A couple of years ago I graduated from art school. After graduation I was unsure of what to do with my degree. I had majored in Illustration (插画专业) and loved it, but didn't really feel interested in doing illustrations for any companies. This left me with few options other than freelance (自由职业的) jobs and nannying.
I spent two years working as a nanny doing freelance illustrations on the side. It just wasn't quite enough to pay rent, but I loved it, so I worked well over 50 hours a week, trying to keep up with both.
Just under a year ago I went to a friend's wedding. I couldn't think of a gift for them and really didn't have a lot of money to spare so I used my talents to create a portrait for them. It wasn't much, but I hoped it would be a good gift. When I handed the portrait to them and they unwrapped it, the looks on their faces were something I did not expect. There were joyful tears in their eyes as they cried, "That's us! This is so beautiful!"
It's funny because when I was in art school my least favourite portraits were always assignments. I hated drawing people and was always so much more interested in drawing little furry creatures. Once I saw the looks on my friends' faces after giving them their portrait, it was all over. I suddenly loved portraits and wanted to do more.
I now take portraits to every wedding I go to and have given them as gifts to the families I nannied for. Every time the reaction makes all of the hard work and time I put into them so worth it.
I've just started offering couple, family and pet portraits as an item on my Etsy shop.
24. What did the author choose to do after graduation
A. Draw portraits. B. Draw furry creatures.
C. Do illustrations for a company. D. Work as a nanny and a freelancer.
25. Why did the author decide to draw a portrait for her friends as a wedding present
A. She thought it meaningful.
B. She was fond of drawing people.
C. Her friends requested her to do so.
D. She didn't have enough money to buy a gift.
26. How did the friends feel when receiving their portrait
A. Delighted. B. Disappointed. C. Embarrassed. D. Shocked.
27. What may be the best title for the passage
A. A Gift Turned into My Career. B. I Sacrificed a Lot for My Job.
C. Your Major Is Your Future Career. D. Success Belongs to the Persistent One.
C
By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare time, though, he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova—not as a musician but as her page turner. "I love music, but I'm not a trained musician. I've learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance."
Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group's official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn't have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.
"A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don't turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot." Mr Titterton explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of "nodding" to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.
But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. "I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand," Mr Titterton said, "Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back."
Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage.
"My husband is the worst page turner," she laughed. "He's interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: 'Turn, turn!' Robert is the best page turner I've had in my entire life."
28. What should Titterton be able to do to be a page turner
A. Read music. B. Play the piano.
C. Sing songs. D. Fix the instruments.
29. Which of the following best describes Titterton's job on stage
A. Boring. B. Well-paid.
C. Demanding. D. Dangerous.
30. What does Titterton need to practise
A. Counting the pages. B. Recognizing the "nodding".
C. Catching falling objects. D. Performing in his own style.
31. Why is Ms Raspopova's husband "the worse page turner"
A. He has very poor eyesight. B. He ignores the audience.
C. He has no interest in music. D. He forgets to do his job.

Reading poems is not exactly an everyday activity for most people. In fact, many people never read a poem once they get out of high school.
It is worth reminding ourselves that this has not always been the case in America. In the 19th century, a usual American activity was to sit around the fireside in the evening and read poems aloud. It is true that there was no television, movie theatres, or the World Wide Web to provide diversion at the time. However, poems were a source of pleasure, of self-education and of a connection to other people or to the world beyond one's own community. Reading them was a social act as well as an individual one, and perhaps even more social than individual. Writing poems to share with friends and relations was, like reading poems by the fireside, another way in which poetry had a place in everyday life.
How did things change Why are most Americans no longer comfortable with poetry, and why do most people today think that poems have nothing to tell them and that they can do well without poems
There are, I believe, three factors: poets, teachers, and we ourselves. Of these, the least important is the third. The world surrounding the poem has betrayed us more than we have betrayed the poem. Early in the 20th century, poetry in English headed into directions unfavourable to the reading of poetry. Readers decided that poems were not for the fireside or the easy chair at night, and that they belonged where other difficult-to-read things belonged.
Poets failed the reader, and so did teachers. They want their students to know something about the skills of a poem, and they want their students to see that poems mean something. Yet what usually occurs when teachers push these points on their high school students is that young people decide poems are unpleasant crossword puzzles.
32. What does the underlined word "diversion" in Para. 2 most probably mean
A. Concentration. B. Change. C. Communication. D. Amusement.
33. Why was reading poems thought to be a social act in the 19th century
A. It was a source of pleasure. B. It helped unite a community.
C. It built a link among people. D. It was a source of self-education.
34. According to the passage, what is the main cause of the great gap between readers and poetry
A. Poems have become difficult to understand.
B. Students are poorly educated in high school.
C. Poets are becoming less interested in poetry.
D. TV and the Internet are more attractive than poetry.
35. What does the writer question in the last paragraph
A. The difficulty in studying poems. B. Students' wrong ideas about poetry.
C. The way poems are taught in school. D. The techniques used in writing poems.

Every night she would check the patients with her lamp.
When she returned home after the war, a fund had been set up in her honour. Many of the soldiers she had made contributions (捐款). Now she could set up the Nightingale Training School in London.

Having just graduated from high school, I was 18 and living with my parents in Denver, Colorado. That summer I decided to take my most daring trip ever. I wanted to go to Utah to visit a dear friend I'd known for four years. My father had given me a small street motorcycle as a graduation present, and I worked out a plan to ride it to Utah.
I was to get an early start, ride all day, and arrive at my destination (Paradise, Utah) that evening. Arriving in Ogden, Utah in the late afternoon, I looked at my map for another route to save time. A small line on the map indicated an unimproved road heading northeast-straight to the little town of Paradise!
Of course I headed for it. The road quickly became single, dirty lane, winding through fields. As long as it was dry, surely I'd be OK. Suddenly, I lost control of the motorcycle and it fell over. I didn't get hurt because wasn't going fast, but I was puzzled and couldn't figure out what had happened.
It was dark. While my headlight showed me where the road was, I couldn't tell its condition, only that it was smooth. I started again, and once more fell over after a few feet. I looked around and found myself alone in a high mountain field. For the first time during the trip I started to get worried. A few minutes later I couldn't believe what I saw-a pair of headlights bouncing along the road toward me, coming from the direction I was heading for!
The man driving the small truck stopped and asked if I needed any help. Not the type to bother others with my problems, I said I thought I could get where I was going on my own, but thanked him for the offer.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

He explained the problem—a rain had fallen during the day.

第二节
答案:
He explained the problem—a rain had fallen during the day. I then realized why the road was so slippery and muddy. After another unsuccessful attempt I finally accepted his help, and we loaded the motorcycle into the back of his truck. He turned around and took me back in the direction he came from. He asked me where I was going and I told him I was going to visit a friend in Paradise. It happened that he had planned to go back to Paradise that evening.
I asked him why he was out there in the field at such a late hour. He told me he was a road man. He had a feeling that he needed to go down the road, but wasn't sure why. Then he found me. It took us the better part of an hour to make it to the next paved road. All the while I was amazed that he was able and willing to be there. He was so kind that he drove me to my friend's home, which made me less worried. I will always be grateful to him for going out of his way on a dark night to the middle of nowhere to help me.
