Long ago, people usually used hand-held fans to cool off. The history of the Chinese fan dates back to over 3, 000 years, around the Shang Dynasty.Feather(羽毛) fans, made of bird feathers, were the earliest form of fans in the world. Zhuge Liang always held one, and then others all followed him,for the fan was considered as a symbol of wisdom.
During the Western Han Dynasty, fans became popular among common people. That's because cheaper fans appeared. Around the same time, anew kind of fan was also introduced. They were round like the moon, so they were also called "round fans", or tuanshan. Tuanshan was usually made of fine white silk. Its main "face"was often hand-painted with calligraphy(书法). So it was expensive and only wealthy families could afford it.
Folding fans which were also called zheshan appeared in the Northern Song Dynasty. They were mainly made of paper, silk or cloth. They were more convenient to take and keep than round fans.So they gradually took the place of round fans.Folding fans formed an empty space for artists to create works on. Brant was very calm at that time.He remembered what he had learned in physics class about the balance of forces, and began to look closely at the tent's supports. He thought it was time to show his parents what he had learned. However, it took him a lot of effort to fix the first bracket(支架).
Brant then changed the height and positions of the other brackets one by one, using the rule of balance of forces. He pulled carefully at times and pressed hard at others. After trying many times, he found the best position for each bracket, and the tent was finally set up. It stood strongly on the ground, as if it were a strong house.

Passage 11
We can see circles, squares and triangles(=角形) everywhere in our daily life. Have you thought about their meanings in films Actually, different shapes can show different personalities(性格) of characters.
The round shape reminds us of nature things, like the sun, flowers and so on. We can also connect circles with beautiful eyes, babies' round faces... All these things make us feel happy and warm. This is why the bodies of so many cartoon characters-heroes, kids, good people are round.
Squares show things that are unnatural, or things that are boring or old-fashioned. In the film Up, Carl Fredricksen who was an elderly man has a square face and wears square glasses, while Russell, an 8-year-old boy with a round face, always wears round medals. These shapes show the characters' personalities. Carl is stubborn(执拗的)and lonely, while Russell is lovely and full of energy.
The angriest shape ① people often use in art works is the triangle. Every kid who draws a monster(怪物) with sharp teeth draws several triangles. That's because the shape represents fear and doubt in some way. Look at the bad people in cartoons- they are all drawn with plenty of points and triangles, like Shengongbao in The Legend of Nezha. And triangles are stable and don't easily fall down. In films, this feature makes bad people difficult to deal with.
②Not only in cartoons, but also in other kinds of films, different shapes are used for the same purpose. So, next time you see a film, try to find the hidden shapes and you will know what the characters are like.
