第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
The first great agricultural revolution happened about 12,000 years ago, when humans settled on farms. The second, also recognized as the British Agricultural Revolution, took place first in England in the 17th and early 18th centuries. The third was the "green revolution" beginning in the mid-20thcentury, in which advances in fertilization, mechanization, and irrigation dramatically increased global food production. The fourth is likely to come from informatization, as digital technology and big data help farmers make better decisions and step up crop production.
Michael Stern, president and chief executive officer of the Climate Corporation, said that the ability to gather detailed information about farmers' fields, combined with advances in weather forecasts, computing power, and artificial intelligence, will change farming from a business that often reacts to the past to one that uses real-time data and weather forecasts to make more accurate decisions for the season to come.
Over the course of a growing season, farmers make 40 to 50 key decisions that affect crop performance. Recent trends that have swept other areas of society—such as cheap data storage and dramatic increases in computing power—have the potential to change the farm.
Stern offered the example of a farmer who delayed the regular fall fertilization of his fields after being informed of a coming storm. That decision reduced fertilizer runoff, kept fertilizer on the fields, and helped control the farmer's costs. As data is gathered season after season, computer models will help farmers optimize production
Remote sensing (遥感) is another way that modern technology can help farmers know what's going on in their fields. Many farmers drive around to monitor growth and watch for pests and diseases. But these surveys are typically random and don't cover more than 2 percent of a field. Remote sensing can provide accurate data that covers an entire field and provide specific recommendations based on the situation in the stricken area.
21. What may the fourth agricultural revolution help farmers do in the future
A. Deal with big data.
B. Grasp the computing ability.
C. Make reasonable decisions.
D. Develop business potentials.
22. Why did the author give an example in Paragraph 4 according to the text
A. To confirm the coming of a storm.
B. To explain the reason for fertilizer runoff.
C. To stress the importance of fertilization.
D. To show the use of computer models.
23. What is the author's attitude to the coming agricultural revolution
A. Opposed. B. Objective. C. Positive. D. Unclear.

