The horses, cows, and giraffes at Marwell Zoo are doing something wonderful. They are creating renewable
energy just with their waste! It makes Marwell Zoo the first wildlife park in the UK to produce renewable energy
by using animal waste.
In the past, the zookeepers sent the animal waste away to be composted(把……制成堆肥). But then, they had
a great idea—why not use it
Tropical(热带)plants and animals need high temperatures to live. Their buildings in the zoo are sometimes
heated by burning oil. But oil can be used up, and burning it will produce much CO2 and bad smells. So, when the
zookeepers built a new building for animals, they decided to use animal waste to heat it.
Zookeepers sweep up the animal waste every morning. Then they mix the waste with unused things like wood.
After that, they turn the mixture into bricks(砖)and let them dry naturally. They burn the bricks to provide heat for
the building. Although burning these bricks also produces CO2, the zoo grows many now plants which need CO2
and cut down on the environmental pollution.
A zookeeper Zoe Newnham says, "It's a good thing that the heating doesn't smell bad!" As a result, it can also
help avoid bad smells and help keep the air clean. Dr. Duncan, the head of the local government, also says that
producing heat by using animal waste is special in the UK and even across the world as far as they know.
The zoo sets a good example for others. By using animal waste to create energy, the zoo is cutting down on its
CO2 footprint and protecting the environment.
( ) 46. How does the writer lead into the topic
A. By telling a story. B. By showing a fact.

( ) 47. Which question does Paragraph 3 answer
A. Why did zookeepers reuse animal waste
B. How did zookeepers reuse animal waste
C. When did zookeepers reuse animal waste
D. Where did zookeepers reuse animal waste
( ) 48. Which shows the correct steps of how zookeepers use animal waste to produce heat
①Sweep up the animal waste. ②Burn bricks to heat the buildings.
③Mix animal waste with unused things. ④Turn the mixture into bricks and dry them naturally.

Is Ignoring (忽视) a Good Way to End a Friendship or Relationship
Imagine you have been talking to your best friend every day on social media. Then, one day, he just stopped.
No replies, no likes—it’s like he disappeared!
This is called ignoring. 51 People do this when they want to end a friendship or relationship but
don’t want to have a hard conversation.
52 Actress Jenny Mollen once ignored someone to avoid an embarrassing talk. But while it may
feel easier for the person doing it, it can really hurt the one left behind, making them feel sad, confused, or angry.
Some experts worry that people today are getting worse at dealing with difficult conversations. Psychologist
Sarah Konrath found that young people today are less likely to consider others’ feelings than those in the 1970s.
53
But face-to-face conversations are important! When we talk in person, we can see each other’s faces, hear
each other’s voices, and understand feelings better. 54 A doctor named Alex Lickerman says that
breaking up or having arguments in person is difficult, but it often leads to better results.
Ignoring avoids problems instead of solving them. 55 Have you ignored someone Do you think
it’s a good way to end a friendship
A.Have you ever been ignored
B.Hard conversations can help people grow and learn.
C.Sometimes people just need some time alone to think.
D.This might be because we text more and talk face-to-face less.
E.Ignoring might seem easy because you don’t have to explain yourself.
F.It happens when someone suddenly stops talking to you without explanation.

On September 29th, 2024, 80-year-old Lu Shengmei received the title (称号) of People’s Health Worker.
Lu has spent her life helping people in Jiaxian County, Shaanxi Province. She worked hard to make
childbirth safer and help more babies live. She started the first independent pediatrics department (儿科) at Jiaxian
People’s Hospital. The department has trained over 50 doctors and nurses of pediatrics.
In 1968, Lu, then 24, came to Jiaxian County after graduating from one of the top medical schools in
Beijing. Back then, she had to work in the hospital which was just two old cave dwellings (窑洞) and use water
from the nearby rivers. But what worried her most were the dangerous ways people delivered (分娩) babies and the
difficulties faced by expectant mothers (准母亲) and new babies there.
One time, Lu saw a woman giving birth on a sandbag, and her family pulled her hair to keep her awake.
Another villager was about to cut the baby’s cord (脐带) with a pair of dirty scissors. Lu quickly used clean tools
to help. Then, she decided to stay in Jiaxian County to teach modern delivery ways to villagers there.
After stopping working in the hospital, she continued to provide free medical advice for people as a
volunteer and formed a local volunteer association. “I see myself as a kite, and whenever patients in need pull on
the string (线), I quickly fly to their direction,” she said.
