When Jonathan Kola met two students from MIT’s Sloan School of Management in his last year at Harvard, his life changed. The students were trying to found a company to improve recycling in Nigeria, but they needed someone who could handle the computer programming and other technical elements. Kola, an electrical engineering and computer science major at the Harvard was greatly inspired and he joined them part time.
That start-up, Wecyclers, ended up influencing so many decisions Kola would make later in his career. Like the MIT students, he went on to business school, eventually getting his MBA from Stanford University.
After graduating both SEAS and Stanford, Kola worked at Google as a cloud engineer for three years. He was fascinated by the company’s ongoing research into self-driving cars, but noticed that the streets those cars were tested on were of a much higher quality than in his home country. He eventually founded his own company, AMT Technologies.
AMT produces an artificial intelligence-based driver safety platform, capable of detecting everything from potential crashes to distracted driving. Kola founded the company to address a major challenge in Africa, which has the highest rate of road deaths of any region in the world, with Kenya among the worst countries. Kola owes those deaths and injuries to a range of factors, from poorly maintained roads to a lack of enforcement of road rules to a high frequency of older cars.
“A vehicle that rolls off the Ford production line in 2024 has so many bells and whistles with regards to safety, such as self-braking systems and crash warning,” he said. “But in Kenya, most of the vehicles that are imported tend to be at least seven years old, so they’ll have less complicated safety systems.”
Kola said, “I’m always curious about new technologies, always trying to see what’s out there and how it could be applied to Kenya.”
4. How did Wecyclers influence Kola’s career choice
A. It inspired him to work at Google. B. It taught him technical skills.
C. It provided him with financial support. D. It motivated him to pursue an MBA.
5. Why did Kola leave Google
A. He disliked the company’s focus on self-driving cars.
B. He determined to tackle issues specific to his country.
C. He aimed to earn higher pay by starting his own business.
D. He wanted to compete with Ford’s vehicle safety systems.
6. What is the main function of AMT’ driver safety platform
A. To maintain roads in poor-condition areas.
B. To upgrade outdated vehicle safety systems.
C. To design self-braking systems for new vehicles.
D. To detect potential crashes and distracted driving.
7. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Wealth and Wisdom: How Education Transforms Lives
B. From Harvard to Google: A Journey of Academic Excellence
C. Innovation with Purpose: Tech Solutions for Local Challenges
D. The Future of Self-Driving Cars: A Kenyan Engineer’s Vision
C
To create truly dynamic ecosystems that host a lot of biodiversity, benefit local people, and produce lots of different foods, a forest needs a wide variety of species. Left on their own, some deforested areas can restore surprisingly fast with minimal help from humans.
New research from an international team of scientists finds that 830,000 square miles of deforested land in wet tropical regions — an area larger than Mexico — could regrow naturally if left on its own. Brazil, Indonesia, China, Mexico, and Colombia account for 52 percent of the estimated potential regrowth. According to the researchers, that would boost biodiversity and suck up 23.4 gigatons of carbon over the next three decades.
A rainforest can spring up in one to three years, while that sort of regrowth isn’t a given, though. First of all, humans would have to stop using the land for intensive agriculture — achieve big yields thanks to fertilizers and other chemicals — or raising herds of cattle, the weight of which makes it hard for new plants to take root. Cows, of course, also tend to prefer young plants. Secondly, it helps for tropical soil to have a high carbon content to provide for plants. Organic carbon really helps the soil to be nutritious in terms of its ability to hold water. Places with soils like that are much more likely to have forests pop up.
It’s also beneficial for a degraded area to be near a standing tropical forest. That way, birds can fly across the area, letting out seeds they have eaten in the forest. And once those plants get established, animal species like monkeys can feed on their fruits and spread seeds, too. This starts a self-completing cycle of biodiversity.
The more biodiversity, the more a forest can stand shocks. If one species disappears because of disease, for instance, another similar one might fill the void. When biodiversity is built in the system, it tends to be more functional in an ecological sense, and it tends to be more strong.
