Do you feel a little guilty (内疚的) about your daily, mid-afternoon nap Don’t.
Research can show that catching a few ZZZs after lunch can be good for your brain. But keep in mind that the length of your nap matters.
According to research, a 30-to 90-minute nap in older adults appears to offer brain benefits, but anything longer than an hour and a half may create problems with cognition (认知).
Researchers looked at information from 2,974 people in China ages 65 and older. Nearly 60 percent of the participants reported napping after lunch for about an hour. They found that people who napped for 30 to 90 minutes had better memories than people who did not nap or who napped for longer than 90 minutes.
Longer naps can cause a couple of other problems, says Charlene Gamaldo, a medical expert. For example, people who take longer naps may feel groggy right after they wake up.“Because they are sleeping longer, they may wake up from a deeper stage of sleep and may feel less awake for a period,”Gamaldo says. Another problem is they can’t sleep at night. Gamaldo has seen patients who take long naps during the day have insomnia (失眠症) at night.
Research says that the best time for older adults to take a nap is between 1:00 and 4:00pm because of their sleep-wake cycles. And the nap should last between 20 and 40 minutes. In general, people who sleep too much or too little may have poor health.
