Weddings are one of life's biggest celebrations, and they are observed in just
about every country and culture on the planet. Here are some wedding traditions from
around the world.
Scotland
Scottish weddings usually feature the handfasting ceremony. During the
ceremony, the bride (新娘) and bridegroom (新郎) each hold a piece of cloth. These
are carefully wound around the couple's joined hands. When they pull their hands
apart, the pieces become tied into a knot (结)—a symbol of the new union.
Germany
Guests at a German wedding get to see an interesting sight: the newly married
couple—still dressed in their suit and wedding dress—cuts a length of a tree in half
with a two person saw (锯). In this way, they show their ability to work as a team to
face any challenge they will meet in life.
Norway
A Norwegian wedding cake is made up of progressively smaller layers of iced
cake rings, which give the cake the shape of Christmas tree. The inside is empty and
has gifts or even a bottle of wine. The bride and bridegroom lift the top ring of the
cake, and the number of layers that stick to it is said to represent the number of
children they will have!
England
Brides in England typically wear “something old, something new, something
borrowed, and something blue” for their big day. The modern practice comes from a
traditional English song, and the things themselves represent protection, cheerfulness,
good luck, and purity, respectively.
Though the customs might vary, the feeling remains the same. Across the world,
weddings are times to celebrate love, happiness, and family.
21.Why is a two person saw used in the German wedding
A.To entertain the wedding guests.
B.To mark the couple's united efforts.
C.To represent the upcoming challenges.
D.To keep the couple from hurting each other.
22.In which wedding do brides wear different things to represent different wishes
A.The Scottish wedding. B.The German wedding.
C.The Norwegian wedding. D.The English wedding.
23.What does the passage show about wedding
A.Rules to follow. B.Special customs.
C.Ways to treat guests. D.Cultural backgrounds.

My father was always a good gardener. One of my earliest memories is standing
without shoes in the freshly tilled (翻耕的) soil, my hands blackened from digging in
the ground.
As a child, I loved following Dad around in the garden. I remember Dad pushing
the tiller ahead in perfectly straight lines. Dad loved growing all sorts of things:
yellow and green onions, watermelons almost as big as me, rows of yellow corn, and
our favorite-red tomatoes.
As I grew into a teenager, I didn’t get so excited about gardening with Dad.
Instead of the magical land of possibility, it had turned into some kind of prison.
However, as Dad grew older, his love for gardening never disappeared. After all the
kids were grown and had started families of their own, Dad turned to gardening like
never before. Even when he had cancer, he still took care of his garden.
But then, the cancer, bit by bit, invaded (入侵) his body. I had to do the things he
used to do. What really convinced me that Dad was dying was the state of his garden
that year. The rows and rows of colorful vegetables were gone. Too tired to weed (除
草) them, he simply let them be. He only planted tomatoes.
A few years later, I couldn’t even bear to look at anyone’s garden without having
strong memories pour over me like cold water from a bucket. Last year, I decided to
plant my own garden and started out with just a few tomatoes. That morning, after
breaking up an amount of soil, something caught the corner of my eye and I had to
smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, happily playing in the freshly tilled soil.
24. Why did the author like the garden when he was a child
A. The garden was freshly tilled by the worker.
B. He loved what his mother grew in the garden.
C. The garden was planted with colorful flowers.
D. He enjoyed being in the garden with his father.
25. When all the kids started their own families, the author’s father ______.
A. stopped his gardening
B. spent more time on gardening
C. turned to other hobbies
D. focused on planting tomatoes
26. What can be learned about the garden when the author’s father was seriously ill
A. The garden was almost deserted.
B. The author’s son took charge of it.
C. No plants grew in the garden at all.
D. It brought the author a great harvest.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. The Changing Seasons of Life
B. The Magic of Freshly Tilled Soil
C. Gardening through Generations
D. A Teenager’s Love for Gardening

