Over the years, as I dealt with the pressure of finishing my Ph. D. and starting my post-doctor, I had grown more competitive. I pushed myself to be t ho first to generate thrilling results and to publish in high-impact journals. Those who could have been collaborators (合作者) became rivals I hated.
But the effect of this competitive character was exactly the opposite of what I had hoped for. When I encountered scientific problems, I thought I had to solve them myself instead of asking for help. The pressure became overwhelming. I began to feel alone and lost. I became less and less productive.
I emailed my mentors (导师), explaining that I had put myself second and the job first for too long. They told me that I wasn’t the first academic to feel that way, and that I wouldn’t be the last. They agreed that I should take the time I needed to take care of myself. So, with my mentors’ support and an uncertain future, I left.
Back home, I spent time with family and friends and opened up about my struggles. At first, I was ashamed. But the more I talked about my demons, the more other people told me about their own. I also started to receive emails from my workmates. After a few lines asking how I was, many expressed worries about how they were managing the stress of academic life. Vulnerable (脆弱的) researchers were poking their heads out of their shells. Our relationships deepened. I began to feel less alone.
Three months later, I was prepared to go back to the science that I loved, and I now had a foundation to be more open with my colleagues. I understood that we all struggle sometimes, and that collaboration can be more powerful than competition.
With a bit of time, collaboration has replaced competition. Working with others and seeking help doesn’t weaken my value or contributions; it means we can all win. I no longer feel lonely and unhappy.
4. How did the author feel after adopting a competitive approach
A. Empowered and successful. B. Overwhelmed and isolated.
C. Motivated and productive. D. Ashamed and annoyed.
5. Why did the writer take a break
A. He was always the last. B. He needed some time to readjust.
C. He got serious homesick. D. He failed to care about himself.
6. What does the underlined phrase mean
A. Trying to be open with others. B. Starting to walk out regularly.
C. Being more confident in research. D. Tending to be happier than ever.
7. Which can be the most suitable title for the passage
A. From competition to cooperation B. From selfishness to selflessness
C. From problems to solutions D. From uncertainty to certainty
C
A group of researchers studying the behavior of Amur tigers, also known as Siberian tigers, have found that they have different “personality” types that help them survive and raise their baby tigers.
According to the previous investigation, Amur tigers are definitely the largest cuts in the world. They live in vast forests in wildness areas of eastern Russia and in protected areas of northern China. There are about 400 of these tigers left in the wild, although there are probably hundreds more living in zoos or reserves.
The researchers based the study on a human test called “The Big Five”, which scores people on five personality features. They asked feeders working with 248 cats in two shelters to spy on the tigers and give an account of their personalities. The results divided the tigers into two groups, which the researchers described as having either “majesty” or “steadiness”. Tigers in the majesty category were those that appeared “dignified (高贵的) and ambitious”. The tigers in the steadiness category were “sincere and tolerant”.
Majestic tigers had a higher social status, spent more time hunting live animals, and mated and ate more. The steady tigers seemed gentler and loving toward one another. Rosalind Arden, co-author of the study, said, “It’s pleasant to see that you don’t have to be dominant, fierce, competitive, and aggressive in order to succeed as a tiger, which doesn’t correspond with people’s traditional insights into tigers.”
There were female and male tigers in both categories. In fact, female Amur tigers are rare and feel exhausted after giving birth to baby tigers so that fathers often help raise the baby tigers. Having a steady personality, especially for male ones, could play a significant role in the relatively long amount of time — two to three years — that baby tigers stay with their parents. The researchers say both personalities have advantages that help the tigers survive threats, including loss of habitat and hunting. The team hopes the study will encourage more support from all walks of life in a bid to guarantee the tigers’ conservation.
8. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2
A. To justify an argument.
B. To add background information.
C. To summarize the previous paragraph.
D. To introduce a new topic for discussion.
9. The researchers conducted the study on Amur tigers by
A. categorizing them for inspection
B. scoring them on 5 personality features
C. doing comparison experiments in the lab
D. observing them through a personality test
10. What does Rosalind Arden think of their findings
A. They improve Amur tigers’ welfare.
B. They change the tigers’ living conditions.
C. They help the reproduction of Amur tigers.
D. They contradict traditional ideas about tigers.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Few sex-related differences exist in tigers’ personalities.
B. A steady personality decreases tigers’ chance of survival.
C. Greater conservation efforts have been made due to the study.
D. Personality types of baby tigers are influenced by their parents.
D
Faced with an attempt by a new chatbot to imitate (模仿) his own songs, the musician Nick Cave delivered a strong response: it was “an absolutely horrible attempt”. He understood that AI was in its babyhood, but could only conclude that the true horror might be that “it will forever be in its babyhood”. While a robot might one day be able to create a song, he wrote, it would never grow beyond “a kind of burlesque (滑稽的模仿)”, because robots-being composed of data-are unable to suffer, while songs arise out of suffering.
