A
Surrounded by towering redwoods on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other,
the coastal city of Santa Cruz, some 70 miles south of San Francisco, is a great place for a young person to
experience nature. That’s where Xinning Zhang, assistant professor of geosciences and the Princeton
Environmental Institute, spent her childhood. “Growing up there, you just can’t help thinking and caring about the
environment,” she said. One of the environmental questions Zhang is exploring is why methane, a significant
greenhouse gas, is increasing in the atmosphere.
Most of us are aware that cows release methane, but wetlands are also a major source of the gas. Wetlands
host a community of microbes (微生物), including Archaea, which generate methane as a byproduct when they
consume and digest components of organic matter. These microbes grow in oxygen-free environments like wet
soils, which typically occur in the wetlands’ deeper levels. However, researchers have been surprised to find that
quite a lot of methane comes from the oxygen-rich peat (泥炭) and soil near the surface.
To explore this phenomenon, Zhang and her team analyzed peat samples collected from a wetland in the
Northeast U.S. One set of samples received oxygen treatment followed by incubation (培养) under oxygen-free
conditions. The other samples remained in an oxygen-free environment for the entire study period. Contrary to
expectations, the oxygen-treated peats produced a higher amount of methane than the peats maintained under
continuously oxygen-free conditions.
To find out why, the researchers analyzed all the microbes found in the peat samples. They found that
oxygen stimulated some microbes to break down harmful chemicals, which would otherwise threaten the entire
microbial community, including methane-producing Archaea. The result is the creation of far more methane than
expected.
Zhang’s work suggests that oxygen variability is an important control on wetland methane production. Her
team is also exploring further how oxygen variability for different lengths of time, and how different soil
chemistries influence microbial methane production.
1.What motivated Zhang to study environmental issues
A.Her childhood experiences. B.The adventure in nature.
C.Her educational background. D.The pressure from fellows.
2.Why did Zhang analyze microbes in the wetland soil
A.To examine the condition of surface soil.
B.To explore the impact of methane on microbes.
C.To study the role of oxygen in methane production.
D.To calculate the amount of methane released by cows.
3.How might the findings help reduce methane from wetlands
A.By changing soil structures. B.By introducing new microbes.
C.By blocking harmful chemicals. D.By adjusting soil oxygen levels.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.How Does Methane Affect Climate Change
B.What Drives Methane Production in Wetlands
C.What Is the Link Between Oxygen and Methane
D.How Do Wetlands Contribute to Microbial Diversity
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.D 4.B
That’s where Xinning Zhang, assistant professor of geosciences and the
Princeton Environmental Institute, spent her childhood. “Growing up there, you just can’t help thinking and caring
about the environment,” she said.(那就是地球科学和普林斯顿环境研究所助理教授张新宁度过童年的地方。
故选 A 项。
To explore this phenomenon, Zhang and her team analyzed peat samples collected
from a wetland in the Northeast U.S. One set of samples received oxygen treatment followed by incubation (培养)
under oxygen-free conditions. The other samples remained in an oxygen-free environment for the entire study
period. Contrary to expectations, the oxygen-treated peats produced a higher amount of methane than the peats
To find out why, the researchers analyzed all the microbes found in the peat samples. They
found that oxygen stimulated some microbes to break down harmful chemicals, which would otherwise threaten
the entire microbial community, including methane-producing Archaea.(为了找出原因,研究人员分析了泥炭样
Zhang’s work suggests that oxygen variability is an important control on
wetland methane production. Her team is also exploring further how oxygen variability for different lengths of
time, and how different soil chemistries influence microbial methane production.(张的研究表明,氧气的变化是
One of the environmental questions Zhang is exploring is why
methane, a significant greenhouse gas, is increasing in the atmosphere.(张新宁正在探索的环境问题之一是:甲
However, researchers have been
surprised to find that quite a lot of methane comes from the oxygen-rich peat ( 泥炭) and soil near the surface.(然

