Need a pick-me-up Try a park-me-up. A study by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham finds that spending 20 minutes at a park or green space makes the average person happier.
What's more, it didn't matter whether you were sitting in a long seat just passing the time or playing games with a friend. People felt happier whether they exercised at the park or not.
“In general, we found park visitors reported an improvement in emotional well-being(情绪健康) after the park visit,” says Dr. Hon K. Yuen, a professor at UAB. However, we did not find levels of physical activity are related(有关系的) to improving emotional well-being. Instead, we found time spent at the park is related to improving emotional well-being.
Researchers say that city parks provide city people with chances to experience nature and take part in many kinds of activities. Also, parks allow visitors to experience physical and emotional health benefits like stress reduction.
For the study, the researchers chose 94 volunteers to visit three city parks in Mountain Brook, Alabama: Overton, Jemison, and Cahaba River Walk Parks. The locations were chosen because they were three main public parks in Mountain Brook and each had a large number of visitors every day.
Although the number of volunteers taking part in the study was small, the positive results among them still showed just how important green spaces are, especially in cities.

六、任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Tanghulu, a beloved traditional Chinese snack, has a fascinating origin. It's said that during the Song Dynasty, a wife of Emperor Guangzong of Song was seriously ill. A doctor asked her to eat hawthorns(山楂) on bamboo sticks boiled in syrup(糖浆). Surprisingly, the wife got better. This method then spread among the people, giving birth to the tanghulu we know today.
Making tanghulu is an art. First, pick fresh, big and round fruits like hawthorns, strawberries, oranges or grapes. Wash and dry them, then thread(穿成串) them onto bamboo sticks. Next, make the syrup. Finally, dip the fruit - strung sticks into the syrup, and put them on a plate to cool.
The taste of tanghulu is truly special. The outer sugar coating is really crispy while the inner fruit is juicy, offering a blend of sweet-and-sour flavor.
In modern times, tanghulu production has seen some changes. Machine-made production makes it easier to make tanghulu in large numbers. Vacuum-packing(真空包装) can make it stay fresh longer. Also, there are a lot of new ideas. New tastes like chocolate-covered tanghulu or ones with nuts on top have appeared. They are also made into lovely shapes to draw in young buyers.
Let's look forward to more wonderful creations of this traditional snack in the future.
