【中考专项训练】必考系列:阅读单选(5题)-2025年中考英语
On May 2, 2023, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) called on its 11,500 members to begin a strike in Hollywood, California, and New York City in the US. It was the first writers’ strike in more than 15 years and made many movie and TV projects stop.
One big problem was the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The WGA wanted Hollywood’s studios and producers to limit (限制) the use of AI on creative projects. They wanted AI not to be allowed to write or rewrite material or be used as source material.
Creative AI programs like Chat GPT can now create human-like written works and panies could use these programs instead of people to create scripts (剧本) for movies and TV shows in the future. The WGA was worried that AI could be used to create scripts based on writer’s previous works.
Another problem was pay. Warren Leight, an executive producer (执行制作人), said, “What AI could do is put out a garbled (混乱不清的) piece of work … instead of hiring you to do a first draft, studios hire you to do a second draft, which pays less.” This made writers want to “nip that in the bud”.
AI is already being used widely in other parts of the entertainment industry, such as deaging actors in post-production, said Fortune magazine. Even the WGA and others are open to using AI “less as a creator and more as a tool”, similar to how writers might refer to research material for their work, said tech news website Gizmodo. Still, although AI is not set to replace human writers just yet, the chance could be there in the future.

When I told my mom I was going without my cellphone for a week, she was more nervous than I was. “What are you going to do if you get kidnapped (绑架) ” she asked me. I told her I would be careful.
My mom likes the cellphone because I call her after I’m done with tutoring or meetings so she knows when and where to pick me up. Before I left for summer school on a Monday, my mom and I agreed on where she would pick me up. I asked her to try her best to come on time because she’s usually late. I left my phone in her car. To pass the time I brought some summer reading novels. I also wore my old watch so I wouldn’t have to ask people for the time.
For the first two days, she was usually around five to ten minutes late to pick me up. On the third day, it was cloudy, windy and cold and of course my mom was late. I stood shivering (发抖) and waiting for 20 minutes, then I got a cold. I wondered if she got into a car accident. When she arrived, I ran to the car for warmth. On the fourth day,I waited for about 15 minutes for my mom.

Many cultures have stories of talking trees that give advice as well as warnings to people. Alexander the Great and Marco Polo were said to have visited such a tree in India. And in some modern stories, such as the film Avatar, trees can communicate with animals and people. With our long believing that talking plants are unreal, new research has found something amazing: It turns out that plants can really communicate.
It has been known that plants use chemicals (化学物) to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant, say a bean plant, gets attacked (袭击) by insects. The plant gives off chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help, “I’m being attacked!” When another bean plant feels the chemicals from its poor neighbor, it starts to give off its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract (吸引) insects—the wasps (黄蜂)! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the bean plant. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow crops in a more scientific way.
More surprisingly, plants also use sounds to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chili plants do this. They also “listen” to the noises from other plants. A chili plant can tell if a neighboring plant is helpful, or unfriendly. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system “wood wide web”. It is in some ways like the Internet we use. This wood wide web is linked underground by fungi (真菌). Using this wood wide web, ★ . However, it may lead to bad effects. Just like our Internet, this wood wide web has its own version of “cybercrime (网络犯罪)”. Plants can steal food from each other, or spread something harmful to attack other plants.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves in the near future. Let’s wait and see.

Li Cuili, a farmer from a village in Henan Province, was thought to be a strange woman when she decided to open a library at her store, providing books for villagers to read for free in 2008.
That idea first came from a mother’s love for her child. That year, she watched a show in her village with her son. To her surprise, the show was awful for children. Feeling worried that children would grow up in such an environment, she decided to change the situation and began to offer books to villagers. Starting with just 200 books, she placed them on the store shelves, waiting for the readers.
At the very beginning, no villager came forward. Li decided to interest children first. She offered candies to children who came to read, borrow books and write book reviews. We’ve been told by parents and teachers since we were kids that “It’s good to share.” Psychologists (心理学家) have published many papers stating that sharing helps build good social connecting. Today, the action of sharing takes on more meaning. Technology has turned “sharing” into a new economic (经济的) model. By sharing cars, homes, or even pets, people save and make money, creating fresh ways of living.
The sharing economy meets people’s need for affordable yet quality services. Whether it’s an online shop where we can get designer clothes at good prices or rent (出租) out our flats for a couple of days, it’s out there. Whether we’re a lender or a borrower, everyone makes or saves money. We also make connections and sometimes even make new friends. What’s more, sharing encourages us to reuse things, through which we can cut down on waste.
But the sharing economy is not without its problems as it’s developing fast. Some companies are taking unfair advantage of this situation to increase their share of the market. In addition, the sharing economy is open to misuse (滥用) of trust. Some people have experienced loss of things while renting out their homes. Finally, personal data (数据), the heart of the sharing economy, is not yet safe. Sharing websites collect personal information about almost every part of our lives, and the technology to stop such information from being stolen still needs improvement.
Even though, what is in no doubt is that the sharing economy is increasingly connected to our daily lives. It is growing at such a speed that we can only imagine what it will include in the future. (One day, Gulliver was caught in a storm and his ship hit a rock, then damaged. He was washed to the beach. When he woke up, he found himself in Lilliput and a lot of tiny people were around him.)
The Emperor spoke in a low voice but I could hear all the words clearly. His Majesty and I often spoke to each other but neither of us understood a single word. I tried words from many languages. No one could understand me, not even the cleverest of the Emperor’s followers.
After about two hours the Emperor left. His wife, children and their servants went also. There were strong guards around me. This was to stop the crowd of people from hurting me.
An officer told the guards to hold six men who made me angry. These men were given to me and I had to choose their punishment. I put five of them in my pocket. Then I pretended (假装) to eat the sixth man.
The poor man screamed terribly. The guards were worried when they saw my knife in my hand. I only cut the rope round his hands. Then I put him on his feet and let him go. I lifted the other five men out of my pocket and put them gently on the ground too.
The people and the soldiers were very pleased with my great kindness. They told the Emperor about it immediately. Emperor ordered his men to make a bed for me and they had to join six hundred of their little beds together to make one bed for me.
At the same time the Emperor asked all his advisers for their advice on how to deal with me. They were very worried. If they set me free, I might be dangerous. I was eating so much food that soon all the people would be hungry. The farmers could not grow enough food to feed all of us.
The wise men thought that they should kill me. But they would not be able to bury (埋葬) me. My dead body would smell. This might cause much illness all over the country.
