Passage 6
The largest animal ever to live on Earth is the blue whale. It weighs about 80 tons—more
than 24 big elephants. It is more than 30 meters long. A new baby whale weighs as much as a big
elephant.
Cats won’t die if they fall off very high places because they can turn themselves up the

love for up to three years until the female elephant takes his love. They often show their love by
touching each other’s body.
Usually, wolves do not hurt people. For years a Canadian newspaper says that they would

could do that. Wolves do not usually go together though they may do this in winter and they only
hurt people at an unusual time.

Passage 7
Shirley, an elephant, has something to say. She opens her mouth and speaks. The nearby
elephants understand the sound, but it is just noise to me.
What is Shirley exactly saying Scientists are not sure, but they are trying to find out how
elephants communicate. I visited Shirley at the Elephant Sanctuary (避 难 所 ) in Hohenwald,
Tennessee. The sanctuary is home of Shirley and five other elephants —Bunny, Jenny, Sissy,
Tarra and Winkie. All six animals were once in zoos or circuses (马戏团). Now they walk freely
in the forests.
A noisy group
Not all the elephants speak like Shirley. Tarra speaks like a sea lion when she is happy.
Bunny squeaks (吱吱叫) often. I soon get used to hearing the different voices of the elephants.
When one gray giant comes close to me, I know which elephant it is.
Elephants also communicate in a way that people can’t hear. Scientists believe that elephant’s
sound can travel for miles. Elephants in a group use it to keep in touch when they are alone.
Old friends
The elephants speak to one another for the same reasons people talk. Sometimes they
even shout with excitement. When Shirley first came to the sanctuary, Jenny looked at her and
began to shout. Shirley shouted back. At first, the animal keepers had no idea what it was about.
Later, they discovered that Shirley and Jenny had stayed together for 20 years earlier in a circus.
They still knew each other.

kept in cages or held by chains(铁链). All that was holding them back from running away from
the camp was a small piece of rope, it was just tied to one of their legs.
As the man looked at the elephants, he couldn’t understand it. Why didn’t the elephants just
use their strength to break the rope and run away from the camp They could easily make it, but
instead, they didn’t try at all. Then, he asked a trainer nearby why it was so.
“When they were very young and much smaller, we used the same size of rope to tie them,
and at that age, it was enough to hold them. As they grew up, they still believed that they couldn’t
break away.”
“They believed the rope could still hold them, so they never tried to break free.” the trainer
answered. The man was in silence. These animals could have broken free whenever they wanted,
but it was just because over time, they had the belief that it just wasn’t possible.
How many of us go through life like the elephants—holding onto the belief that we cannot

Passage 12
I was careful to behave as well as possible, hoping the King would give me freedom early.
Lilliputians soon began to lose their fear of me. They called me Man-Mountain. Sometimes I lay
down and let them dance on my hand, and from time to time children came to play games in my
hair. By now I was able to speak their language well.
One day the King invited me to watch their regular activities. I was most interested in the
rope-dancing. A very thin rope was fixed (固定) about thirty centimeters above the ground. People
who wanted to become the King’s officers jumped and danced on this rope, and who ever jumped
highest without a miss got the best job. There was another interesting activity. The King held a
stick in front of him, and moved it up and down from time to time. One by one, people came up to
him and jumped over the stick or crawled (爬) under it. They went on jumping and crawling as the
King moved the stick. The winner, who jumped and crawled for the longest time, received a blue
ribbon (绶带) to wear round his waist. The second received a red ribbon, and the third got a green
one. I had certainly never seen such activities in any of the countries I had visited before.
Some days later the King agreed that I didn’t need to be a prisoner any longer. However, I
had to promise (承诺) certain things before I was set free:
to be careful not to step on any Lilliputians or their animals
to help the Lilliputians in war till they win peace (和平)
to stay in Lilliput until the King allowed me to leave
I agreed to everything at once. I was free at last!
Several weeks after my visit to the country, I was visited by one of the King’s most
important officers. His name was Reldresal, and he had helped me many times since I had arrived
in Lilliput.
“Well, my friend,” he said, “Lilliput has enemies (敌人) both at home and abroad. At home
we have two political groups, the High-Heels and the Low-Heels. The two groups hate each other.
As the present King and his officers are all Low-Heels, they refuse to speak to High-Heels. That’s
the problem inside Lilliput. Besides, we’re getting information that the people of Blefusce are
going to attack (攻击) us. Have you heard of Blefusce It’s an island very near us, almost as large
and important as Lilliput. They’ve been at war with us for three years.”

humans. The most famous fables were written by a man called Aesop. There are hundreds of

Fairy tales are usually stories for children, often about magic characters such as fairies and

Passage 8
A man was walking through an elephant camp and found that the elephants weren’t being
kept in cages or held by chains(铁链).
These animals could have broken free whenever they wanted, but it was just because over time, they had the belief that it just wasn’t possible.

friends.

ate lunch. After lunch, Fogg read three newspapers from cover to cover. Then he ate supper. After

same the next day.
But one Wednesday, everything changed. Fogg read some amazing news in his paper.
“Listen to this,” he announced (宣告) to his friends. “It says it’s possible to travel around
the world in only eighty days!”
Although his friends had a laugh over that, Fogg was sure he could do it.
When one friend bet (打 赌 ) that it couldn’t be done, Fogg replied, “I will bet twenty
thousand pounds that I can go around the world in eighty days or less!”
Everyone thought he was crazy but Fogg had made up his mind. “I shall be back on
December 21st,” he said.
As soon as he arrived home, Fogg asked Passepartout, his butler (男管家), to pack a small
bag. Luckily, Passepartout moved very quickly.

pulled out, Fogg and Passepartout were off on their great adventure.

Passage 12
I was careful to behave as well as possible, hoping the King would give me freedom early.
16 / 18
限时训练(八下)
1. Why did Gulliver try to behave as well as he could in Lilliput
A.Because he was called Man-Mountain. B.Because Lilliputians lost their fear of him.
C.Because he wanted to be set free earlier. D.Because he was able to speak their language
well.
