Four Must-see Night Sky Events in 2025
In the upcoming year, stargazers can anticipate a range of heavenly wonders to get excited for.
Saturn and Venus joint
On January 18, two neighboring worlds of Venus and Saturn will appear less than half a degree apart in the sky, about 30 — 45 minutes after sunset. Venus, the brighter, will shine a brilliant red, with Saturn next to it appearing more golden. Though you will be able to see both with the naked eye, binoculars will enhance the view.
Lunar eclipse (月食) and blood moon
During a lunar eclipse, one in 2022 seen in Portugal, light casts a burning glow on the moon’s surface in the early morning hours of March 14, lasting from 2:26 a.m. to 3:31 a.m. Stargazers can get a great view of the “blood moon” across the Americas, weatherpermitting.
Partial solar eclipse
The sky shifting from deep blue at the top, to burning reds on the horizon, the solar eclipse coming March 29, 2025, will have the sun appear as a new moon. Visible across large parts of North America, Europe, and Asia, the event begins at 4:50 a.m. At 6:47 a.m., the largest part of the sun will be shaded by the moon.
Moon and Mercury meet up
Mercury is tricky to spot because of its closeness to the sun. On June 26, the planet will be easier to glimpse as it appears next to our moon around 20 — 30 minutes before the twilight fades. Mercury will shine as a faint red of light to the naked eye.
21. Which event takes the longest time
A. Saturn and Venus joint. B. Lunar eclipse and blood moon.
C. Partial solar eclipse. D. Moon and Mercury meet up.
22. Which country best suits blood moon observation
A. China. B. Canada. C. Russia. D. Portugal.
23. What do the four events have in common
A. They can be viewed with naked eyes. B. They fall in the same month.
C. They all emerge for the first time. D. They have red lights involved.

Many of us have heard of Alex Honnold, who made history in 2018 when he became the first man to climb EI Capitan without ropes or safety equipment. But his mother, Dierdre Wolownick, just became the oldest woman to conquer the famous peak: she reached the top on September 23 — the morning of her 70th birthday.
Dierdre, the writer and language teacher, decided to take up climbing as a means to connect more with her son. In 2008, accompanied by her son Alex, she visited a climbing gym and completed 12 routes that first day with his help, but it was months before she worked up the courage to return and practice on her own.
Dierdre became committed to the sport, and began to meet friends and sharpen her skills. She scaled (登上) parts of Half Dome and Cathedral peak at a time when many people at her age are thinking about retirement and slowing down. The writer would go on to publish a book about her climbing experiences with Alex called The Sharp End of Life: A Mother’s Story.
“As a mother, I am impressed by this role exchange process. Parents and children often wind up changing roles in life as they get older,” she writes in her book. “But never, I thought, is that transformation as obvious as when they climb together.”
On September 23, Dierdre and her friends set out in the dark, at 6 am. The route is steep (陡峭的) enough to require all-fours, grabbing rocks and trees and whatever else will hold the weight. Yet despite all difficulties the team made it to the top. “It was really inspiring to watch her and then to have her on top with all of us,” said one of Dierdre’s friends. “There was a special look on everyone’s face. We knew where we were. We knew how amazing the moment truly was.”
24. Why did Dierdre start climbing mountains
A. To know her son better. B. To celebrate her birthday.
C. To seek writing inspiration. D. To set an example for the old.
25. Which of the following best describes Dierdre
A. Patient B. Courageous. C. Intelligent. D. Generous.
26. What does the last paragraph tell about Dierdre’s climbing journey
A. It was worth the efforts. B. It took days to complete.
C. It was arranged on her own. D. It required special equipment.
27. What may be a suitable title for the text
A. Mountain climbing benefits health B. Mother goes beyond her son’s wish
C. Climb together, bond closer D. Slow down, better your life
C
One aspect of the clean-energy change will happen inside buildings. Many homes and businesses burn natural gas for heating and cooking. Natural gas gives out greenhouse gases as well as other pollutants that can harm health. Gas appliances (家用电器) can be replaced by electric versions and tap into clean electricity.
Panama Bartholomy is the director of the Building Decarbonization Coalition. His group, based in Petaluma, Calif., focuses on limiting gas emissions indoors. “We assume the electric grid (输电网) is getting cleaner over time, which it is. So, we want more and more of our heating to come from electricity.”
It’s much easier to make these types of transitions when governments recommend them, says Beth Miller. She is an ecologist and consultant with Good Company. Based in Eugene, Ore., it helps companies and communities reduce their carbon footprint. Some states are already taking steps to make these changes. On September 22, for instance, California decided it would ban the sale of gas-fired space heaters and water heaters by 2030.
After homes and businesses make the switch to electric alternatives, they will be more comfortable, says Bartholomy. They will be safer and cleaner, too, he adds. Instead of a gas furnace(燃气炉), an electric heat pump could both heat and cool a home. Gas heaters and stoves won’t be pumping pollution into a home’s air. And cooks will have even more control on a modern electric cooker than on a gas stove says Bartholomy.
Getting natural gas out of your home is probably the largest positive impact you can have for the planet, Bartholomy says. “We all need to fight for a livable climate. There is no way to meet our climate goals while still burning gas in buildings. For a livable future, we must take measures to stop burning natural gas, though we know we have a long way to go.” And the bonus: It now looks like doing that should also save people a lot of money.
28. What is the clean energy change
A. Using natural gas for heating. B. Using natural gas to boil water.
C. Using electric cookers at home. D. Using electric lights inside buildings.
29. What does the underlined word “transitions” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. PromisesB. Plans. C. Changes. D. Decisions.
30. What can we learn from Paragraph 4
A. Homes will be safer. B. Gas stoves will be replaced soon.
C. Homes’ air will have more pollutants. D. Cooks prefer to use traditional cookers.
31. What is the best title of the text
A. Clean-energy Change B. Electricity Use
C. Make Use of Natural Gas D. Save Your Money at Home
D
In Portugal, near the town of Alqueva, lies Europe’s largest artificial lake, home to an innovative floating solar- power plant developed by EDP, a leading renewable energy company. Despite initial skepticism about the high costs and potential issues of floating solar technology, this project represents the sector’s maturation and readiness for expansion.
In this first phase of the project at Alqueva, engineers have stationed some 12,000 PV modules(光伏组件)on floating platforms made from partially recycled plastic and locally sourced soft wood. These are connected to an energy-storage system combining batteries and are integrated with the hydroelectric dam’s power station.
Floating solar projects do face plenty of challenges. The kit has to be water-, wave-, wind-and storm-resistant, which adds complexity and cost. The fish in lakes attract plenty of birds, whose droppings can block the sun. To deal with this, engineers for the project at Alqueva have developed remote-controlled cleaning robots and are working on autonomous ones.
Yet floating solar projects also enjoy several advantages. When located at existing hydroelectric dams they do not require any additional land and can be connected to the grid(电网)without the multi-year wait common for solar projects. The cooling effect of being on water boosts the efficiency of the modules, with studies suggesting gains of between 5%and 15%over land-based PV, while the shade they produce slows the water loss of the lake.
EDP views floating solar as a cornerstone of its renewable energy strategy. The initial 5 megawatts(MW, 兆瓦) capacity at Alqueva may seem modest, but it’s just the beginning. The company is planning a second phase, which will see an additional 70MW capacity by 2025.According to Wood Mackenzie, a leading consultancy, floating solar technology could deliver up to 60,000MW of renewable energy globally by 2031. “This may pale in comparison to the 1,600,000MW of solar capacity installed as of last year. But every bit counts,” he added.
32.Which of the following best describes the EDP project
A. It went unquestioned. B. It can be costly but eco-friendly.
C. It has already expanded. D. It is separated from the power station.
33.What can be learned about floating solar projects
A. Engineers have developed auto cleaning robots.
B. Floating solar projects demand less time for grid access.
C. Land-based PV modules are more productive than floating ones.
D. The PV modules decrease the water level of the lake.
34.What might EDP agree with according to the last paragraph
A. The project at Alqueva is an instant success.
B. By 2025 the project at Alqueva will provide 70MW capacity.
C. The project will generate the majority of global renewable power.
D. The floating solar technology has a promising future.
35.What is a suitable title for the text
A. Floating Solar Ready to Shine
B. Solar Power or Hydro Power
C. The Dawn of Renewable Energy
D. A Glimpse into Global Floating Solar Farms

