On a very hot August day, I was camping near the wet Amazon rainforest in Brazil. At first, everything went
as planned. We put up a tent and moved our things inside. I have a feeling that something amazing might happen.
I needed to have a rest so I sat on a black stone. But it wasn’t a stone at all—it was a little baby chimpanzee
(黑猩猩)! I saw that the chimpanzee was in a strange state. It seemed as if it had a broken arm. So I put a banana
leaf around its arm. Then it went to another chimpanzee which I believed was its mother.
A few minutes later, I went to have a swim. I rushed to the river and happened to jump onto a log (木头). To
my surprise, the log under my feet moved. I was standing on a crocodile (鳄鱼)! It slipped slowly into the river and
started to swim. Suddenly, the crocodile turned over and I fell into the water. The next thing I saw was a huge
waterfall!
I fell down the waterfall and landed in a secret hole behind the waterfall! Then, I saw the sunlight on the other
side of the hole. It was a big hole! To my surprise, I found out that I was back to my tent. Nobody seemed to notice
me.

Laughter is a common way for humans to connect and build close relationships. Even babies laugh when
parents make funny faces and as we grow older, we learn to make others laugh, too. But is this ability only for
humans Scientists have noticed some animal behaviors that look like joking…
第 5页/共 17页
Have you ever seen a dog let people come close to its toy, and then playfully run away with it Biologist
Charles Darwin thought this might be a dog’s way of joking. Marc Bekoff, a biology teacher at the University of
Colorado, saw dogs playfully teasing (逗弄) each other by running closely then quickly away. His research shows
dogs just want to have fun or deal with stress.
In a 2024 study, Isabelle Laumer teams watched four apes (猿) and found 18 playful teasing behaviors. They
saw young apes softly move behind adults, and suddenly touch them to surprise them, then wait to see their
reactions—just like human children do. This suggests humor might have started early in our long history of
development.
What about laughing When playing, dogs make sounds similar to laughter. Dolphins make happy noises
while play-fighting. Mice even make joyful sounds when you tickle them, says Jeffrey Burgdorf from Northwestern
University.
But is this really humor Are the apes really joking or just wanting attention What would be the purpose of
animals teasing “For humans, humor helps break the ice and build relationships,” says Laumer. “We’re not sure if
it’s same in apes or other animals, but it’s possible.”
31. What is the article mainly about
A. How humans use laughter to make friends.
B. Different sounds animals make during play.
C. Whether animals have humor-like behaviors.
D. Ways to have less stress by laughter.
32. Why does the writer mention a dog let people come close to its toy
A. To tell how dogs play with humans.
B. To show that dogs enjoy running.
C. To explain dogs might joke like humans.
D. To compare dogs with other animals.
33. What does the underlined word “them” mean in the third paragraph
A. Human children. B. Young apes. C. Adult apes. D. Scientists.
34. Why do mice make joyful sounds according to Jeffrey Burgdorf
A. To hide their fear.
B. To show their laughter.
C. To communicate with humans.
第 6页/共 17页
D. To fight with other mice.
35. What might scientists study next according to the article
A. How human laughter develops in babies.
B. Whether animal teasing helps build relationships.
C. Why dolphins make happy noises while play-fighting.
D. The best ways to train animals to play.

Having a pet might not only improve your personal life but also help your career, says a new study ordered by
Banfield Pet Hospital and carried out by Kelton Global Research. The report, which included 857 working adults in
the U. S., shows strong connections between owning pets and doing well at work.
Interestingly, 93% of top company leaders (like CEOs and CFOs) said they had pets as kids, and 78% linked
some of their career achievements to those early years with pets. Of these leaders, 83% had dogs growing up, 59%
had cats, and 37% had other pets, showing many owned more than one type. Experts believe pets help build skills
needed for leadership, such as learning to be responsible, kind, focused, imaginative, and organized.
Brian Garish, president of Banfield, stressed how important pets are in shaping people’s lives: “From taking
care of pets as children to having them as adult friends, pets help form who we are and how we connect with others.”
The study also found that people who get pets later in life still gain work-related benefits. An impressive 86% of
current pet owners say their animals help them manage time better, stick to daily routines, and handle multiple
tasks more easily.
Another pet benefit is that pets also improve how workmates get along. Eight out of ten people said they feel
closer to workmates who have pets, and 79% think pet owners work harder. This “pet benefit” might come from
seeing pet owners as honest and approachable (平易近人的).
The results question the idea that career success comes only from formal (正规的) education or job training.
Instead, they show pets act as quiet teachers, helping people grow skills like teamwork, organization, management
and building trust. Whether through childhood memories or adult friendships, pets seem to offer a special way to
move forward in your job—showing that pets might be the best helpers in building a career.
36. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To discuss how owning pets can improve career success.
B. To explain why pets are important for children’s growth.
C. To compare different types of pets owned by company leaders.
第 7页/共 17页
D. To argue that formal education is less useful than pet ownership.
37. The underlined phrase “pet benefit” most likely means ________.
A. the cost of keeping a pet B. the difficulty of training a pet
C. the advantage pets bring to work D. the popularity of pets in offices
38. According to the study, people who own pets as adults are more likely to ________.
A. less focused on their jobs
B. be honest and friendly
C. prefer working alone rather than in teams
D. be short of formal job training
39. How does the author organize the information about pets and career success
A. By listing historical examples of pet owners.
B. By comparing opinions of CEOs and regular workers.
C. By showing research findings and expert explanations.
D. By describing different types of pets and their skills.
40. According to the study, what is one of the reasons why having pets helps career success
A. Pets teach people formal education skills.
B. Pets help develop leadership qualities.
C. Pets make people work longer hours.
D Pets make more money for people.

Hiking Along the Yellow River
Last week, our school organized a meaningful hiking activity along the Yellow River. We set off early in the
morning, walking along the riverbank while enjoying the breathtaking scenery. The golden sunlight reflected on the
water, and the gentle breeze made the journey refreshing. Along the way, we learned about the river’s history and
its importance to Chinese culture.
After the hike, I felt a deep connection with nature and a greater appreciation for our mother river. The
experience not only strengthened my body but also enriched my mind. I hope we can have more such activities in