8. What is the function of paragraph 2
A. To highlight the extent of deforestation globally.
B. To discuss the challenges of restoring deforested land.
C. To illustrate a damaged rainforest can regrow on its own.
D To emphasize the need for human efforts in forest recovery.
9. Which of the following benefits the regrowth of a rainforest
A. The soil rich in carbon. B. The urban development nearby.
C. The presence of large cattle herds. D. The intensive agricultural practices.
10. What does the underlined word mean in the last paragraph
A. Form. B. Gap. C. Detail D. Survey
11. What is the text mainly about
A. The role of humans in forest management.
B. The negative impacts of intensive agriculture.
C. The importance of biodiversity in ecosystems.
D. The potential for natural regrowth of deforested areas.
D
In an era when the average person checks their smartphone nearly 144 times a day, devoting oneself to a lengthy novel or complex piece of literature has become a rarity. The digital revolution, while bringing easy access to information, has degraded our capacity for deep reading.
Deep reading is more than just processing words on a page; it’s an experience that involves critical thinking, empathy (共情) , and knowledge exploration. This form of reading allows individuals to engage with complex ideas and connect emotionally with texts. Historically, deep reading has been instrumental in education and personal development, cultivating a person capable of critical thought and innovation.
In a digital age, the way we consume information has dramatically changed. For instance, social media platforms are designed to catch our attention through endless browsing and bite-sized content. This design can weaken our patience for longer, more demanding texts. A study from Microsoft Corp. suggested that the human attention span has decreased from 12 seconds in 2000 to about 8 seconds today, highlighting how digital media affects our ability to concentrate.
In the digital landscape, attention has become what companies compete for, often employing strategies that disturb our attention spans. Notices, advertisements, and big data-based content make it difficult for readers to find the uninterrupted time necessary for deep reading.
Our brains are remarkably adaptable, and the way we process information can change with our habits. Neuroscientists have found that regular Internet use can rewire neural pathways, favoring quick decision-making and surface processing over deep thinking. Nicholas Carr argues that the Internet encourages rapid, distracted sampling of small bits of information from many sources—a mode of thinking that is contrary to deep reading.
The decline in deep reading doesn’t just affect individual cognition (认知) ; it has broader societal consequences. In education, students accustomed to surface-level reading may struggle with texts that require analysis and critical thinking. This trend can lead to a workforce less prepared for jobs that demand deep understanding and problem-solving skills.
Given the challenges, how can we preserve and promote deep reading in the digital age
12. Why is deep reading important
A. It promotes the use of social media. B. It boosts readers` innovative ability.
C. It allows for faster decision-making. D. It enables quick scanning of information.
13. How do the Internet and digital media affect deep reading
A. They improve reading efficiency.
B. They increase access to diverse resources.
C. They contributes to divided attention habits.
D. They provide new ideas for better understanding.
14. What message does the author mainly convey in para 5
A. The human brain has a strong adaptability.
B. The internet has a positive impact on our brains.
C. The way we process information changes with our habits.
D. The internet disfavors deep reading despite its advantages.
15. What is expected to be talked about next
A. Strategies to promote deep reading. B. The future application of digital media.
C. The benefits of digital reading materials. D. Historical examples of deep reading practices.

Creative Thinking
Creative thinking is coming up with ideas or solutions to problems that other people can’t. It is letting imagination run free thinking out of the box, forgetting what is expected and looking for the unexpected or a way to do the impossible. ____16____
For children, creative thinking comes so easily. ____17____ Yet, for others, they struggle along, wishing they could be more imaginative, but afraid to try.
____18____ Ignore the fear and make the effort. Let go of the restrictions you have placed on your thoughts that are creating a cautious approach to life. Now is the time to turn all that stored creativity into a power for leading a happier and more productive life.
