A pair of red foxes playing together against a snowy backdrop and a baby polar bear bathing in
brilliant sunshine surrounded by a mass of purple fireweed-both scenes are documented by two
Canadian wildlife photographers.
Martin Gregus and Brittany Crossman are among the 25shortlisted nominees(被提名的候选人)for this year's Wildlife Photographer of the Year People's Choice Award.
Since he was eight years old, Gregus has been passionate about photography, working on
projects with his father, who is also a photographer. In 2015, he had the opportunity to visit various
areas of the Arcti(c 北极),where he saw polar bears in a summer climate for the first time. After that
,Gregus worked to develop a relationship with the bears in this area, which he says is key to his
success in photographing them.
To Gregus, this nomination is more than just a physical award but a chance to connect with
others in the profession and celebrate everyone's achievements. “We live a very secluded life as
wildlife photographers. You know, we give up most of our life to fiIm animals, so when we are given a
chance to be around people, it's remarkable."
Earlier in 2022, Crossman was named the Canadian Wildlife Photographer of the Year by
Canadian·Geographic. Her nomination for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year People's Choice
Award, Fox affection, features two red foxes in Ontario. Now, she teaches wildlife workshops for
people who are also interested in nature photography.
“Right now, I have been focusing on exploring urban wildlife. I hope in the future that I will get to
see other parts of the world, recording different species with my camera. In particular, I'd love to
photograph brown bears on the west coast of Canada or Alaska," Crossman says.

In psychology, culture is often discussed as a fairly unique human capacity, rooted in our ability
to learn from others, come up with new innovations, and pass down our knowledge across historical
time. But as biologist Frans de Waal notes, the morc we study other species, the less unique we
appear to be."After the apes(类人狼)break down the wall between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom, the floodgates often open to include species after species." Planning for the future
and recognizing oneself in a mirror, all of these were once thought to be cognitive(认知的)capacities
that were exclusive to humans. Yet time and again, species ranging from bonobos to crows have been
shown to possessthese abilities as well.
Some of the earliest evidence of animal cualture comes from observations of songbirds. It turns
out that different songs are observed in different regions. Just as humans in different regions speak
different languages or dialects, so too do birds.
Scientists have also observed evidence that animals may possess dietary cultures as well. One
classic example comes from the observation in the 1950s of monkeys living on a Japanese island. One
monkey hegan to wash her sweet potatoes in a nearby stream. Over time other members of the group
began to copy this behavior and started washing them in the ocean, potentially to add a salty
flavor. This novel way of preparing food spread through the group, learned by one generation after the
next,and continued for years.
And it's not just mammals (哺乳动物) that have been shown to have the ahility to puss down
cultural practices. In a recent study, researchers trained a bee to pull on a string to release nectar(花
蜜 ) from an artificial flower. The researchers then had other bees observe this behavior from a
distance and found that they readily learned it as well. The authors concluded that this work was a
powerful demonstration of how cultural practices are passed down among insects.
28. What does the author stress in the first paragrapa
A.Culture is a unique human capacity.
B. Apes differ significantly from other animals.
C.Knowledge is passed down across generations
D. Humans and animals share some cognitive abilities
29.Why did the monkeys wash the sweet potatoes
A.To clean them.
B.To improve the taste.
C. To copy the behavior of other species..
D. To gain attention from other group members.
30.What did the string-pulling task show
A.Bees coud train each other.
B.Animals could learn from observation.
C. Mammals were no smarter than insects.
D. Innovation spread faster among certain animals.
31.What is the best title for the text
A. Do animals have culture B.How do animals live
C.How do animals communicate D.Do animals create rules

