At first, I could hardly see anything. After moving down through dark, narrow caves, my
eyes were not used to the light. But when I could focus again, I stood in surprise.
“It’s a ... seal” cried.
“Yes. Axel,” my uncle said, “and I shall give it my name, as I discovered it!”
There was a great lake or even an ocean. The shore was covered with small shells where the
first living beings lived. Around this sea stood a huge rock wall.
I could see far over this great sea because of a strange light. Not sunlight, of course, as we
were deep below the surface. No; with its bright, clear whiteness, the light must have been electric
(电的).
We kept quiet inside a cave that must have been several miles high.
Human words cannot describe the discoveries of those who have been deep into the earth.
My imagination was powerless before such wonders. I felt surprised and quite scared at the same
time. However, the soft salty air cheered me up. After many days in much narrower spaces, it was
a great relief.
“Ready to walk a little now ” asked my uncle.
“Yes, certainly.”
“Well, let us follow the shore then,” he said, and we began to explore.
Soon in front of us appeared a forest with trees like umbrellas. “Mushrooms !” said
my uncle. And he was right! There were mushrooms in their thousands, and each at least nine
meters high. How excellent they were!
“Wonderful!” cried my uncle. “Now look under your feet.”
I hadn’t noticed the many bones under our feet as we walked. Suddenly I thought, if once
these monsters lived here, might some still walk through these dark forests I looked around
nervously, but we were the only living beings in this underworld. Thankfully!
Finally, we returned to the cave we had entered from, and I went to sleep with strange
thoughts. Where did this underground sea end Where would we go
(Adapted from Journey to the Center of the Earth)
28.Which of the following pictures can we add to the story

C.The girl was as brave as a lion when facing problems.
D.She sells special and stylish seashells by the seashore.
30.What is the right order of the story
①Axel and his uncle saw many mushrooms.
②Axel slept with strange thoughts.

⑤Axel and his uncle walked on the bones.
A.④③②①⑤ B.④③①⑤② C.③④②①⑤ D.③④①⑤②
31.Why did Axel’s feeling change so many times during the journey
A.Because the underground world was too dark.
B.Because he was unable to think in a clear way.
C.Because he was so tired that he wanted to sleep.
D.Because the journey was full of the unexpected.

All aboard! Let’s take a ride on the world’s highest railway the Qinghai-Xizang Railway.
Sit back and enjoy the journey. Get ready for the trip of a lifetime.
We’re leaving Qinghai Station. The scenery along the way is some of the wildest in all of
China. Keep your eyes open as we race through this beautiful land. You might see a chiru (藏羚羊)
from your window.
Before we begin our journey, let’s learn about this amazing railway. It’s truly one of the
greatest engineering wonders of the 21st century. When it was completed on July 1, 2006, the
Qinghai-Xizang Railway set in the world records, including the world’s highest railway at 5,072
meters above sea level, the world’s highest tunnel (隧道) at 4,905 meters, and the longest tunnel
ever built on permafrost (多年冻土).
As we travel higher, the air will get thinner and thinner. Soon there will only be 50 to 60
percent of the oxygen which is used for breathing. But don’t be afraid. Each railcar has two
separate oxygen systems. One system spreads oxygen throughout the train at all times. And each
passenger can also get a personal oxygen mask just like those used on planes.
Here are a few more things to think about as our train leaves the station. The designers
solved three main challenges when building this great railway. First, the high altitude (海拔) made
the task difficult because there was not enough oxygen. Second, much of the railway runs across
permafrost, a type of ground that keeps changing as the weather warms and cools. Finally, the
railway goes through some of the most sensitive ecology (敏感的生态环境) in China. Great care
was necessary to make sure of the smallest possible influence on nature.
All three challenges were met, making our trip possible. All aboard! The train to Xizang is
leaving in fifteen minutes.
32.Where are the passengers
A.On a plane. B.On a train. C.On a ship.
33.How does the passage show the railway is amazing in Paragraph 3
A.By telling a story.
B.By using a designer’s words.
C.By introducing its world records.
34.How many oxygen systems are there in each railcar
A.One. B.Two. C.Three.
35.Which of the following increased the difficulty of building the railway
A.The changing ground. B.The polluted air. C.The hot weather.

Lessons on My Farm
Three years ago, I started the “Farm Labour (劳 动 )” program. I wanted city kids to
experience what they enjoyed and learned on my farm. I host three or four kids at a time. Most of
them come for a week. Every morning, I take the kids through a two-hour hands-on farm class.
There is a lot to learn. For example, I don’t expect a child to know how long it takes for a
chick to hatch (孵化). But I’m often surprised when they don’t know how to pull a cart (手推车)
around a corner or climb over a gate.
Don’t get me wrong. I love educating kids and then cheering them on when they manage to
do these simple tasks independently. It’s just that, two generations ago, these skills were common
knowledge. City kids today rarely get to touch real tools or take on hard chores (农活). These
encounters (遭遇) can be unpleasant and even painful, so it’s understandable that parents want to
protect their children from them. The problem is, when they do, something necessary is lost.
Farms can also be dangerous. We’ve never had a serious injury, but many kids have been
stung (螯伤) by bees, pecked by a chicken, or kicked to the ground by a small naughty horse.
Children are often stronger than I think.
At first, I was worried the repetitive (重复的) chores would bore my young visitors, but
much to my surprise, the opposite is true. They find the chores fun and they need labour education.
When they come for return visits, as so many do, they eagerly ask me, “When do we get to dig out
the potatoes ”
36.What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A.City children. B.School teachers. C.Countryside farmers.D.Office visitors.
37.What can we infer from the last sentence in Paragraph 3
A.Too much homework changes everybody. B.Too many tools on the farm are
necessary.
C.Too much protection from parents is bad.D.Too many chores for kids is unimportant.
38.What is the meaning of underlined sentence “Don’t get me wrong.” in Chinese
A.我总是对的。 B.别让我犯错误。 C.我变得聪明了。 D.别误会我的意思。