On February 6, 2020, American astronaut Christina Koch arrived back on Earth after 328 days in space. Her time in space is just one of the records set by herself. That's the longest spaceflight ever made by a woman, and just one of the many things Ms. Koch achieved in space.
Ms. Koch took off from Earth for the International Space Station (ISS) on March 12, 2019. While in space, she made 5,248 trips around the Earth, travelling 2,237 million kilometers, which is roughly the same as 291 trips to the Moon and back. During her 11 months on the ISS, Ms. Koch took part in six spacewalks, spending over 42 hours in all outside the station. In October of 2019, Ms. Koch led the first ever all-female spacewalk with Jessica Meir.
But for most astronauts, space travel isn't about setting records. It's about doing science. Ms. Koch took part in a wide variety of special experiments, including studying how crystals (晶体) grow in space, how atoms (原子) behave in extreme cold and learning more about growing plants in low gravity. Growing plants in space could be an important way to provide food on future trips. She also tested a new way of separating liquids from gases. This experiment could lead to simple methods of cleaning water and air in space, which could be very important for future space travel.
Ms. Koch isn't just a scientist and an astronaut. She is also being studied. She's part of a NASA program studying how astronauts are affected by being in space for long periods of time. Her trip was only 12 days shorter than the American record set by Scott Kelly in 2016. As they did with Mr. Kelly, NASA scientists are looking carefully at ways Ms. Koch's body has been affected by her time in space. That research is important for the longer space trips NASA hopes to make in the future, such as for a base on the moon or a trip to Mars.
24. Which of the following is an achievement Ms. Koch has made
A. Making the longest spaceflight by herself.
B. Leading the first women-only spacewalk.
C. Cleaning water and air successfully in space.
D. Staying outside the ISS continuously for 42 hours.
25. What does the author want to tell us with so many detailed figures in Paragraph 2
A. Koch made historic breakthroughs in space.
B. Koch went through a life-threatening space trip.
C. Koch completed admirable tasks in space travel.
D. Koch is the most experienced astronaut in NASA.
26. Which statement agrees with the text
A. Astronauts are competing to set new records.
B. Koch's team produced their own food in space.
C. NASA has founded a scientific base on the moon.
D. Koch's research is significant for space exploration.
27. What could be the best title for the text
A. Record-Setting Astronaut Koch Returns to Earth.
B. US Astronauts Carried out Experiments in Space.
C. Spacewalks Have Successfully Been Done on the ISS.
D. NASA is Studying Astronauts for Longer Space Trips.
C
When we moved into our home in Maui, Hawaii, 16 years ago, one good thing about this house was the huge avocado (牛油果) tree growing in the backyard.
This tree gave the most delicious avocados I have ever tasted. I lived on these avocados when nursing my first child. Fresh avocado was the very first food for my kids. This tree was so huge that it cast a massive shadow over our backyard. It was truly our magical tree.
Until one day, someone from the Health Department came to tell us that our avocado tree was too large and needed trimming (修剪). In New York, you get in trouble if you don't clear the snow off your sidewalk. Here, it's when your trees are too high. So along came the trimmer, leaving just the trunk and a few branches. I was sad. The kids were all sad. Some friends who knew it would say, "It's going to grow back. Your next avocados will be crazy!" Yeah, whatever. The tree is gone, so stop doing that. It just didn't work.
But a few days later, I noticed some unusual butterflies flying around the yard. And then, the sun came in the kitchen, creating this pleasant warmth once blocked by the huge tree. After about a month, I started to notice some tiny green shoots coming out of the cut branches, which eventually turned into full-on bright green leaves.
I started to feel like all was going to be fine, kind of like life. Little do we know what seems really difficult is actually life's way of making us stronger. It's life's way of bringing in the butterflies, the sunshine, and the delightful flowers. We all know that saying, "It will be OK in the end. If it's not, it's not the end."
28. What is mainly conveyed in paragraph 2 about the avocado tree
A. Her kids' love for it. B. Its fruit's good taste.
C. Her expectation of it. D. Its benefits for her family.
29. Why did the author's friends say the words in paragraph 3
A. To laugh at her. B. To cheer her up.
C. To show their regret. D. To express their excitement.
30. What happened to the avocado tree in the end
A. It had no branches. B. It blocked the sunshine.
C. It was full of life again. D. It bore more avocados.
31. What message does the author seem to convey in the text
A. You harvest what you sow.
B. Luck and Misfortune comes in turn.
C. Success won't come unless you go to it.
D. The important thing in life is to have a dream.

Preparing Cities for Robot Cars
The possibility of self-driving robot cars has often seemed like a futurist's dream, years away from materializing in the real world. Well, the future is apparently now. The California Department of Motor Vehicles began giving permits in April for companies to test truly self-driving cars on public roads. The state also cleared the way for companies to sell or rent out self-driving cars, and for companies to operate driverless taxi services. California, it should be noted, isn't leading the way panies have been testing their vehicles in cities across the country. It's hard to predict when driverless cars will be everywhere on our roads. But however long it takes, the technology has the potential to change our transportation systems and our cities, for better or for worse, depending on how the transformation is regulated.
While much of the debate so far has been focused on the safety of driverless cars (and rightfully so), policymakers also should be talking about how self-driving vehicles can help reduce traffic jams, cut emissions (排放) and offer more convenient, affordable mobility options. The arrival of driverless vehicles is a chance to make sure that those vehicles are environmentally friendly and more shared.
Do we want to copy—or even worsen—the traffic of today with driverless cars Imagine a future where most adults own individual self-driving vehicles. They tolerate long, slow journeys to and from work on packed highways because they can work, entertain themselves or sleep on the ride, which encourages urban spread. They take their driverless car to an appointment and set the empty vehicle to circle the building to avoid paying for parking. Instead of walking a few blocks to pick up a child or the dry cleaning, they send the self-driving minibus. The convenience even leads fewer people to take public transport—an unwelcome side effect researchers have already found in ride-hailing (叫车) services.
A study from the University of California at Davis suggested that replacing petrol-powered private cars worldwide with electric, self-driving and shared systems could reduce carbon emissions from transportation 80% and cut the cost of transportation infrastructure (基础设施) and operations 40% by 2050. Fewer emissions and cheaper travel sound pretty appealing. The first commercially available driverless cars will almost certainly be fielded by ride-hailing services, considering the cost of self-driving technology as well as liability and maintenance issues (责任与维护问题). But driverless car ownership could increase as the prices drop and more people become comfortable with the technology.
Policymakers should start thinking now about how to make sure the appearance of driverless vehicles doesn't extend the worst aspects of the car-controlled transportation system we have today. The coming technological advancement presents a chance for cities and states to develop transportation systems designed to move more people, and more affordably. The car of the future is coming. We just have to plan for it.
32. According to the author, attention should be paid to how driverless cars can _______.
A. help deal with transportation-related problems
B. provide better services to customers
C. cause damage to our environment
D. make some people lose jobs
33. As for driverless cars, what is the author's major concern
A. Safety. B. Side effects. C. Affordability. D. Management.
34. What does the underlined word "fielded" in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Employed. B. Replaced. C. Shared. D. Reduced.
35. What is the author's attitude to the future of self-driving cars
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Disapproving. D. Sympathetic.

