Many places have a public library. A 1 living in the area can use it. With a library card, people can borrow books and k 2 them for several weeks. It does not cost any m 3 to get a library card at most public libraries.
Many colleges and universities have large academic (学术) libraries. Scientists, scholars or students use them m 4 for doing research (研究), like studying the solar system or how earthquakes happen. These libraries do not have the s 5 types of books you would find in a public library. For example, they usually do not have novels or cooking books.
Special libraries are usually small. They usually hold books on a particular subject or even a special kind of book. Some keep just old books.
Librarians (图书管理员) help people find books and i 6 . They can teach people h 7 to find books and use the library. Just as a writer said, “Google can bring you back 100 000 answers. A librarian can bring you back the right one.”
Now, technology and the Internet are changing people’s r 8 habits and also their relationship with libraries. But what hasn’t changed is people’s l 9 for books. In some countries, adults still read as m 10 as before and libraries are still playing an important role in their communities.
Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words (在短文的空格内填入适当的词,使其内容通顺,每空格限填一词,首字母已给)
We come across abbreviations (缩写形式) every day, in all kinds of places. In the US, which of course is an abbreviation for the United States, people call the space agency NASA, rather than the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Many abbreviations are so common that we say them without thinking. Some people feel they make talking, reading, and writing c 11 , but others find shortened words or phrases confusing. What do you think Should we use abbreviations
Yes-they simplify life
Language is changing all the time and has been ever since humans began to speak. If it didn’t d 12 , we would still be saying “thine” instead of “yours” and “thou” instead of “you”. Imagine that! Some abbreviations, like “GIF” or “FBI,” are so common and well-known that it would sound s 13 to say them in full. Abbreviations can be used to make text and speech shorter, quicker, and simpler to understand. That’s u 14 if you’re in a hurry-for example, typing “BRB” is much faster than writing “I’ll be right back.” Abbreviations are also a kind of common language that can help people feel comfortable and familiar with each other.
No-they’re confusing
Proper use of abbreviations can speed up your reading or writing. However, if abbreviations aren’t used c 15 they can slow you down rather than speed things up. For example, if a word or phrase isn’t written out in full the first time it’s used in a piece of writing, the r 16 may have to waste time looking it up in a dictionary. Abbreviations can also cause misunderstandings or make people feel left out or embarrassed. If you don’t know what an abbreviation m 17 , it’s awkward (令人尴尬的) to ask another person to explain it. And sure, language changes over time, but some changes aren’t for the better. Saying “ty” just isn’t as polite as saying “thank you,” is it It just sounds lazy and, frankly, insincere.
Is Bottled Water Better
Water makes up about sixty percent of your body weight. As a teenager, you should drink 1.4 to 1.9 liters of water every day. Most of us get our water at a low price from our taps. But some people prefer bottled water, even though it costs more.
Bottled water first a 18 in the United States in the 1760s. A company called Jackson’s Spa bottled and sold mineral water. It said that the water could “produce good effects on people’s bodies”. Since then, bottled water has become more and more popular worldwide. People drink about 10 percent more bottled water every year. In 2023, for the first time, Americans drank more bottled water than soda.
Why has bottled water become so popular Well, this may have something to do with people’s worries about the purity of tap water. According to one survey, 63% of Americans are worried a lot about the s 19 of their drinking water.
However, research suggests such worries are u 20 . For most families, bottled water is not better than tap water. In fact, almost half of all bottled water comes from the tap. (The company may further process it, though.) And when it comes to taste, most of us cannot tell the d 21 . Students at Boston University once conducted a blind taste test. Only 20% of the taste testers were able to correctly pick out which one the tap water had been from among the samples.
Making bottled water, however, r 22 a lot of resources. Plastic bottles are usually used only o 23 before being thrown away. Besides, more water goes into the making of a bottle of water than simply its contents. One study found that on average, companies use 1.39 liters of water to make one liter of bottled water.
Do you prefer bottled water to tap water It’s time to change your m 24 ! Bottled water is more expensive. However, it isn’t much better than the water you get from your kitchen tap.

When people ask what caused my i 79 in cooking, I have a lot to say. My love for cooking was something that happened very early in my life, slowly but surely. I don’t think I work as a cook. I think I enjoy being a cook.
My mother and father were very h 80 to my development as a cook. When I was a child, my mom always rode me to the bakery and picked up the bread fresh from the oven. And my dad would take me to buy fruit and fish. We enjoyed the time in the k 81 because cooking was a good moment of being together.
I was 15 or 16 when I began working in the summer in a seafood restaurant up north of Barcelona. For some reason, the other chef had left. And when there’s nobody around, what do you do You can give up, but then nothing happens. Or you can say, “Let me t 82 solving it.”
I love science fiction and always imagine cooking on a faraway planet. Nobody thought that would happen. But then I got a chance to work with Axiom Space to p 83 food for the astronauts on Axiom Space’s Ax-1 mission. Although there were many difficulties and I needed to make lots of changes to make the food good for space travel, I did not give up, because I feel it i 84 for me to send my dishes to the space. To my joy, I made it.
And I believe this is a big lesson for all of us: It doesn’t matter how impossible the d 85 is. If you work hard, nothing is impossible.
Yours sincerely,
