During the Warring States Period (战国时期 475—221BC), King Zhao of Yan wanted to get talented people to
work for him. When he asked a knowledgeable person named Guo Wei for advice, Guo told him the story of
buying horse bones (骨头) with 500 pieces of gold.
There was once a king who wanted a special kind of horse. This horse could run 1,000 li a day. It was called
swift horse (千里马). The king sent many people to find these horses and buy them for him. After three years,
nobody found him such a horse.
One day, a smart person volunteered to help. Three months later, he heard about a swift horse. He hurried to
find it, but the horse had already died. Still, he bought the bones of the horse with 500 pieces of gold.
The king was very angry. “What I want is a live horse, not the bones of a dead horse!”
The man said calmly (冷静地), “Imagine this. You’d like to pay a high price for a dead horse, let alone (更别
提) a live one. This shows people you truly wish to buy the horses. Just wait and the horses you want will come
very soon.”
That was true. In less than a year, many owners of the swift horses brought their horses to the king.
Guo told the king that he could see himself as the bones of the horse. “If I am valued (被重视), more talented
people will be ready to serve the state (国家),” he said. The king built houses for Guo and looked on him as a

On January 20, 2025, a Chinese company (公司) named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This
AI can do math problems, write computer codes (代码), and answer questions like the best AIs in the world. But it
costs much less money to build. The team used only $5.58 million (much cheaper than other AIs) and 2, 048
computer parts for two months. This proves that smart ideas are better than just spending a lot of money.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use, and people can even change it. On its first day, more than 19, 000 computer
experts around the world started using it. A German (德国的) scientist said, “Using DeepSeek-R1 for experiments
(实验) costs only $10, but other AIs need $300.” Even a top scientist from Meta (a big U.S. company) said, “This
free AI could change the world.”
U.S. companies are now worried. Meta plans to spend $65, 000, 000, 000 more on AI study. Experts say
China is becoming a leader in AI very fast. A report in Nature (a famous science magazine) called DeepSeek-Rl a
“big success”, showing that good ideas are more important than expensive tools.
A DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to help everyone, not just rich people.” With DeepSeek-R1, China
makes it clear that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.

More than two years ago, to stay safe, we had to give up many enjoyable things such as shaking hands and
hugging (拥抱). Many people felt lonely or sad without physical touch. But there is something they can safely put
their arms around and hold close: a tree.
Tree hugging may sound a little strange, but it’s not a new idea. Humans have turned to Mother Nature for
comfort for hundreds of years. In Japan, people have long practiced Shinrin-yoku. “Shinrin” means forest and
“yoku” is the Japanese word for bath. People have a bath in the forest. But no soap or water is needed for
Shinrin-yoku. All it needs is listening to the sounds and taking a breath.
Jimmy advised people to try tree hugging. Cathy recently visited the Apollonia National Park to hug a tree.
“We are not hugging many people these days,” she said. “Going out to nature, taking a deep breath and hugging a
tree are nice things to do.”
Iceland’s Forest Service made a similar decision. They advised everyone in the country to hug a tree for at
least five minutes every day. Park workers cleared paths (小道) in the woods so that visitors could keep a safe
