Passage 7
Huang Xuhua, a great Chinese scientist, left us on February 6th, 2025. But his great deeds (事迹) and spirit will always be in our hearts and light up China's way forward.
Huang was born in Guangdong in 1926. When he was a child, he saw his country suffer from foreign attacks. These sad memories made him study hard and promise to use his knowledge to make the country strong.
In the 1950s, when China started to develop nuclear submarines(核潜艇), it was really challenging. Huang Xuhua wasn't daunted and took on the task. To keep the project secret, he and his team stopped talking to the family members. Huang Xuhua left his hometown and didn't go back for many years.
During the design, they faced a lot of difficulties. They couldn't get help from foreign experts, so they had to do research on their own. Using simple tools, they carefully calculated(计算) and did experiments. After many tests, they slowly solved these problems.
In the 1970s, China's first nuclear submarine was successfully built and tested. This made China one of the few countries able to build such submarines. Huang Xuhua didn't stop there. He kept working on improving submarine technology. His hard work won him many awards, like the "Medal of the Republic" in 2019.
Remembering Huang Xuhua, we're encouraged by his life. Young people should learn his spirit, bravely face challenges, and try hard to keep his spirit alive to make China stronger.

Climate change is having a strong effect on areas of the world. Other than causing terrible storms in some places or periods of no rain for months at a time in other places, climate change has influenced the temperature of the sea near land.Higher temperatures are causing glaciers to melt(融化) which is causing the sea level around the world to rise.
▲ As areas of land beside the sea go under the water, the animals that used to live in these areas are forced to look for new homes.Freshwater lakes near the sea also become filled with salt water. In addition to these lakes, certain lands that are normally wet but still above sea level become flooded. These wetlands are important to the environment because they can slow down or stop flooding of dry land above them.
While the rising sea level influences the natural world, it also has a big effect on how people live. For example, when the sea level rises and the salt water moves higher up on the land, it can permeate the ground where people get the freshwater they drink. Underground water becomes salty. Water from the sea is bad for cars, trucks and boats. Bridges and roads can also be hurt by water from the sea. Of all our memories, the most important are the"self-defining memories". They are remembered most clearly, and they are the ones that help us build our overall sense of self. By recognizing our self-defining memories, we can have a deeper understanding of ourselves. But how can we recognize them The easiest way is to think about the events in your life. However, as we get older and experience more events,self-defining memories are always changing.
Interestingly, older adults always find ways to change memories of troubling events into positive stories. In this way, they can make peace with their past adversities. However, for younger adults, troubling events may cause them to experience more pain when they think of them.
