“I know I can't change a person or the choices they make. However, having the capacity to make a difference in the life of not one, but many, is something I desire to,” says 19-year-oldAmatulah Vahanwalla.
Evidently, she walks the talk. It all began in November 2015, when Amatulah and Niharika Jaju, Class XI students, were discussing their community service project. Niharika told Amatulah about her first hair donation experience at the age of nine and that she was eager to do it again. This set off a chain of brainstorming sessions, and they came up with a hair donation drive— Hair for Happiness (HH). The proceeds(收益) of the campaign go to the Little Prince Trust, a British non-profit that helps create wigs made from real hair for children suffering from hair loss due to illness. “Painstaking research goes into finding physical treatments for serious diseases. However, it makes me sad that people who are suffering are treated like numbers on a graph, nothing more and nothing less,” says Niharika.
Motivation for helping a child regain self-esteem helped them overcome obstacles. Initially, all the hair donation organizations only accepted longer strands (12 to 13 inches) of untreated hair. “But the Little Princess Trust (LPT) had a minimum requirement of seven inches of hair to make wigs and donate wigs,” says Amatulah. This opened up a bigger door for cooperation.
However, another struggle was to find enough donors. Through promotions in schools, departments, as well as salons like Cracle, and reaching out to volunteer hairstylists, they eventually made it. Since the initiative was consistent with their social responsibility goals, some companies provided funds by covering the cost for larger drives.
“I think the moment I finally realized the significance of our creation was when we crossed100 donations,” says Niharika. This, when they assumed it would take a “miracle to reach even 10donations”.
24. What inspired the creation of HH
A. Amatulah's desire to change the world.
B. Niharika's hair donation experience.
C. The low self-esteem of sick children.
D. The difficulties of treating rare diseases.
25. What upset Niharika according to paragraph 2
A. The lack of hair donors.
B. The ignorance of human-centered care.
C. The imbalance of medical resources.
D. The overemphasis on medical treatment.
26. What fostered the partnership between HH and LPT
A. LPT's less demanding conditions.
B. LPT's established reputation.
C. HH's pressing need for hair.
D. HH's constant innovation.
27. Why did some companies sponsor the project
A. To enhance corporate image.
B. To strengthen bonds between schools.
C. To spread awareness of charity.
D. To fulfill their mission of public welfare.

This new school year, I wanted my love for my students to be super adaptive, a little bit blind, and similar to the kind of love a mother gives to her children. I wanted a love that could put up with unappealing personalities and behaviors, which had the ability to lead to my “I wish he or she was not in my class” response, with humor, peace, and curiosity.
I decided to go toward the most difficult students with additional kindness, rather than backing away in frustration when my former attempts to change them failed. The changes in my education were faint yet definite. I had always taken students aside when they made poor decisions. But my new plan asked questions that were free of scolding or shame, and more gentle and sincere. Are you feeling all right Is something bothering you What happened last night These questions rarely led to any big “ah ha” moments, but I treated each repeated conversation with patience.
Although my love plan was designed to improve my students’ school experience, it completely improved mine as well. It worked magic on my relationships with students and energised me for the school day. My difficult students represented puzzles to solve and relationships to improve, not frightening trouble that would exhaust my joy. Letting go of the assumption that their behaviors must be purposive choices, I was able to avoid feelings of resentment(怨恨) when my students made mistakes. I felt more peaceful and less angry.
Loving my students also got easier as the year progressed. I wondered whether my approach would work in the long run. Now it turns out that love brings love.
28. What was the author's desire in the new term
A. To seek students' shining points.
B. To respect students’ suggestions.
C. To be more tolerant of students.
D. To show an interest in teaching.
29. What was the change in the author's education
A. She cared about students' sleep quality.
B. She took badly-behaved students aside.
C. She made efforts to lift students' spirits.
D. She offered students chances to explain.
30. What was the impact of the author's love plan
A. It enabled her to find self-worth.
B. It made her feel more composed.
C. It guided students to be honest.
D. It gave students more spare time.
31. What can we learn from the author's experience
A. One action can bring two gains.
B. There is some light in the dark.
C. All the worries are for nothing.
D. Facts speak louder than words.

