Being bored is no fun, especially at work. There’s nothing worse than finding yourself bored
in your office on a Monday morning and realize there’s still four and a half more days to the
weekend. But a new research done by Australian National University argues that while boredom is
certainly boring, it isn’t all bad. This bored mental state can actually spark (引 发 ) precious
creativity.
The study asked 52 subjects (实验对象) to do a boring job: Sort apart a bowl of red and
green beans with just one hand for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, 49 other subjects — the control
group — were instructed to create art projects with paper, beans, and glue.
Once the 30 minutes was over, each group was asked to spend five minutes on a creative
task:they had to come up with reasons why a hypothetical (假设的) person was two hours late for
a meeting. The researchers found that the bored group came up with not just more ideas but more
creative ideas than the control group.
The research found that although some previous research implies boredom can lead to
dissatisfaction at a job, boredom didn’t produce unwanted emotions that could be detrimental to
mental health. In this case, people who were bored were just bored, and they walked away with a
net benefit of creativity.
“Boredom is not miserable and harmful based on my research,” says the study’s lead author,
Guihyun Park. “People want to get out of a boring state, so they are induced to novelty-seeking
(追求新奇的) unique thinking, which brings out creativity.”
24. What can we know about the 52 subjects
A. They often felt very bored. B. They always thought of weekends.
C. They were asked to do creative work. D. They were required to sort beans.
25. What can we learn from the third paragraph
A. The bored group was as creative as the control group.
B. Bored people could work better than those who were not.
C. The two groups did different tasks to test their creativity.
D. Bored people are often late for a meeting.
26. What can the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 4 probably be replaced by
A. valuable. B. effective. C. harmful. D. positive.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. Boredom Brings out Creativity B. Never Feel Bored When Doing Work
C. Being Bored Is No Fun at Work D. Boredom Produces Unwanted Emotions

With the development of modern technology, drones(无人机) are being applied to various
fields. Drone light shows are becoming especially popular in the West. By now, if you live on the
高一 英语试卷 第 3页 共 9页
U. S. East or West Coasts, you’ve probably been troubled by wildfire smoke. The fires are
increasing in frequency and intensity as climate change worsens. And fireworks, as you can guess
from their name, cause fires—more than you might think.
That’s what caused a handful of California towns to quit fireworks and turn to drones last
year. Sydney, Australia, known for its massive fireworks display, is considering doing the same
due to the risk of wildfires. And fire danger is now top of mind for many U. S. cities as the
Independence Day, or the American national day, nears.
In addition to reducing the risk of fires, drone light shows present a safer alternative for the
folks behind the curtain. Fireworks injured more than 10,000 people last year because they can
accidentally erupt while on the ground. Drones won’t. And since light shows are required to keep
the ground below the show clear, there’s no risk of a drone falling from the sky into the crowd.
Drones are also less disturbing, creating only a light buzzing noise. Fireworks, on the other
hand, can burst your eardrum if you’re standing close enough. That’s a nuisance for some families
with animals, small children, or other people who are sensitive to noise.
But perhaps the biggest reason for the switch to drones is that they’re thought to be more
eco-friendly. Apart from starting fires, firework smoke leaves behind a trail of harmful chemicals
and is considered a pollutant. Drones are also a reusable option, capable of flying potentially
hundreds of shows before they even require maintenance. That’s a huge benefit to the
environment—and to the companies paying to put on these performances.
At the end of the day, though, some cities are likely switching to drones simply because they’
re cooler. That’s not to say that fireworks aren’t cool. But drones allow for more creativity, with
the ability to synchronize(同步) lights to music and recreate complex images in the sky.
Nevertheless, it’s still too early to rush to the conclusion that drones will completely take the
place of fireworks in the near future.
28. What are the reasons why some cities give up fireworks
A. They are too expensive. B. They are not cool any more.
C. They speed up climate change. D. They may pose fire risks.
29. What method does the author use to demonstrate the advantages of drones in paragraph 3
A. By referring to data from previous studies.
B. By analyzing causes and effects.
C. By making a comparison.
D. By giving a definition.
30. What does the underlined word “nuisance” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. reward. B. attraction. C. annoyance. D. instance.
31. What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows
A. The similarities shared by drones and fireworks.
B. The potential challenges drones will face.
C. The importance of drones in promoting economy.
D. The strong competition from companies in different industries.

Cats perform better than human babies on a simple measure of language comprehension. The
research, published Oct. 4 in the journal Scientific Reports, revealed that. Research in the past five
years has shown that cats can recognize not only their own names but those of familiar humans
and animals. But can they associate words and objects more generally
高一 英语试卷 第 4页 共 9页
To test this theory, Saho Takagi and her team gave 31 adult cats a simple word game used to
investigate the same ability in human babies. The cats were shown two nine-second cartoon clips
(电影片段) with recordings of their owners repeating a made-up word over each image. The two
clips-a red sun labeled “paramo” and a blue unicorn with the word “keraru”-were repeated until
the cats appeared to get bored and paid 50% less attention to the screen.
After a short break, the image clips were repeated, but this time, half of the pairings were
switched. The switched clips visibly affected the cats, with recordings of “paramo” alongside the
unicorn and “keraru” with the sun holding their interest an average of 15% longer. That the cats
noticed this change and were clearly perplexed (迷惑的) by it is good evidence that they had
formed a link between the words and images, written in the study.
The experiment revealed that the cats were able to learn the combinations from just two
nine-second exposures - significantly faster than babies, who required at least four 20-second trials.
However, these comparisons should not be overinterpreted. “You’re comparing an adult
animal with an immature animal from a different species,” said Dr. Carlo Siracusa, an animal
behaviorist at the University of Pennsylvania. “Moreover, a certain number of the cats have to be
excluded, so there’s already a bias (偏见)-not a fault of the research. Interacting with cats in the
experiment is no easy task.” he added. Despite its limitations, the study does show that cats are
capable of forming picture-word associations, the team wrote in the paper, although whether this
is an inborn ability or a product of domestication remains a mystery.
32. Why did Saho Takagi and her team carry out the experiment
A. To test cats’ recognition of familiar names.
B. To explore cats’ word-object association ability.
C. To reveal cats’ secret of language understanding.
D. To compare cats’ memory with that of human babies.
33. What is presented in paragraph 2
A. Data collection. B. Result analysis.
C. Practical examples. D. Experimental methods.
34. According to the last sentence in paragraph 3, what’s the implication(暗示)about the cat’s
cognitive (认知的) abilities
A. Cats have a limited short-term memory and quickly forget associations.
B. Cats can form expectations based on learned word-object associations, similar to humans.
C. Cats rely solely on auditory cues rather than visual stimuli for recognition.
D. Cats are only responsive to their own names, not arbitrary words.
35. What is one limitation of the study, as mentioned by Dr. Carlo Siracusa
A. It’s difficult to engage cats.
B. There’re not enough clips involved.
C. The cats tested are chosen randomly.
D. Similarities between species are ignored.