The second step is to open your mind to all ideas and opinions. Being open minded is a willingness to look at every situation from more than one perspective, and acknowledging that others’ perspectives may be smarter than your own. Being open to discovery, learning, and giving yourself permission to explore all possibilities is the key to creative thinking. ____19____ So if you have become one of those who are unwilling to listen to anyone, it’s time to change.
Look beyond the obvious. Creative thinkers look for the not-so-obvious answers rather than get stuck on the obvious solutions. ____20____ They are not afraid of sounding silly or being laughed at about their wild suggestions. Then, from the list they create — including everything from the obvious to the impossible, they find a solution that works.
A. The first step is to stop being afraid.
B. Even for some adults it appears to be a natural “talent.”
C. You don’t have to agree with everyone; just follow your heart.
D. Plus, different perspectives can be a stimulus for new ideas.
E. They will brainstorm and quickly come up with multiple ideas.
F. It can be used in every aspect of life-personal and professional.
G. Incredible opportunities are missed because of lazy thinking patterns.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In a quiet mountain village between snowy peaks, 16-year-old Mia found a young snow leopard cub (雪豹幼崽) caught in an old metal trap during her afternoon walk. The cub’s leg was badly hurt, and its golden eyes shone with fear under the pale winter sun.
Though her father had repeatedly warned her about the dangers of wild animals, Mia couldn’t bear to leave the suffering creature. Carefully, she used her woolen scarf to open the trap, freeing the cub. She named it Amber and placed dried meat from her lunch bag nearby, hoping to give it strength. To her amazement, Amber returned the next morning, limping (跛的) but alive, its eyes now filled with cautious curiosity.
Over the following weeks, Amber began appearing during Mia’ s daily walks in the pine forests. At first, the cub kept a safe distance. Slowly, trust grew between them. Mia shared her sandwiches, while Amber guided her to secret paths leading to clear streams and sheltered caves. Their bond deepened — Amber would rub its head against Mia’ s leg like a pet cat, and Mia learned to recognize the cub’s different calls.
However, everything changed one evening at sunset. Mia’ s father discovered Amber near their sheep fences. “That wild beast will kill our sheep!” he shouted angrily, grabbing a thick wooden stick. Mia screamed, “She’s my friend! Please don’t hurt her!” Sensing danger, Amber ran into the shadowy forest, leaving Mia standing frozen with tears.
Heartbroken, Mia searched the mountains tirelessly. Every morning before school, she left meat near their favorite meeting spot — a flat rock beneath a giant pine tree. Every afternoon, she wandered through icy valleys calling Amber’s name. Weeks passed, but the cub never reappeared. The mountains felt emptier, their silence broken only by the lonely wind. Mia’ s doubts grew heavier — had her kindness driven Amber into greater danger Was it possible for humans and wild animals to truly trust each other Snow began to fall again, covering the paths. The wilderness offered no answers, only the rushing wind.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One stormy night, Mia heard a weak cry coming from the edge of the forest.

【答案】
One stormy night, Mia heard a weak cry coming from the edge of the forest. Ignoring the coldness, she followed the sound and found Amber, her injured leg bloody. Without hesitation, Mia carried the poor cub home. Her father stood at the doorway, his angry expression softening as he saw the dying cub and the anxiety in his daughter’ s eyes. Together, they cleaned the injury and fed her warm milk. For days, Amber rested by the fireplace until her strength returned. One dawn, Mia opened the door. Amber glanced back and then disappeared into the forest.
When spring arrived, a familiar shadow appeared under the giant pine tree. Amber stood there, healthy and tall, with sunlight shining on her body. She approached Mia, rubbing its head against Mia’ s leg gently — a gesture unchanged since their first meeting. Mia’ s father watched from afar, his earlier anger replaced by quiet awe. “She remembers,” he murmured. As Amber walked away, Mia smiled. She realized that true kindness involves care and respect. Humans and nature aren’t masters and servants, but neighbors sharing one precious world.
