Here are some wonderful festivals around the world that happen in spring. If you want to know more
about them, please click Here or visit http://wws.lfestival.Htm
SongKran — Thailand
Dates: 13th — 15th, April
In Thailand, people celebrate a festival called Songkran, when people head out to the streets with water
guns to spray (喷洒) everyone who walks past. It’s a very important traditional celebration in the country.
Naghol — Vanuatu
Dates: Every Saturday from April to May
Every year, villagers come together to celebrate the harvest of yams (甘薯), an important part in the
people’s diet in Vanuatu. The festival is most famous for its “land diving ceremony”. During the ceremony
men and boys dive to the ground from high wooden towers with only two thin vines (藤) tied to their feet.
Cherry Blossom Viewing — Japan
Dates: The cherry blossom season varies from year to year depending on the weather.
The festival is well-known. The Japanese celebrate the days when the flowers finally blossom (开花).
Only a few days later, the petals (花瓣) fall to the ground, like pink snowflakes, which means the traditional
festival only lasts for several days. In Japan, almost everyone has picnics in the parks to view the flowers.
Sinhalese New Year — Sri Lanka
Dates: 13th or 14th, April
Just like in many other countries in South East Asia, this is the time when people celebrate the
traditional New Year, an ancient celebration which marks the end of the harvest season and is one of two
times of the year when the sun is straight above Sri Lanka. There are a lot of delicious foods during the

Last summer, 17-year-old Li Mei from Chengdu stepped off the plane in Paris, carrying her beloved
erhu — a traditional Chinese two-stringed instrument that was passed down from her grandmother. As part
of a youth cultural exchange program, she had dreamed of this moment for years, yet the weight of
representing her heritage in a foreign land left her palms sweaty. Little did she know that this trip would
light a remarkable musical creation.
During a workshop at a local art school, Li met Pierre, a French violinist who was fascinated by her
instrument’s attractive sound. “It’s like the voice of ancient China,” he remarked with excitement, gently
plucking (拨) the erhu’s strings. Inspired by each other’s music, they decided to mix the soulful melodies(旋
律 ) of the erhu with the dynamic range of the violin for a performance at the upcoming Bastille Day
celebration.
As they practiced in a sunlit studio overlooking the Seine, Li taught Pierre how to imitate(模 仿 )
raindrops with quick movements on the erhu, while Pierre showed her how to combine Western harmonies
into the Chinese folk song “Jasmine Flower”. The cooperation(合作) created a charming sound that neither
had imagined possible. On the performance night, their piece “Silk Road Echoes” received thunderous
applause and strong recognition. The audience were amazed at how the erhu’s sad tones danced with the
violin’s vigorous (有活力的) melodies.
What began as a summer experiment blossomed into lasting friendship and something far greater.
Today, Li and Pierre co-teach virtual music classes, connecting students in Chengdu and Lyon through
weekly “global jam sessions.” Their students cooperate on pieces that mix erhu with guitar or Peking opera
with jazz. Li often tells her pupils, “Music has no borders; it’s a universal language that turns differences
into harmonies.” When traditions meet with open hearts, they don’t conflict(冲突); they compose something
totally new.
24. Why did Li Mei bring her erhu to Paris
A.To share Chinese music culture. B. To give it to her friend as a present.
C.To display it at a local studio. D. To teach students full-time.

