“When drinking with a paper straw, you’d better finish it as soon as possible,” said Jin Lin, 25, who works and
lives in Hong Kong, China, “or it will probably become soft quickly.”
This kind of thinking has been common since the introduction of the plastic straw ban (塑料吸管禁令) in
Hong Kong, China. The ban covers many single-use plastics such as plastic forks and plates. It began on 22 April
2024, which was also Earth Day.
But the new rule has caused some problems. On social media (媒体), people in Hong Kong, China, have
posted pictures of spoons going soft before they finish their soup. “When people went shopping, they used to get
plastic umbrella covers when they went into a shopping centre on rainy days. But now, that doesn’t occur anymore,”
said Jin. This can cause rainwater to fall from umbrellas, making the floors of the shopping centres wet. As a result,
people are more likely to fall.
“I think the new rule will affect tourists more, because hotels in Hong Kong, China, won’t give out free
disposable plastic products anymore,” said Zhou Yue, a 25-year-old who lives in Hong Kong, China. “Travellers
will need to bring their own toothbrushes and even toothpaste (牙膏).”
“In order to protect the environment and public health, we need to start to reduce the use of plastics,” said the
Environment and Ecology Bureau of Hong Kong, China, explaining the reason for the ban.
According to Ng Mee Kam of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the policy will have some growing pains.
The government has set the first six months after the introduction of the ban as an “adaptation period (适应期)”.
( )28. What’s the new ban in Hong Kong, China about A. People in Hong Kong, China stop using single-use plastics. B. People in Hong Kong, China should not throw away plastics.
C. Restaurants in Hong Kong, China won’t offer straws anymore.

A. Stop. B. Decrease. C. Improve. D. Happen.

A. There will be fewer tourists in Hong Kong, China.
B. Some people in Hong Kong, China don’t like the change.
C. Fewer people in Hong Kong, China will go shopping on rainy days.
D. More people in Hong Kong, China will choose to buy single-use plastics.
( )31. Which of the following may the government agree with

How do you usually sleep, on the stomach (趴着), on the back, or on the side Only 7% of the people sleep on
the stomach, most people sleep on the side, and about 38% of the people prefer sleeping on the back.
Sleeping on the stomach is believed to be the worst sleeping position. A stomach sleeper may feel pain in his
neck and shoulders. It requires turning the head in one direction or another while sleeping, which can bring about
neck pain. It also causes pain in the shoulders because a person naturally lifts his arms while he is sleeping, which
adds tension (拉紧) to the shoulders and arms.
Experts widely agree that sleeping on the back or the side is better than sleeping on the stomach. Back
sleeping is the best way to avoid adding pressure on the spine (脊椎). However, experts warn that it’s not the best
choice for people who struggle with snoring (打鼾) because it may crowd the airway.
If people see a tiger walking down the street, that will be terrible because the tiger is really dangerous. But
once it walks away, people may laugh because they feel relaxed. Bellieni said that this kind of laughter is seen as a
way to let others know that they are safe.
Meanwhile, sleeping on the side is considered the best choice for people with back or neck problems. Experts
say side sleeping also helps with breathing and posture. A person can make his posture more comfortable by
placing something soft between the knees.
Which side a person sleeps on matters as well. According to studies, sleeping on the right side is better for
people with heart problems because that position stops the heart from moving unnecessarily during sleep. For
people with digestion (消化) problems, sleeping on the left side is preferred because the position doesn’t add extra
pressure on the stomach.
In conclusion, deciding which position to sleep in is a “very personal decision.” After all, what works for one
person may or may not work well for others.
( )33. Which question does paragraph 2 answer
A. How many people like sleeping on the stomach
B. What are the advantages of sleeping on the stomach
C. Why do some people choose to sleep on the stomach
D. What problems does sleeping on the stomach bring about

A. Sleeping on the back. B. Sleeping on the left side.
C. Sleeping on the stomach. D. Sleeping on the right side.
( )35. What can a person sleeping on the side do to make himself more comfortable
A. Sleep on the left side. B. Turn his head to the right side.
C. Place a soft toy under his head. D. Put a pillow between his knees.
( )36. What is the best position for a person with digestion problems
A. Sleeping on the left side. B. Sleeping on the right side.
C. Sleeping on the stomach. D. Sleeping on the back.
( )37. What does the writer suggest at last
A. Choosing the sleeping position that works for yourself.
B. Doing some research before choosing a sleeping position.
C. It’s necessary to collect ideas before choosing a sleeping position.
D. You should make your decision without discussing it with others.

Resting my head on Helen’s shoulder, I put my arms around her waist. She drew me to her, and we rested in
silence.
We had not sat long before another person came in.
Some heavy clouds, swept from the sky by a rising wind, had left the moon bright; and her light, coming in
through a window near, shone full both on us and on the coming person, Miss Temple.
“I came on purpose to find you. Jane Eyre,” said she. “I want you in my room, and as Helen Burns is with you,
she may come too.”
We followed Miss Temple to her apartment. It had a good fire, and looked cheerful. Miss Temple told Helen
Burns to be seated in a low armchair on one side of the fireplace. Then, taking another armchair for herself, she
called me to sit beside her.
“Is it all over ” she asked, looking down at my face. “Have you cried your sadness away ”
“I am afraid I never shall do that.”
“Why ”
“Because I have been wrongly accused (指责), and you and everybody else, will now think me a bad girl.”
“We shall think you what you prove yourself to be, my child. Continue to act as a good girl, and you will
satisfy us.”
“Shall I, Miss Temple ”
“You will.” said Miss Temple, “You have been accused of lying when you were little. Tell us the truth, but add
nothing and exaggerate (夸大) nothing.”
I made up my mind that I would be most modest and most correct. Having thought for a few minutes about
where to start, I told her all the story of my sad childhood.