Fans of Cave and his band will agree that his music is inimitable, but that doesn’t mean they would necessarily be able to tell the difference. A few days before Cave’s remarks, experts were asked to distinguish between four genuine artworks and their AI imitations. Their conclusions were wrong five times out of 12, and they were only unitedly right in one of the four picture comparisons.
These are party games, but they point to an unfolding challenge that must be managed as a matter of urgency because, like it or not, AI art is upon us. The arrival of the human-impersonating ChatGPT might have increased general awareness, but artists across a wide range of disciplines are already exploring its potential, with the dancer Wayne McGregor and London’s Young Vic Theatre among those who have created AI-based works.
A strongly-worded report from Communications and Digital Committee (CDC) issued a wake-up call to the government, urging it to raise its game in educating future generations of tech-savvy professionals, and tackling key regulatory challenges. These included reviewing reforms to intellectual property law, strengthening the rights of performers and artists, and taking action to support the creative sector in adapting to the disturbances caused by swift and stormy technological change.
While developing AI is important, it should not be pursued at all costs, the CDC stressed. It deplored the failure of the Department for Digital, Culture, and Media to offer a defence against proposed changes to intellectual property law that would give copyright exemption (版权豁免) to any work, anywhere in the world, involving AI text and data mining.
The challenges of AI are both philosophical, as Cave suggested, and practical. They will unfold over the short and long term. State-of-the-art creative industries have a key role to play in shaping and exploring the philosophical ones, but they must have the practical help they require to survive and be successful. They need it now.
12. Why does the author mention the four picture comparisons in Paragraph 2
A. To stress the similarities between AI art and human art.
B. To argue that human art will be replaced by AI art.
C. To prove AI is stretching the boundaries of art.
D. To imply AI art cannot be underestimated.
13. What does the underlined word “deplored” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Clearly analyzed. B. Bravely suffered.
C. Strongly criticized. D. Accurately perceived.
14. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Some artists see AI as a tool even though it is a threat.
B. Creative industries are responsible for causing the AI problem.
C. Tech professionals need more training to better understand AI art.
D. The quality of AI art dismisses concerns about intellectual property.
15. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. The Creative Thief: AI Makes Perfect Art
B. AI in Art: A Battle That Must Be Fought
C. Threat or Opportunity: The Impact of AI on Art
D. The Rise of AI Art: What It Means to Human Artists

57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was never a question whether or not my mother loved me — it was a given, the cornerstone of my life that shaped everything about who I was.
However, I’m not sure about my father’s love. There are photographs of us laughing together, with me in diapers when I was a baby. I’ve watched recordings of my older sister and me lining up in turns for my father to hold and toss us into the air — all three of us shrieking (尖叫) with delight.
Did I love him then
I feel I must have loved him because the film says so — the infant child is laughing, and she is embracing the man beside her. When I turn off the tape to search my own childhood for proof of my father’s love, and proof that we shared something like love, there is one impressive memory I can name.
At some point during my first year of school, I peed (尿湿了) my pants in class. I was sent to the school nurse for a change of clothes, and for the rest of the day, I wore a pair of over-large, bright orange sweat pants. I remember exactly how the teacher looked at me and exactly what the other students said, but they were the least of my worries.
I was in terror at the thought of showing up at home with different pants.
All afternoon I planned how I would enter the house very quietly and run to my room before my father even noticed I was there. During the entire bus ride home I rehearsed (默默练习) again and again the plan I had in mind that would allow me to escape my father’s wrath (盛怒) and his triangle eyes.
Triangle eyes. This was the name my sister Shira and I used to use whenever my father’s eyes would tense up into two hard triangles, with the calm of his face having fled away in a flash of anger. Their appearance was sudden and unpredictable, ignited by a poor exam score from Shira, or when I burnt the bread in the toaster. He’d point out the door and yell, “Get out!”
Who knew what peeing pants in class would get you.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
So I carefully planned to avoid his notice, but the plan backfired.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
So I carefully planned to avoid his notice, but the plan backfired.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Everything he did told me that HE LOVED ME!
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
So I carefully planned to avoid his notice, but the plan backfired. I paused too long at the front door to check for my father. When he yelled out “Hello ”, I promptly bolted into the coat closet. I hid there in the dark until my dad found me in the long-standing pants, and I had no choice but to tell him. Then my father did something very kind and very strange. He reached out for me and gently patted my head — or was it my shoulder Maybe my arm My father took the satisfied pants, still stuffed in a plastic bag from school. He put the pants in the laundry and said he was glad I was Okay.
Everything he did told me that HE LOVED ME! And as I remember that moment, I want to scream through the hallway of time: “That’s it! Look! He loves you!” I want to reach toward the little girl staring down at her feet, the girl who is so relieved to have not upset her father yet again but who is nonetheless still afraid to meet his eyes. I want to raise her head so she can see what her father’s face looks like when he loves her, to lift up her eyes and know it is okay to be loved.
