Have you ever found yourself really wanting to change yet somehow remaining stuck in the same patterns The answer might not be in your behaviors, but in your beliefs — specifically, the beliefs you have about yourself and who you are. This is what psychologists call self-concept inertia (惰性).
Self-concept inertia is the psychological resistance to changing our identity. Our self-concept is influenced by our narrative identity, which is made up of the stories we tell about ourselves. These narratives can go beyond simply describing who we are today — they can restrict us from being who we believe we’re capable of becoming in the future. This means that even if we want to change, as long as we hold onto our old identities, we’ll unintentionally resist making the changes we know we need to make to become the “new” version of ourselves.
Our self-concept doesn’t yield easily, even to our conscious desires. When your behaviors contradict your self-image, you experience a state of psychological discomfort. For example, if you’ve always seen yourself as “not a morning person”, successfully waking up at 5 a. m. creates tension with your established identity. So your brain has two options: Update your self-concept (hard) or abandon the new behavior (easier). As Carol Dweck discusses in her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, people with “fixed mindsets” tend to avoid challenges that might contradict their self-concept.
Yet your self-concept is malleable by design. Notice when you use a phrase like “I’m just not a ... person”. The absolute statement signals few changes will happen. Instead of “I’m not an organized person” (identity), try “I haven’t developed strong organizational systems yet” (behavior). Identity statements feel permanent, but behavior statements feel changeable. Identifying these habits also gives you insight into a solution you can practice and improve.
Self-concept inertia(惰性) weakens when we hold our identities lightly. When we see ourselves as works in progress rather than finished products, we create the psychological space needed for genuine transformation. The question isn’t whether you can change — it’s whether you’re willing to let go of familiar limitations to discover what lies beyond them.
28. How does our narrative identity affect us
A. It defines our better future. B. It changes our self-concept.
C. It limits our behaviour choices. D. It improves our previous selves.
29. What does the example of waking up at 5 a.m. illustrate
A. The difficulty in getting rid of tension.
B. The benefits of becoming an early riser.
C. The conflict between behaviour and self-identity.
D. The importance of following a strict daily routine.
30. What does the underlined word “malleable” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Predictable. B. Available. C. Sustainable. D. Adjustable.
31. What does the author advise people to do
A. Make perfect products. B. Avoid labelling yourself
C. Monitor psychological changes. D. Attach importance to self-image.
D
In the video game Space Invaders Extreme 2, a player has to fire weapons to destroy aliens attacking Earth. These aliens move fast, raining down from the top of the screen and claiming a player's “life” if they reach the bottom.
A study in Nature suggests that while destroying digital aliens might seem unrelated to distinguishing between words, such action video games may help children at risk for developmental dyslexia—a genetic language disorder that makes processing words difficult— by improving their ability to perceive spoken words and sounds.
In the study, 79 prereading children with family histories of dyslexia took several language tests, including listening for differences in made-up words—a task that can be challenging for dyslexic people. The kids were then split into four groups. One played Space Invaders Extreme 2, a second played a non-action video game, a third attended speech therapy, and a fourth received no intervention. Gamers played four times a week for 45minutes each over a month and a half, and those in speech therapy attended 45-minute sessions twice weekly over about four months.
By the end of the trial more than 80 percent of the Space Invaders players were significantly better at the word-identification task than before, and they showed greater improvements than any of the other three groups. The researchers aren't sure why scores on the other language tests did not improve notably— but they say that this finding could be valuable. “If we can target these small cognitive functions before children are older and lose some brain plasticity, then perhaps we can treat aspects of dyslexia before they've fully formed,” says Simone Gori, co-author of the study.
Dyslexia often goes untreated in Italy's overburdened public health and school systems, says Marilu Tempini, a behavioral neurologist at the University of California. She hopes to see larger future studies conducted in other languages as well. “Eyes are an extension of the brain,” she says, “so when we play video games, it's directly connected to our cognitive function — and there is so much research potential there.”
32. What do we know about Space Invaders Extreme 2
A. It is regarded as violent.
B. It focuses on the intelligence.
C. It requires fast action.
D. It contains a VR setting.
33. According to Simone Gori, what is the significance of the finding
A. It proves that children with dyslexia can be cured.
B. It offers hope that the public health system in Italy will be improved.
C. It suggests that video games can replace the traditional speech therapy.
D. It indicates that action video games can be used for early intervention of dyslexia.
34. What is Marilu Tempini’ s attitude towards the study
A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Dismissive. D. Conserved.
35. Which of the following might be a suitable title for the text
A. Hidden Secrets Behind Dyslexia Revealed
B. Action Video Games Advance Word Awareness
C. The Most Effective Coping Strategy for Dyslexia
D. Video Games Designed to Improve Cognitive Function