A decade ago, I was advising a newly-hired chief financial officer (CFO) in chargc of 300people. I'd
asked her to prepare a ninc-minutc speech and then all 300 souls gathered in thc ballroom. Unfortunately,
our new CFO misplaced her purse and couldn't find the talking points for her opening specch. So what did
shc say She talked a bit about her life and began giving credit and appreciation to he cmployces for all the
fantastic work they had done. She went on to lead with empathy ( 共 情 ) and kindness, and conscquently her people were energized. That was a successful speech.
These days. the number of employccs who say they feel cngaged, satisfied and energized at work is
at a historic low. More people are leaving the corporate rat race to pursue their own entrepreneurial
ventures(创业企业).So can companies maintain their top performers? Certainly they can.
A study led by researcher Mei Feng from Berkeley University reveals firms with prosocial leaders
perform better. Prosociality is defincd as "positive” social behavior intended to promote others' welfare.
In this case, researchers categorized certain leaders as “prosocial" based on whether or not they gave
credit to their employees for good performance and took responsibility themselves during poor
performance.
They found that companies with prosocial leaders had lower turnover among employees, more
policies that are favorable to employees' well-being and development, higher customer satisfaction
ratings, higher profitability, as well as lower financial, operational and reputational risk, which suggests
prosocial managers improve organizational efficiency.
Berkeley's another researcher Lalin Ank and her co-workers explored the effects of “prosocial
bonuses" where employees could allocate monetary rewards to charitable donations or as gifts to
co-workers. In their experiments, Belgian parmaceutical sales teams and Canadian dodgeball teams were
offered either "spend it on yourself' or "spend it on your teammates" bonuses. When participants
received money to spend on teammates, the team performed better than teams given funds for personal
use.
Overall, these findings-suggest that creating a prosocial workplace is not only the right thing to do
but also a strategic business decision, with clear financial returns.
32. What was the key to the CFO's success in her opening speech
A.Detailed company plans. B.Touching personal life stories.
C.Recognition of employees' efforts. D.Criticism of previous management.
33. What is the function of the question in paragraph 2
A.To question the experiments. B. To commpate two different topics.
C.To doubt the previous assumption. D.To introduce the following paragraphs.
34. What do prosocial leaders tend to do according to the text
A.Show confidence in themselves. B.Frequent employees' private houses.
C.Acknowledge incompetent employees.
D.Take responsibility for the team's mistakes.
35.Which is the best title for the text
A. Kinder Emnployees Are More Acceptable
B.Prosocial Workplaces Are More Successful
C.Solutions to Poor Organizational Efficiency
D.Financial Strategies for Struggling Ccompanies

Summer is the swimming season. As fun as a swimming pool can be, it's also a major safety risk if you don't tke the appropriate precautions(预防措施).Here are some tips for a safe swimming

adults.Prevent this by making sure people are only using existing diving boards that are designed to
dive into deep water.
Another risk is a condition called "dry drowning", This happens after a near-drowning event in

Tom concentrated hard. The rocket competition was about to begin, and he wanted to be
sure he hadn't left any detaiI unchecked. No possible fault was too small to be ignored. Nothing
could threaten his winning. Always being on top, he pushed himself to remain there. Although the
other kids rarely camne over to him, he would ne ver go over to them because he'd win again and
they couldn't ignore that.
He opened his toolbox. Moving past various parts and tools, he took out the pieces of his
launching stand and started putting it together. As he worked, he glanced at the other rockets. He
noticed problems quickly: one rocket had messy areas around its stickers, and another had wings
placed too high-without doubt, these rockets would fall down. One rocket, however, caught his
eye. Its body shone in the sun. The painted areas were finely done, and connection between the
parts was perfect. His critical eye detected that this rocket could beat his.
A thin boy lifted it carefully. "Hi, my name is Ed. Nice rocket you've got there!" said the boy
friendly. “Thanks," Tom looked up and replied without much emotion, but then regretted it. He
added,“I haven't seen you at any of the competitions. YouI don't care for these contests " Ed said,
“I never really thought about them, I keep pretty much to myself."
It was then that the announcer began explaining the rules, but Tom wasn't paying
attention. He kept staring at Ed's rockel. Then his heart suddenly raced-Ed had no chance of
winning. As Ed lifted his rocket to place it on the stand, one wing had gotten caught and was now
loose. It was now
fatally(致命地)weakened. But Ed hadn't noticed. He glanced back at Tom and gave a thumbs-up sign.
Though Tom felt a wave of regret, he decided not to say anything-why risk his certain victory Then it
went, one rocket after another, most galning respectable heights, but none as high as Tom's. Tom
watched, yet the problems they had didn't make him feel good.