(2025·江苏盐城·三模)When Clark Hoefnagels’ grandmother was scammed (欺诈) out of $27,000 last
year, he felt it necessary to take action. As part of his efforts, Mr Hoefnagels ran the scam emails his grandmother
had received through popular AI chatbot ChatGPT. He was curious to see if it would recognize them as fraudulent
(欺骗的), and it immediately did so.
Then, an idea occurred to him, which has since grown into a business called Catch. It is an AI system that
has been trained to spot scam emails. Currently compatible (兼 容 的 ) with Google’s Gmail, Catch checks
incoming emails and marks any considered to be fraudulent, or potentially so.
Al tools such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini, can produce new content. Originally, this was only a text
reply in response to a question or conversation with them. However, they can now create photos and paintings,
voice content, or make documents. People from all walks of life and industries are increasingly using such AI to
improve their work. Unfortunately so are criminals.
A product called FraudGPT allows criminals to make content to scam others. More worrying is the use of
voice cloning, which can be used to convince (使相信) a relative that a loved one is in need of money.
The group that is most concerned about being scammed, Mr Hoefnagels says, are older people. Yet rather
than taking protective steps, he says that their fears are more often relieved by a very low-tech strategy — their
children telling them simply not to answer or reply to anything.
There are some pretty shocking facts about the growing problem of AI scams. Reports of AI tools being
used to try to fool banks’ systems increased by 84% in 2022. Given these increased global risks, you’d imagine
that Mr Hoefnagels’ Catch product would be popular with members of the public. Mr Hoefnagels says his next
step is to find a suitable partner with funding to support and bring it to the market.
1.Why is Clark Hoefnagels’ grandmother mentioned in the first paragraph
A.To discuss the huge increase in email scams.
B.To show the inspiration behind the Catch AI system.
C.To stress the Internet challenges faced by the elderly.
D.To prove the value of ChatGPT in recognizing scams.
2.What is the main concern with the development of AI tools
A.The risk of AI as a job replacement.
B.Over-dependence on AI for daily tasks.
C.AI-supported misbehaviour during tests.
D.The potential misuse of AI for e-crimes.
3.What can we learn about the elderly from paragraph 5
A.They are the main target of AI scams.
B.They tend to ignore their children’s advice.
C.They do little to defend themselves.
D.They feel less anxious after being comforted.
4.What can we expect of the Catch product in the future
A.It may get high profits.
B.It may reach the public soon.
C.It could perform various functions.
D.It could stand out among other AI tools.
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.C 4.B

had received through popular AI chatbot ChatGPT. He was curious to see if it would recognize them as fraudulent
(欺骗的), and it immediately did so.(去年,Clark Hoefnagels 的祖母被骗走了 2.7 万美元,他觉得有必要采取
Clark
A product called FraudGPT allows criminals to make content to scam others. More
worrying is the use of voice cloning, which can be used to convince (使相信) a relative that a loved one is in need
Yet rather than taking protective steps, he says that their fears are more often
relieved by a very low-tech strategy— their children telling them simply not to answer or reply to anything.(然而,
Given these increased global risks, you’d imagine that Mr Hoefnagels’ Catch
product would be popular with members of the public. Mr Hoefnagels says his next step is to find a suitable
partner with funding to support and bring it to the market.(考虑到这些日益增加的全球风险,你可以想象,Mr