People's tendency to follow trends, especially on social media —— even when they look silly or take risks doing so —— is definitely a common phenomenon. What does psychology say about trend following— and is there a way to break free from the desire to follow the newest craze
According to Psychologist Pamela B. Rutledge, following trends isn't a sign of character weakness or mental instability. Rather, it is an entirely natural behavior embedded in humanity's fundamental need to belong to a social group and establish connections with others.
Historically, following trends was crucial for our survival. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence that early humans worked together to transport stone tools over long distances about two million years ago in what is now Kenya —— cooperation that allowed them to survive in a severe environment. And though following a trend on social media isn't exactly as important as outrunning a saber-toothed tiger, human evolution has programmed our brains to be receptive to social signals.
Another contributing factor the social cognition(认知)— the processes that determine what we notice and how we respond to others— largely takes place in the parts of the brain that oversee sight, pattern recognition, decision-making, empathy, and similar functions. “Thanks to our humans’ complex cognitive systems, our brains are really good at identifying patterns and stimulating behavior that communicates our social status. As a result, you can use almost anything to signal your membership or affiliation with a social group. Giving off the right social signals lets others know which group you belong to or want to engage with — and those signals are monitored and interpreted by others. Referred to as identity signaling, these behaviors can range from putting a bumper sticker on a car to selecting a brand of clothing,” said Rutledge.
Almost everyone follows trends in social groups, without exception. However, tweens, teenagers, and young adults are especially likely to follow trends, including risky ones, due to their heightened desire for acceptance and belonging among peers. Therefore, it's of great significance to guide them during their journey towards maturity.
32. What does Rutledge think of following trends
A. Changeable. B. Reasonable. C. Odd. D. Risky.
33. Why did early humans prefer to follow trends
A. To remove mental weakness. B. To show their social status.
C. To live through difficulties. D. To expand their population.
34. What is the hidden meaning of identity signaling
A. Good taste in fashion. B. Blind pursuit of novelty.
C. A true reflection of personality. D. A keen thirst for belonging.
35. What will the follow-up paragraph most probably talk about
A. Tips on embracing trends sensibly. B. Insights into forthcoming trends.
C. Parental guidance in kids' future jobs. D. Psychology behind trend adoption.

I have six different apple trees in my small forest garden. This means there are a lot of apples to harvest each year. 36 Over time, I developed strategies to handle it smoothly. Here's my advice for you.
Understand what apples you are growing. Apples ripen (成熟) at different times. 37 This will vary a little with conditions from year to year. However, having a rough idea of when you will be harvesting allows you to prepare.
38 Some pieces of equipment are crucial for the apple harvest. A kitchen juicer isn't enough; invest in a metal hand-turned macerator(浸渍机) and a wood-and-metal fruit press. These make processing easier. Also, have a suitable storage area ready, along with canning jars(罐子) and other necessities.
Consider investing in a fruit picker. It is a picker with an extendable pole that can reach apples even from the very top of the trees. 39
One final tip that I would like to share is very simple: Many hands make light work. If you have a lot of apples to harvest, consider inviting some family or friends and have an apple picking party— then share your harvest, of course. 40 It also supports the goals of sustainable living.
These tips may sound basic, but they ensure a smoother apple harvest and prevent waste of your beautiful, delicious apples. With the right preparations, apple harvesting becomes a manageable and enjoyable task each year.
A. Now with it, apple harvesting isn't boring. B. Prepare storage areas and required equipment. C. So the apple picking will become quicker and easier. D. It took me a while to recognize different apple varieties. E. Initially, the apple harvest was exciting but challenging. F. This cooperative approach makes the task more efficient. G. Therefore, it is helpful to know when your harvest should take place.