The Leshan Giant Buddha is a statue of Maitreya (弥勒大佛) in sitting posture.
The Buddha is located in Sichuan Province, facing Min River, Qingyi River, and
Dadu River. In December, 1996, the Buddha was included by UNESCO on the list of
the World Heritage.
The statue was begun in the year 713 in the Tang Dynasty, and finished in the
year 803.The Buddha is 71 meters high. The eight meter long instep (脚背) is big
enough for one hundred people to sit on and the 28 meter wide shoulder is large
enough to be a basketball playground.
A monk called Hai Tong is connected with the Buddha forever. At that time, wild
waters brought out many boat accidents and people just put the disaster down to the
presence of a water spirit. So Hai Tong decided to make a statue beside the river
thinking that the Buddha would bring the water spirit under control. After 20 years'
begging from door to door,he finally collected enough money for the plan. When
some local government officials tried to get this amount of money,Hai Tong said that
they could get his eyeball but not the money raised for the Buddha. After he dug out
his eyeball, these officials ran away scared. The project was half done when Hai Tong
passed away, and two of his disciples (门徒) continued the work. After a total of 90
years' hard work, the project was finally completed.
Having such a long history, the Buddha was nearly destroyed by the wind and
rain. The Chinese government began the repairing work in 1963 under the instruction
of experts from UNESCO.
28.How did Hai Tong get the money for the Buddha
A.By calling for donation.
B.By working on the river.
C.By asking the government.
D.By selling his eyeball.
29.According to the passage, the Leshan Giant Buddha ________.
A.was completed when Hai Tong was alive
B.didn't exist now
C.played a good role in controlling the river
D.has been a World Heritage site for about twenty years
30.Hai Tong hoped to build the statue to ________.
A.make his temple more famous
B. show respect to the water spirit
C.protect the safety of the local people
D. get more people to believe in Buddhism
31.In this passage, Hai Tong can be best described as ________.
A.generous B.cruel C.easy going D.long suffering
D
It is late autumn—millions of gardeners across the northern hemisphere, pulled
on their thickest sweaters, spent hours clearing large piles of leaves and packed them
into plastic bags at the end of driveways.
In the US alone, nearly 10 million tonnes of garden waste go to landfill every
year. That is a large amount of effort, not just from an environmental viewpoint but
from that of our aching backs, too. So where does this advice come from Well, it
largely comes from the belief that thick fallen leaves can make plants under them
unable to breathe, especially shorter grass. They shut down important photosynthesis
(光 合 作 用 ) and get in the way of the growth of the shorter grass. However, this
received wisdom has recently been questioned by researchers at Wisconsin University.
The key finding of their new research was that although clearing fallen leaves is
one of the most common gardening practices, it makes very little sense. In natural
ecosystems, fallen leaves help return nutrients necessary for healthy plant growth to
the soil, which greatly improves soil condition. Removing leaves year after year
breaks this ecological balance. Letting some leaves stick around to cover your garden
is a great way to help your grass and the local ecosystem.
They further explained that if up to 50 percent of your grass lawn is covered by
fallen leaves, you might as well go back indoors and put your feet up. The advantages
of this light leaf coverage far outweigh the disadvantages—the leaves will quickly
break down and help next year's lawn grow far better than if you had cleared them.
Only at over 50 percent coverage do the Wisconsin researchers recommend clearing.
So why not consider leaving the leaves Save time, carbon and effort, and in
exchange get a healthier lawn from this garden waste—that seems like a pretty good
deal. And how many plastic bags could be saved by simply not binning fallen leaves
every year In the US alone, about 700 million.
32.What does the author describe in paragraph 1
A.An amazing autumn game.
B.A common sight in gardens.
C.A hot attraction in the north.
D.An extreme weather event.
33.What is the received wisdom in paragraph 2
A.Fallen leaves need not be cleared.
B.Fallen leaves protect shorter grass.
C.Fallen leaves block photosynthesis.
D.Fallen leaves are hard to break down.
34.Why does clearing fallen leaves make little sense according to the new research
A.Because it ruins city image.
B.Because it breaks gardening rules.
C.Because it affects local economy.
D.Because it causes ecological damage.
35.What's the author's attitude to Wisconsin University's study
A. Doubtful. B.Positive.
C.Unclear. D.Worried.