If your skin is getting older, you are getting older, so be careful,” says Claudia
Cavadas at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Could our fight to remove wrinkles help restore youth both inside
and out
As skin ages, more and more cells enter a lifeless state called senescence (衰老). As time marches on, the
mechanisms (机制) for clearing senescent cells out start to decline and they build up in tissues. This is bad news.
The build-up of these cells has been shown to be a direct cause of some of the conditions that are generally more
common in older age.
To support her assumption around wrinkles driving whole-body ageing, Cavadas is planning to test
experimental drugs on animal models of aged skin. “The evidence is still fragile, but, in a year, we will have
experimental data” she says.
Whether resisting skin ageing resists whole-body ageing will need to be seen. But there is another good
reason to slow down skin ageing at least. Aged skin is worse than young skin at pretty much everything it is
supposed to do, says a plastic surgeon. Its barrier functions weaken, wounds are slower to heal (康复), sensitivity
to touch declines and its ability to defend diseases is weakened.
How about anti-wrinkle creams At present, there is limited evidence that they are genuine anti-ageing
treatments. We do, however, have one method for preventing skin ageing: sunscreen, which absorbs UV rays
before they do damage to the skin. It is never too soon to start. Even though the first visible signs of skin ageing
usually don’t appear until our mid-20s, the potential processes are under way much earlier.
Apparently, wrinkle treatment should no longer be seen as a “skin-deep” thing, but as a vital part of staying
biologically young and healthy. Everyone should pay attention to that, because we all have skin in this game.
1.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.The definition of senescence. B.The causes of skin ageing.
C.The process of cell declining. D.The consequences of skin ageing.
2.What does the underlined word “fragile” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Artificial. B.Considerable.
C.Insubstantial. D.Convincing.
3.Which is a disadvantage of the aged skin
A.It tends to be sensitive to touches. B.The cut on it recovers quickly.
C.The barrier functions work poorly. D.It stops guarding against diseases.
4.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs
A.Anti-wrinkle creams are quite useful.
B.Wrinkle treatment is important to health.
C.Sunscreen may pose potential risk to the skin.
D.Wrinkle treatment is a practice proven skin-deep.
文章第二段第一句“As skin ages, more and more cells enter a lifeless state called senescence(衰
细胞进入衰老状态;接着提到“As time marches on, the mechanisms (机制) for clearing senescent cells out start
to decline and they build up in tissues.(随着时间的推移,清除衰老细胞的机制开始衰退,衰老细胞在组织中
The build-up of these cells has
been shown to be a direct cause of some of the conditions that are generally more common in older age.(已经证实,
The evidence is still fragile, but, in a year, we will have experimental
data” she says.(她说:“目前的证据还 fragile,但一年后,我们将获得实验数据。”)”
Aged skin is worse than young skin at pretty much everything it is supposed
to do, says a plastic surgeon. Its barrier functions weaken, wounds are slower to heal (康复), sensitivity to touch
declines and its ability to defend diseases is weakened.(一位整形外科医生说,衰老的皮肤在几乎所有它应有的
Apparently, wrinkle treatment should no longer be seen as a “skin-deep”
thing, but as a vital part of staying biologically young and healthy. Everyone should pay attention to that, because
we all have skin in this game.(显然,皱纹治疗不应再被视为一件“表面”的事情,而应被视为保持生理年轻和
The Internet is a busy place, with billions of interactions, millions of content
pieces, and large numbers of social media accounts and data about people. But in recent years, the so-called “dead
Internet theory” has gained popularity. The theory suggests that most activity online is generated by bots (网上机
器人) and AI agents, not by humans.
Thanks to generative AI, plenty of AI-generated models and influencers now often show up online.
AI-generated content has changed the dynamics of the Internet, making it cheaper than ever to become a content
creator. It makes sense, especially from a creator’s perspective. If you spend a few hours on a video for your
social pages, you expect to get likes, follows, and subscriptions. However, if you can produce three videos within
the same time with AI assistance, you’re increasing your chances of creating those things within the same period.
However, AI could lead to an Internet that feels dead due to a lack of obviously original content and articles
that lack a human-touch — regardless of viewpoint, experience or humour. Fortunately, one glimmer of hope
here is that some online giants have been taking action to reduce bot use, or so they say. Such measures are partly
due to advertisers becoming more understanding regarding what makes up real human views versus bot-generated
ones. So, no, the Internet is not dead. At least not yet.
Dead Internet theory may be hyperbole (夸张), but it raises two important points. First, the Internet is
undoubtedly moving in this direction. Second, and more significantly, the theory causes a broader unease about
the emotional and social dynamics online. Social media is now the primary news source for many users around
the world. Therefore, there’s potential for AI agents to promote false information and interact with each other to
boost engagement, which does leave room for concern.
So we do have to accept that humans share online spaces with bots and AI agents. As information spreads
faster than ever across digital platforms, caution is advised: Never assume it’s actually a human you’re interacting
with on the other side of your screen.
1.What can be learned about “dead Internet theory”
A.AI agents and bots dominate online activities.
B.Content found online is frequently repeated.
C.Humans are losing interest in online interactions.
D.Social media collapse due to information overload.
2.Why do today’s creators turn to Al for content production
A.To guarantee the originality of their content.
B.To make content creation completely effortless.
C.To enhance efficiency of achieving their goals.
D.To adapt to the changing dynamics of the Internet.
3.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A.The role of social media in news distribution.
B.Digital platforms as the main source of news.
C.The analysis of the reasons for Internet death.
D.Social media’s influence and its potential issues.
4.What is the author’s advice on interacting online
A.Decrease the application of artificial intelligence.
B.Protect personal privacy by limiting shared details.
C.Try to identify the reliability of real human beings.
D.Keep a watchful eye on the Internet interactions.