A funny thing happened to Derby when he was on the way to work. As he approached the First National Bank this morning, he saw a young man trying to start his car. The young man tried again and again but still failed to get the car moving.
“It looks like you've got a problem,” Derby said.
“I'm afraid so,” replied the young man, who looked very worried. “I'm in a big hurry, but I can't start my car!”
“Is there anything I can do to help ” Derby asked.
The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you're sure it wouldn't be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases to the taxi stop. I have called for a taxi and it is coming.”
“No trouble at all. I'd be glad to help,” Derby said.
The young man took the suitcases from the back seat and handed them to Derby. After Derby walked about 100 meters, the air was suddenly filled with gun shots and sharp sounds from police cars across the streets.
“Bank robbery(抢劫)!” one bystander shouted and the crowds on the street started running in all directions.
Still carrying the suitcases, Derby joined the crowds and started running, too. Distracted(分心) by the gun shots, Derby ran right into a young woman in front of him. She turned around and looked at the suitcases with a very strange expression on the face.
“Why is she looking at me like that ” Derby wondered. “The suitcases! She thinks I'm one of the thieves!”
His doubt was confirmed immediately when the woman started yelling, “The thief! The thief!”
Suddenly, the crowds turned toward Derby. Feeling threatened, Derby ran even faster. To make things worse, the young man also shouted, “Stop! Stop!”
“Why is he shouting Are these suitcases full of the stolen money ” Derby thought. “I would be killed by the crowds if I were caught now while the young man refused to tell the truth!”

第一节
Good morning, everyone!
Today, I’d like to talk about small acts of kindness. Small acts of kindness are like tiny seeds with transformative power, which seem insignificant but can grow into something amazing. A simple smile, a helping hand or a kind word can not only brighten someone's day but also create a ripple effect of positivity.
I suggest we start with small steps: First, offer to carry groceries for an elderly neighbor before they ask, turning routine into warmth. Second, replace casual “hi” with “I admire your patience today”—such mindful phrases plant confidence. Third, pick up litter not just for cleanliness, but as a silent vow to care for our shared space. Let’s make kindness a habit. Together, we can create a warmer, more caring world. Let your small acts of kindness inspire others to do the same.
Thank you!
参考范文如下:
Having considered all the possibilities, Derby decided to run to the police station. Clutching the suitcases tightly, he made his way through the panicked crowd, ignoring the shouts behind him. His heart pounded as he spotted the blue lights of the police station ahead. "Help! I’m being mistaken for a robber!" he gasped, bursting through the door. A policeman quickly stopped him, but Derby hurriedly explained the strange encounter, insisting the suitcases held the key to clearing his name. The police, skeptical but alert, accompanied him and the suitcases to an inner room, preparing for the worst.
But after the policemen unlocked the suitcases, they appeared very confused. Inside were dozens of stuffed toys, each wearing tiny police badges. The young man, who had been chased down by bystanders, finally arrived, breathlessly. "I’m a toy designer," he explained urgently. "I was rushing to a charity event for kids in the hospital. The car broke down, and I didn’t want to be late!" The woman who had yelled "thief" embarrassedly admitted she’d seen the word "bank" on one suitcase (it was part of a toy bank design) and overreacted. Derby, relieved, laughed awkwardly. "Next time, I’ll think twice before helping with suitcases," he joked. The police apologized, and the crowd scattered, leaving Derby with a story to share at the office—one that proved even a chaotic misunderstanding could end with a touch of humor.

W: A heart-broken image captures a young polar bear sleeping on the melting pieces of a tiny iceberg. British part-time photographer Nima Sarikhani captured the scene in Svalbard, which sits deep inside the Arctic Circle, around 500 miles from the North Pole. The image was crowned the winner of this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award. After three days of desperately searching for polar bears through thick fog, Sarikhani finally spotted two polar bears — a younger male and an older male. Just before midnight, as the ship got close to the bears, the younger one climbed onto a small iceberg and carved out a bed with his paws before falling asleep. Sarikhani said this photograph has caused strong emotions in many of those who have seen it. An estimated 26,000 polar bears remain in the wild, and they are at the risk of dying out as rising temperatures melt away the sea ice these animals depend on. Director of the Natural History Museum said, “The heartbreaking image allows us to see the beauty and fragility of our planet. His thought-provoking image is a striking reminder of the essential bond between an animal and its habitat and serves as a visual representation of the harmful impacts of climate warming and habitat loss.” Sarikhani said he hoped his photograph could inspire hope. He added there is still time to fix the mess we have caused.