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Left-handed people make up around 12% of the global population. One really interesting fact that I picked up was from a scientist who believed that left-handed people tended to be more independent as a result of having to adapt to a world that is largely built for right-handed individuals. 36 !
More likely to have allergies and sleep disorders
A study found that left-handed people were 11 times more likely to suffer from allergies than right-handed folk. 37
Left-handed people use the right side of the brain the most
38 , meaning that the right side controls the left side of the body and the other way around. Hence there is a well-known saying “only left-handed people are in their right minds”. The right-hand side of the brain is thought to control the left side of the body and tasks to do with the arts and creativity.
Are left-handed people smarter
39 ! One 2007 study “Effect of handedness on intelligence level of students” shows that lefties are more likely to have higher IQ. However, another 2010 study “The relationship between hand preference, hand performance, and general cognitive ability” suggests the exact opposite!
40
Experiments showed that when given two tasks to complete simultaneously, lefties performed best. This is because right-handed people tend to solve problems by breaking them down into parts and analyzing each piece one at a time. While left-handed people tend to look at the problem as a whole and use pattern-matching to try and solve it.
A. Better at multi-tasking
B. Smarter than the right-handed
C. As we know, the brain is cross-wired
D. This one varies depending on how dated your source is
E. Here are a few more fascinating left-handed people facts
F. Mixed-handed children are more likely to experience language issues

【原文】
About 10 years ago, some friends and I went to a small restaurant for dinner in China. We finished the delicious food, asked for the check and left some money on the table. It came to 180 yuan. We left two 100-yuan notes, thanked the waiter and left. As we were an entire block away, we heard someone shouting behind us, waving a piece of paper. We quickly realized it was the waiter from the restaurant. He didn’t speak English; we didn’t speak Chinese. But he ran an entire block just to give us the 20 yuan, which was really surprising but moving. Since we were struggling to find the entrance to the subway then, we decided to turn to him for help. He nodded and indicated we could follow him. We walked about 3 blocks. Then he pointed to the entrance, and walked away. I couldn’t believe that he should take so much trouble to help some strangers. Similar experiences repeated themselves across China. The friendliness of the people, and their eagerness to help are wonderful. I don’t know if that is classified as “culture shock” but it has made me think about my own country where I rarely see such kind actions. It also inspires me to act that way no matter where I am.