How to stop technology addiction
Research suggests that at least 64% of people now spend up to four hours daily of spare time in front of a screen. Just as TV watching has been linked to higher chances of being fat and getting diseases, this extra sedentary (久坐不动的) time is bad news for our health. 36
Choose outdoor activities over technology
When you're at home, make it a rule that you can't be online if the sun is shining. 37 Then, after taking these healthy physical activities, you can take out your phone or laptop, or take a seat at the computer. This rule should be fit for everyone in your family.
Limit social media use
According to some experts, the effect of technology on human relationships is worrying as technology has become a substitute for face-to-face human relationships. And social networks have changed computer and mobile use for people of all ages. 38 Avoid aimless browsing (浏览) and give your time online a purpose: research holidays or catch up on the news of the day. Then log off. 39 .Challenge yourself to read at least 30 pages of a great book before you check your computer or mobile phone. Pick the right reading material and you'll soon find you've discovered
an enjoyable pastime.
Create projects for yourself
It's amazing how much you can achieve when you're not glued to (全神贯注地看) a screen. 40 Some suggestions are organizing the book shelf and cleaning your bedroom. Then try to do one each evening.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Having held the inter-school storytelling championship for the past two years, I was the shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.
Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly emerge as the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited (自负的). I was so proud that I neglected the importance of practicing for the contest.
A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, "Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse (排练) for the contest " She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. "Just imagine you are on the stage in the presence of the audience," she added.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Sara," I replied. "I have a bit of a sore throat."
This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my script. I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and thought everything would go well.
The contest was held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was packed. My schoolteachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.
注意:续写词数应为150 左右。
Paragraph 1:
Soon, it was my turn to talk.

As you have probably seen already, this is a lively area with restaurants and shops and cafes. During our one-hour tour you'll see a number of houseboats. People can pay millions of dollars for the biggest of these. Some of them are quite amazing and have two or three floors. My own is one of the smallest boats, but I still have plenty of room, as you'll see when I show you around. My living area includes one bedroom with a bathroom, a kitchen and a living room. I also have electricity, running water and network, so I really do have everything I need. You may be interested to know that I'm writing a book on the history of houseboats in the city, and this should be on sale from early July. Well, thank you for listening so far. Now let's move into the boat and start the tour.

第二节
答案:
Soon, it was my turn to talk. Facing the crowd, I found myself really nervous. I spoke with an expressionless face and even stuttered a few times as I forgot parts of the story. My legs trembled and so did my voice. On seeing my terrible performance, the judges shook their heads. The supporters from my school looked at me in disappointment. I had never been so embarrassed in my life. In the end I walked off the stage, and my eyes filled with tears.
Finally , results were announced after the contest. I did not win any prizes. It was not surprising at all. I felt ashamed when 1 faced my classmates and, of course, Ms. Sara. I regretted underestimating my opponents and overestimating myself. My vanity had cost me the championship. I learned my lesson well and finally understood the meaning of the two sayings "Pride goes before a fall." and "Practice makes perfect!"