D. The desire to teach music in a virtual way to students around the world.

With the development of modern technology, drones(无人机) are being applied to various fields. Drone
light shows are becoming especially popular in the West. By now, if you live on the U. S. East or West
Coasts, you’ve probably been troubled by wildfire smoke. The fires are increasing in frequency and intensity
as climate change worsens. And fireworks, as you can guess from their name, cause fires—more than you
might think.
That’s what caused a handful of California towns to quit fireworks and turn to drones last year. Sydney,
Australia, known for its massive fireworks display, is considering doing the same due to the risk of wildfires.
And fire danger is now top of mind for many U. S. cities as the Independence Day, or the American national
day, nears.
In addition to reducing the risk of fires, drone light shows present a safer alternative(选择) for the folks
behind the curtain. Fireworks injured more than 10,000 people last year because they can accidentally erupt
while on the ground. Drones won’t. And since light shows are required to keep the ground below the show
clear, there’s no risk of a drone falling from the sky into the crowd.
Drones are also less disturbing, creating only a light buzzing noise. Fireworks, on the other hand, can
burst your eardrum(耳膜) if you’re standing close enough. That’s a nuisance for some families with animals,
small children, or other people who are sensitive to noise.
But perhaps the biggest reason for the switch to drones is that they’re thought to be more eco-friendly.
Apart from starting fires, firework smoke leaves behind a trail of harmful chemicals and is considered a
pollutant. Drones are also a reusable option, capable of flying potentially hundreds of shows before they
even require maintenance. That’s a huge benefit to the environment—and to the companies paying to put on
these performances.
第 3 页
At the end of the day, though, some cities are likely switching to drones simply because they’re cooler.
That’s not to say that fireworks aren’t cool. But drones allow for more creativity, with the ability to
synchronize(同步) lights to music and recreate complex images in the sky.
However, it’s still too early to rush to the conclusion that drones will completely take the place of
fireworks in the near future.
28. What are the reasons why some cities give up fireworks
A. They are gradually unaffordable. B. They are not in fashion any more.
C. They speed up climate change. D. They may pose severe fire threats.
29. What method does the author use to present the advantages of drones in paragraph 3
A. By referring to data from previous studies.
B. By analyzing causes and effects.
C. By making a comparison.
D. By giving a definition.
30. What does the underlined word “nuisance” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Reward. B. Attraction. C. Annoyance. D. Instance.
31. What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows
A. The similarities shared by drones and fireworks.
B. The potential challenges drones will face.
C. The significance of drones in promoting economy.
D. The strong competition from companies in different industries.

While facial(面部的) recognition technology continues to promote many aspects of human life, it’s
now being applied to aid the protection of giant pandas, Xinhua News Agency reported recently.
A nature reserve has built an AI-enabled video monitoring system to better protect giant pandas.
Equipped with 300 infrared (红外线) cameras, the monitoring system helps ensure the health and safety of
110 wild giant pandas there. It was put into operation two years ago, and has captured(捕捉) numerous
photos and videos of pandas engaged in activities such as eating, resting and fighting for mates. It provides
scientific data to help us grasp pandas’ living conditions and establish conservation strategies. More
importantly, it achieves real-time monitoring of the reserve so that we can discern the threats to the wildlife
as early as possible.
A recent study found the facial recognition system can automatically recognize various wild animals caught in infrared cameras, allowing researchers to collect data on giant pandas while staying indoors. It’s
shown that by equipping the AI-aided system to retain the filed photos of giant pandas, we obtain a 98% success rate for species recognition. Its success rate of recognizing other wild animals can top 80%. In 2021
第 4 页
alone, this monitoring system captured 2,896 photos of giant pandas and other rare animals and filmed 3,218
seconds of footage, showcasing the reserve’s sound ecological environment as well as a gradual rise in
panda population there.
Head of the reserve’s administration, Liu Xingming, said researchers used the system not only to
observe the dynamics and health of the giant panda population but also to learn about changes in the natural
surroundings of their habitat. “The monitoring system has enabled systematic, scientific, and intelligent
conservation of wildlife,” he added. “However, it is expected to be further improved and optimized in the
near future.”
32. What does the underlined word “discern” mean in paragraph 2
A. Solve. B. Pose. C. Reduce. D. Identify.
33. What can be learned about the new technology from the study
A. It exactly recognizes any species.
B. It makes panda population rise rapidly.
C. It contributes to species data collection.
D. It understands pandas’ facial expressions.
34. Which can be inferred from what Liu Xingming said
A. The giant panda population is healthier.
B. The system hasn’t solved all problems.
C. The system has no need to be improved.
D. The giant panda’s habitat has changed.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Panda Facial Recognition Collecting and Using Database
