rainforest.

Every time you charge your cell phone, you are benefiting from John Goodenough's exceptional
creativity. After being told that most scientists make their major discoveries long before they hit middle
age,Goodenough just set off to develop a battery technology that has made our modern life possible.
Lithium()batteries had been invented before. But Goodenough's invention was a new kind of
lithium battery that can store enough energy to power all sorts of electronics and is light and small
enough to make them portable().And,even better, such a battery would charge and recharge
in a matter of minutes-all without exploding.
Born in Jena,Germany in 1922,Goodenough grew up in the United States and majored in
mathematics at Yale University and earned a Ph.D in physics from the University of Chicago. He began

With the strength of purpose, Lily called together her classmates. She told them what she saw in
the deserted garden. “I intend to turn the place into a beautiful garden, but I badly need your support.
Let's work together to create a better community,” she said. Soon these youngsters joined her in
rebuilding the garden. Armed with tools, they worked tirelessly in the garden on weekends. They
grew trees along the dirt paths and flowers and vegetables in the open space. As the seasons changed,
the garden was becoming more and more amazing.
As days passed, word about Lily's project spread around the town. More teenagers joined in the
project and contributed to the garden. The locals came to admire the garden which had been so
lifeless. People were surprised that a group of teenagers could make such a significant difference.
The garden became a symbol of hope in the community. As a result, Lily became well-known around
the town. Walking in the garden, Lily smiled, knowing that she was helping to make the world a
brighter and more beautiful place for all.
