide, or the growing gap between those who have access to advanced AI tools and those who do not. A 2023 report by the Educational Data Trust found that wealthier school districts are three times more likely to have adopted AI-powered learning platforms compared to the under-resourced districts. We don’t know what this technology will look like 10 years from now, but the current trend shuts out poor districts. It’s in the big dog’s best interest to do so, but it sucks anyways.
Addressing the AI divide requires a concerted effort. Policymakers have the power to level the playing field by supporting AI accessibility in all schools. Schools and educators have a role to play too. They must train their students to use AI as a tool. They can foster partnerships to share AI resources and focus on building universally essential skills like critical thinking and digital literacy. Tech companies and community groups have roles to play as well, such as offering AI expertise and support to schools lacking resources.
AI in education has both advantages and disadvantages, with the promise of transformative(带来变革的)learning coming alongside the risk of deepening divides. As we accept AI’s potential, we must also make sure that it serves as a tool for to help everyone, paving the way for a future where every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Last night, I was trying to go to a store to buy a couple bottles of water and some food because the weather report said it was supposed to snow more heavily than the last time. I had to prepare some necessities for daily use in advance.
The store is three miles from my house. Right when I was about to turn on the road, my car said overheating, my engine locked up and the car shut off. My husband and I got out of the car, trying to push the car into a nearby repair shop. But it was too hard for us to push the car.
At first three different people asked us if we were okay and when we said no, they just drove off. It was like they just wanted to know if we needed help but not actually help.
Finally, a man calling himself David stopped his car and helped us push our car into the nearby repair shop. And then he asked if we were going to the store because he had to go into the store and at least inside we could get warm. We agreed, because we were going to the store, and so he took us to the store.
When we got inside the store, I realized this man was walking with a stick but it didn’t stop him from offering to help strangers, like us, trying to push a car through snow. We were so moved by his kind act that we helped him with his shopping, considering that he was disabled. We also bought what we needed. After that, we went to the checkouts together, and I paid the bill for David. He was very thankful. David knew that our car broke down and that we couldn’t drive, so he offered to drive us home. Soon, we arrived at our house. We thanked David again. Then he drove away.