有两项为多余选项。
As you get older, you'll meet a wider range of people from diverse cultures. If
you haven't met many people from different backgrounds, it can be hard to know how
to respect their culture. 36 .
Know your own culture
One of the best ways to understand other people's cultures is to first consider
your own. Most of us don't realize that our customs and beliefs might seem strange to
someone else. Don't think of your own way of life as the only normal one and
everyone else's to be strange. 37 .
Learn about a different culture
Maybe you've recently met someone from a different culture, or you're curious
about how different people live. When you meet people from a different culture, ask
them about their lives. Also, you can read books, watch movies or listen to radio
shows. 38 .The more you learn, the more likely you will get used to greeting
cultural differences with curiosity rather than doubt.
39
Differences between us are what makes life so interesting, so just accept the
differences between yourself and your friends from different cultures. The best way to
respect people from other cultures is to strike a balance between curiosity and
appreciation: 40 .Also, learn how to just silently observe and appreciate the
differences that make us unique.
A.Respect other cultures
B.Appreciate the differences
C.Ask questions if your friends are open to it
D.In this way, you may find it hard to know your own culture
E.Otherwise, it's hard to approach those differences with respect
F.Here are some tips for learning more about them and about yourself

Mr. Jackson was a well respected teacher in a small town. He had always paid
much attention to his students, especially the ones who needed help. When he noticed
that one of his students, Emily, was not getting on the school bus with all the other
children and that her exam results had dropped a bit, he became worried.
One day, he decided to follow her and was surprised when he saw her walking
towards an old factory building. He parked his car a few blocks away from the factory
and waited for Emily. After a few minutes, he carefully moved towards the building,
his heart racing with each step.
As he entered the dark and dirty inside of the building, his mind was flooded
with a sense of pity. Then he saw Emily sitting on the floor, surrounded by her
textbooks and notebooks.
“Emily, what are you doing here?” Mr. Jackson asked, surprised.
Emily looked up and was surprised to see her teacher. She said, “Oh, Mr.
Jackson! I came here to do my homework. It's quiet here, and I feel safe.”
“Why don't you go home?” he asked, his concern growing.
“I live with my mother. Recently, my mother lost her job and we haven't found a
house yet,” she replied. “And my father used to work here, so it's a familiar place to
me.”
Mr. Jackson was heartbroken to hear this. He knew he had to do something to
help Emily. He sat down beside Emily and asked her to tell him everything that was
going on.
Emily shared stories about her father, who had passed away a few years before.
She talked about how her mother had struggled to make ends meet.
Mr. Jackson listened carefully. The more he knew about Emily, the more he
realised that being a teacher was not only about teaching subjects, but it was also
about shaping young minds and making a difference to their lives. He decided to take
action.

【原文】M: Good morning, boys and girls. In the past years, our school held many
competitions successfully, like Singing Competition, Reading Competition, Dancing
Competition, etc. I do know most of the students want to have a reading competition
as was held last year, but now we’ll have something funnier. It’s the Pet’s
Competition. Well, in fact, it aims at letting students know the importance of loving
animals. Nowadays, too many people can’t treat animals well. Some people do not
think carefully before getting a pet. You will not be disappointed because our teachers
will not be using dull theory to put a love of animals in us. Instead, we can all learn
something from a relaxing environment. The competition will be based on the dogs’
ability. Unfortunately, this competition is not open to our pets this year. Our school
has selected five dogs for this competition. That means we can just sit back and enjoy,
so please come to join this event and keep your diary during the activity. How can
you afford to miss such an educational and funny event of the year

The eight-meter-long instep (脚背) is big
enough for one hundred people to sit on and the 28-meter-wide shoulder is large
enough to be a basketball playground.

Letting some leaves stick around to cover your
garden is a great way to help your grass and the local ecosystem.
So why not consider leaving the leaves Save time, carbon and effort, and in
exchange get a healthier lawn from this garden waste—that seems like a pretty good
deal. And how many plastic bags could be saved by simply not binning fallen leaves
every year In the US alone, about 700 million.

you haven't met many people from different backgrounds, it can be hard to know how
to respect their culture. 36 .
Know your own culture
One of the best ways to understand other people's cultures is to first consider

someone else.
C.Ask questions if your friends are open to it

children and that her exam results had dropped a bit, he became worried.
He decided to take
action.