The path to healthy weight combines two key elements. Exercise and eating habits form its foundation. Some believe they demand lots of effort or planning. But that's not true. In fact, the best way to work them into our lives is by making small changes that gradually become part of our routine. 36
Regular Exercise
Teens should get 60+minutes of daily physical activity. 37 All that matters is that each week you get the right balance of activity, including dancing, brisk walking, or stair-climbing. Breaking workouts into 15-minute "exercise snacks"(e. g. , morning yoga, lunchtime walks) throughout the day makes goals more achievable. This strategy avoids burnout while keeping energy steady.
Good Eating Habits
38 Actually, crash diets cause weight rebounds. A 2022 study found 80% of teens regained weight post-diet. Therefore, teens should eat a variety of foods, and there's nothing wrong with the occasional treat. A candy bar somehow beats snapping daily
To build lasting habits, reshape your mindset. 39 When stressed, try brief walks rather than reaching for snacks. Track weekly progress with a checklist—small achievements boost motivation strongly.
In conclusion, creatively design routines blending exercise and nutrition in your own way. 40 _____While others choose gym workouts, you might prefer playing Frisbee with your dog. Knowing what's right for you will make it a lot easier to do!
A. You're all different after all.
B. Independence matters in habit-building.
C. View food as fuel, not emotional comfort.
D. Low-calorie diets ensure steady weight loss.
E. Eating well doesn't mean dieting over and over.
F. It doesn't mean doing tough exercises or hitting the gym.
G. Here's how to make these other healthy habits just as easy.

The sun burned hot over Gudewadi, a small village in Western Maharashtra where the earth smelled of ripe cashew (腰果) and dust. I was the village bad boy because I had no interest in school or studies. Mud on my knees, dirty words on my tongue and a pack of restless troublemakers at my heels, I was the boy mothers warned their sons about. School A prison. Books Useless weight. The only lessons I cared about were what the fields taught: how to climb a cashew tree without being hurt, how to tell when the fruit was sweetest, how to outrun the teacher catching me skipping school again.
No one thought I would do anything worthwhile with my life. “Why waste time on him ” they’d tease, watching me whistling through the lanes. “He’ll end up back on the farms anyway. Some boys are just weeds, amounting to nothing.” Even the cashew trees seemed to whisper it when the wind blew. It seemed the village had already written my fate.
But my mother, uneducated, visualised a different future, refusing to let the world bury me alive. Every time I collapsed onto the bed intending to skip school, she seized my arm and beat me until I got dressed. “You will not rot here!” she shouted, marching me to the classroom door and watching me enter, her shadow like a stubborn cashew tree.
This bad boy image troubled me. I didn’t believe I was a bad boy and never wanted to be one. These thoughts lingered in my mind, like mosquitos buzzing around our cashew apples. For years, I had been torn by this contradiction. Then, one evening, as I sat on the farm’s edge watching the sun bleed into the cashew fields, the truth bit harder than any insect: I was becoming exactly what they said—a boy with nothing. No respect. No future.

读后续写
It hit me that education was my only way out. Since then, I said goodbye to my bed to be the early bird every morning in my class and even stayed late at school after everyone left, my fingers marked with pen ink instead of dirt. While my old friends were stealing fruit, I was stealing time to study under the dim light of our oil lamp. I struggled for exams like hell and my grades inched up gradually until the day the university’s admission letter arrived. Clutching the letter, I dashed home excitedly and eagerly told my mom the great news. But as the rush of joy faded, I knew this paper was just the first step toward what awaited me in university life.
I put in some cashew seeds when packing and headed for the university. It was an eye-opener: lecture halls humming with debates, library shelves cradling with knowledge. When I mentioned the cashew trees of my hometown during my presentation, the blank yet fascinated expressions drew my thoughts back to the cashew seeds in my backpack, sparking my determination to research on this. Years later, my research received global recognition, but better than that was the proud moment when my mother, that same stubborn figure, held my papers up high to the neighbors. The former “bad boy” finally blossomed — not with mud, but with the seeds of perseverance.

W:You won the World Living Statue Championships recently. Could you tell us something about that
M: Um,for the World Championships, I was a stone statue and I painted in those tiny marks so that I looked like a kind of old, almost falling-apart statue, and I think the judges really appreciated that. W: Yep, I get it. So what is the point of doing this job
M: The point really is the connection you make with your audience. When you make a tiny movement, they tend to explode with laughter. And it's that interaction between the audience and the performer that's really what it's all about.
W: And what is the secret of being a good living statue
M: Firstly, never try and perform on an empty stomach. If you get hungry, you can start to feel light-headed, so you always need to eat something first. Well, good stomach muscles are key, too. You need to have them to hold those positions.

M: Hello, if you are looking for something fun to do, consider a quick weekend trip to somewhere in your local area. Here in the American Midwest near Chicago, there are a number of scenic places and picturesque towns. And they are only a one-to-three-hour drive away. Recently, our social group visited three small towns, Shipshewana, Nappanee, and Elkhart in northern Indiana. What we enjoyed most was seeing small towns with their quiet, slower- paced life. It was easy to locate a comfortable, inexpensive hotel there. We wandered the main street shopping areas and tried a variety of treats. The busy Saturday ended with snacks, drinks and conversations. We were then rewarded with a good night's sleep in the peaceful countryside. After a brief Sunday breakfast, we started our way back home. Each of us felt refreshed after this quick overnight trip.
