Passage 1
On the evening of April 15, 2019, people in Paris and the world watched as the Notre-Dame Cathedral(巴黎圣母院) caught fire and was heavily damaged. Five years later, the cathedral reopened to the public on Dec.7,2024.
The study and research over the last five years have failed to find the cause of the fire, reported AFP. The leading ideas are that it was started by an electrical problem or a thrown-away cigarette. To look into these different ideas, people have built a 3D simulation (模拟) of how the fire started. So far, there is no information suggesting that the fire was set on purpose.
Outside of the study and research, the fire has resulted in a big effort to make the cathedral return to its original look. About 250 companies and hundreds of experts took part in the project, which cost hundreds of millions of euros.
The cathedral's spire(尖顶), which was lost in the fire, has been rebuilt exactly like the original. The colorful painted glass windows have got back their color and the walls are shining again. There is also a hidden network of pipes that can let out millions of water drops if there is another fire.
"The challenge of rebuilding in five years has been successfully met, "Olivier Ribadeau-Dumas, Notre-Dame's keeper, told The New York Times. Once reopened, the cathedral is expected to welcome 14 to 15 million yearly visitors, according to Olivier.