The future of space food could be simple and strange. For decades,
astronauts have relied mostly on prepackaged food or the occasional grown vegetables during their visits to outer
space. With missions beyond Earth’s orbit in sight, a NAS Aled competition is hoping to change all that and start
a new era of sustainable space food.
To solve the problem of feeding astronauts on long duration missions, the US space agency started the
Deep Space Food Challenge in January 2022, asking companies to propose novel ways to develop sustainable
foods for future missions. About 200 companies entered, which were narrowed down to 11 teams in January 2023
as part of phase 2. On November 19, NASA announced the teams that will progress into the final phase of the
competition, with some winners to be announced in March. 2025.
All teams had to show systems that could operate for three years and feed a crew of four on a future space
mission. The proposals did not need to supply a crew’s entire diet, but they did need to create a variety of
nutritious foods to the astronauts.
One company took an incredibly unusual approach to the task. Air Company, base d in New York, designed
a system that could use the carbon dioxide breathed out by astronauts in space to produce alcohol, which can then
be fed to yeast (酵母) and produce “something that’s suitable for eating”. “It’s making food out of the air.” says
Stafford Sheehan, cofound er and chief technology officer of Air Company, “It sounds like magic, but when you
see it actually operating, it’s much more simple.”
Interstellar Lab in Florida had a different approach. Its system, called NUCLEUS, is a set of small capsules.
Each is self-contained, with its own temperature, watering system. etc. That would allow different vegetables to
be planted so that astronauts can easily grow their own food. in space.
While the winning ideas from the Deep Space Food Challenge won’t immediately be used by astronauts,
they show what might be possible on future missions. “You’ve got to start years in advance to make
weixinyy002544 sure you have the capability in place when you need it,” says Ralph Fritsche, senior project
manager for space crop production at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
1.Why was the Deep Space Food Challenge launched
A.To find tasty foods for astronauts. B.To found a space food supply center.
C.To develop a new source of space food. D.To attract astronauts to food exploration.
2.Which might be the requirement to become the winning company
A.Future space missions lasting three years.
B.Entire diets for long-lasting space research.
C.Concrete proposals involving a crew of four.
D.Sustainable supply of nutritious space foods.
3.What do paragraphs 4 and 5 focus on
A.Process of creating space foods. B.Unique systems of storing foods.
C.Examples of specific space foods. D.Prospects of these food companies.

How to criticize constructively
Giving constructive, critical feedback is an art. It’s a way to encourage positive behavior without blaming
or attacking the person you’re criticizing. 1 You need to remember that everyone is different and you
should customize the way you give feedback based on what you know about the person you’re talking to.
Give constructive criticism when you have a good reason to do so. Before you criticize, ask yourself,
“What is the point here ” 2 If you don’t have a clear objective in mind, you risk overloading the person
with additional information, or making them feel like you’ re boxing them in. You may have a specific behavior
you want to see changed. For example, your goal may be to get a student to stop shouting out over classmates
when they’re excited.
3 What you say matters, but how you say it matters a lot, too. If the other person feels like you’re
coming from a healthy, friendly place, they’re going to be much more likely to pick up what you’re putting down.
So keep your volume down, maintain relaxed body language, and try to make the other person feel respected and
appreciated.
Have the conversation in private. Praise in public and criticize in private for the best results. Nobody likes
to hear that they aren’t doing a perfect job, so have this conversation privately to put the person you’re criticizing
at ease. You could invite the person into your office with a smile on your face, or ask someone to swing by during
lunch for a quick chat. 4
Lead with something admirable. Find something appreciative to say about the other person. 5
Leading with a positive note will put the other person in a more receptive place before you get to the heart of the
issue.
A.Be conscious of your tone.
B.Point out his fault before praising his hard work.
C.Identify what you’re hoping to get out of the talk.
D.If you criticize a rude staff, start by appreciating his passion.
E.It’s essential to master the skills to give constructive criticism.
F.Having a criticism in mind doesn’t mean it needs to be respected.
G.Your criticism is more likely to be productive if nobody else is present.
【答案】1.E 2.C 3.A 4.G 5.D
1.前文“Giving constructive, critical feedback is an art. It’s a way to encourage positive behavior without blaming
or attacking the person you’re criticizing.
You need to remember that everyone
is different and you should customize the way you give feedback based on what you know about the person you’re
talking to.
指出应根据谈话对象的具体情况给予反馈,因此 E 项“It’s essential to master the skills to give constructive
criticism.
2.前文“Before you criticize, ask yourself, “What is the point here ” (在批评之前,问问自己:“重点是什么?”

with additional information, or making them feel like you’ re boxing them in.
C 项“Identify what you’re hoping to get out of the talk.(明确你希望从谈话中得到什么)”符合语境,建议明确谈
3.后文“What you say matters, but how you say it matters a lot, too. If the other person feels like you’re coming
from a healthy, friendly place, they’re going to be much more likely to pick up what you’re putting down. So keep
your volume down, maintain relaxed body language, and try to make the other person feel respected and
故选 A。

Leading with a positive note will put the other person in a more receptive place before you get to
the heart of the issue.
指出先赞美他人的做法的好处,因此 D 项“If you criticize a rude staff, start by appreciating his passion. (如果
你要批评一个粗鲁的员工,可以先肯定他的热情)”符合语境,提供了具体的例子来说明如何以赞美开头,
承前启后。故选 D。

(2025·江苏南京·三模)Surrounded by towering redwoods on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other,
the coastal city of Santa Cruz, some 70 miles south of San Francisco, is a great place for a young person to
experience nature.

D

Age is really just a number for Charly Bancarel, the 94-year-old running in this
year’s Paris Marathon Pour Tous. One post online tells us that the elderly man will be the oldest participant in the
race in 2024! This actually won’t be the first time that Charly has set a record like this. In 2023, he also became
the oldest runner to complete the Paris Marathon!
Runner’s World tells us that it took Charly Bancarel over seven hours to complete the 26.2 mile race.
Although he was one of the final hundred participants to cross the finish line, this was still an incredible

these races in total!
Now, the 94-year-old is getting ready for the Paris 2024 Marathon Pour Tous, or Marathon For All. This

complete the whole thing.

Mass Participation Marathon, amateur athletes will be able to run the Olympic marathon route at night, enabling

The old workshop door creaked open. Clara walked in quietly. Her shoes stepped on wood shavings (刨花)
that sparkled in the sunlight. Through the dusty windows, the morning light shone on Grandfather’s rough hands.
He was gluing a maple chair leg.
The wall calendar still showed January. Its yellowed pages were curling, just like dry leaves. An open order
book lay on the desk. February’s page was empty. There had been no new orders since mid-January. Clara held
her breath and recorded Grandfather with her phone. She focused on his quick hands as he measured angles with a
metal ruler. “This might help him,” she thought, eager to show how skilled he was.
However, when she posted the video online, negative comments flooded in. “Old ways for a dying
business!” “No wonder the business is failing!” Saddened, Clara deleted the video quickly. A spider crawled over
the empty order book. Its blank pages showed not many people wanted handmade things these days.
“Want to see my treasure ” Grandpa’ s voice broke the silence. He opened a leather album filled with
pencil sketches (草图) like library chairs from 1958 and park benches from 1962. A faded photo slipped out: a
smiling boy missing two teeth was grinning at the camera, holding a curved (弯曲的) spoon proudly.
“Timmy, my former student,” Grandfather smiled, touching the curve of the spoon in the photo. “Now he
designs furniture for tall buildings. Last month’s newspaper had an article about his curved stairs. It was inspired
by this very spoon.” He tapped the photo, adding, “Machines make things fast, but hands remember stories.”
Clara looked at the photo — the curved spoon, Timmy’s smile, and Grandpa’s young handwriting on the
back: Timmy’s first repair, age 7. Beside her, fresh wood shavings were shining. “Stories must be told,” Clara
murmured, taking out her phone again. This time, she aimed to share not just the work, but the story behind it.

In Los Angeles, California, there was an aquarium (水族馆) called “Ocean Wonders Aquarium, “located
along the scenic coastline. The aquarium was home to a wide variety of ocean creatures, attracting countless
visitors who were amazed at the colorful tropical (热带) fish, slow-moving seahorses, graceful jellyfish, and
intelligent dolphins. However, the aquarium had to go through a major restoration, and as of December 1st last
year, it closed its doors to the public. The construction was expected to last until the summer, with the entire
project taking more than six months to complete.
Without visitors, the aquarium grew extremely quiet and felt like an empty space. The animals, who were
used to human interaction every day, now saw very few human faces, only the familiar caretakers. Something
strange began to happen. The dolphins, once energetic and lively, seemed tired, lacking the usual enthusiasm they
had for play.
One morning, after the caretaker Amanda threw small fish into the dolphin’s tank, the dolphins swam lazily
to the tank walls and barely showed any interest in their favorite meals. They stared blankly into the distance, their
usual excitement absent. “Something’s not right,” Amanda whispered to herself
Dr. Harris was called in to investigate. He examined the dolphins and initially suspected digestive issues.
“Perhaps we should reduce their food intake,” he suggested. “Give them smaller amounts of food and see if that
helps with any potential digestive discomfort. ”
But after a few days, there was no improvement. The dolphins continued to suffer, showing no interest in
food or play. Disappointed and worried, John, a senior caretaker, gathered the team. “What should we do ” he
asked, his voice filled with concern.
Then, one of the caretakers posed an idea: “Could it be that the dolphins are lonely without the visitors ”
