Bora Bora, French Polynesia
Shaped like a big hat, this volcanic island stars in many South Pacific daydreams. Fish, turtles and sharks swim in the clear waters. The island, of course, is clearly French, with mouthwatering food to match. Diving is excellent in the surrounding reefs, and hiking paths wind through the palm trees. Bora Bora is home to luxurious (奢侈的) resorts, where you can fall asleep to the gentle sounds of the sea.
Palawan, Philippines
The island of Palawan is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and is the Philippines’ answer to paradise. The most amazing area and what sets this island apart from others are the cliffs (悬崖) and beaches on the north end of Palawan, near the town of El Nido.
Seychelles, Kenya
This fairly untouched group of 115 coral and granite islands is full of attractions to visit, from UNESCO-listed jungles and lively coral reefs to beaches lined with palm trees. The Seychelles also feature some of the planet’s richest fishing grounds, making this a top destination for fishing lovers.
Santorini, Greece
The spectacular Santorini scores top points for its beauty. Blue-domed churches stand up against the shining sea. Other great attractions of Santorini include Akrotíri Archaeological Site, Ancient Thira, the black sand beach of Perissa, and of course, the extremely beautiful sunsets.

In South Africa, a former passenger train now serves as a travelling medical center to provide health services to people in need.
The train is known as Phelophepa, which means “good, clean, health”. It travels across South Africa to provide medical care to a mix of patients for whom usual health care is unavailable (难以获得的) or rare. The train has been operating since the early 1990s. The train carries medical professionals around the country, even to the most rural villages. Officials say the service helps at least 375,000 South Africans each year.
The care patients receive is different from the government’s main public health care system. That system serves an estimated 84 percent of the population. But government insurance plans are too costly for many people to pay for.
Thethiwe Mahlangu has used the health train and recently spoke to the media about her experiences. She said local health clinics in her area — in Tembisa — cannot effectively serve her needs. “There we are not treated well,” Mahlangu said. She noted that when people ask about such questions, the medical workers say they simply need bigger hospitals.
When the train began in 1994, many people in South Africa still lived in rural villages with little availability to health centers. The time was a period of great change in South Africa. Today, the train assists the growing populations of the capital, Pretoria, as well as Johannesburg, the country’s economic center.
Shemona Kendiah, the train’s manager, said that the train could remain in one place for lots of days to see as many people as possible. Those going to major population centers — like Tembisa — can end up staying up to two weeks.
The patient, Jane Mabuza, got a full health examination as well as services for her teeth. She believes the train will be able to reach many more people in other areas. “Here on the train you never hear that anything has been finished,” Mabuza added.
24. What challenge do many South Africans face in getting healthcare
A. Local health clinics refuse to treat them. B. The country lacks medical professionals.
C. The Phelophepa train cannot reach rural areas. D. Government insurance is not affordable for them.
25. Why does Mahlangu prefer the Phelophepa train to local clinics
A. Local clinics have no proper medical facilities. B. The train provides faster service than hospitals.
C. The train offers more specialized treatments. D. Local clinic staff often reject patients.
26. How does the author stress the impact of the Phelophepa train
A. Sharing fictional stories. B. Listing some medical terms.
C. Using direct quotations from patients. D. Comparing with other healthcare programs.
27. How does Jane Mabuza feel about the Phelophepa train
A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful. C. Disappointed. D. Indifferent.

In a world on fire and underwater, scientists have announced some good news: Several important tuna (金枪鱼) species have stepped back from the edge of extinction.
Two bluefin tuna species, a yellowfin, and an albacore are no longer seriously endangered or have moved off the leading international list of endangered species entirely.
The unexpectedly fast recovery speaks to the success of efforts over the past decade to end overfishing. But tuna are not the only species scientists are thinking carefully at the 2021 World Conservation Congress in Marseille, France, which is organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Researchers warn that many other sea species continued to be imperiled. For example, more than a third of the world’s sharks are still threatened with extinction due to overfishing, habitat loss, and climate change.
“I think the good news is that sustainable (可持续的) fishing industry are possible,” says Beth Polidoro, a biologist at Arizona State University. “We can eat fish without reducing the population to the point where it is on the road to dying out or extinction.” At the same time, she warns that the recovery should not encourage us to catch as many fish as we want. “We need to keep doing what’s working.” Polidoro adds.
The IUCN, which determines the world’s most endangered species on its Red List of Threatened Species, also announced at the meeting that some animals are moving in the other direction, onto the Red List. Like the Komodo dragon, an lizard (蜥蜴), it is at particular risk from climate change.
Of course, the work of protection is never over, and it will require close and continuous attention to make sure neither tuna nor Komodo dragons return to the edge of dying out. But for now, people can celebrate a few wins for the animal world.
28. What is the good news about tuna
A. They have been removed from the list of endangered species.
B. The fishing of tuna has been put to an end completely.
C. The population of some tuna species has recovered.
D. The number of some tuna species increases slowly.
29. What can we learn from Beth Polidoro’s words
A. We can fish tuna as much as we want. B. Protecting tuna is a long way to go.
C. We shouldn’t encourage tuna fishing. D. The population of tuna will reduce.
30. Why does the writer mention “the Komodo dragon” in paragraph 5
A. To introduce a topic. B. To make a comparison.
C. To explain an idea. D. To give an example.
31. What is the writer’s attitude towards the recovery of the tuna species
A. Positive. B. Concerned. C. Unclear. D. Doubtful.
D
City parks have long been a place for urban residents to get a small amount of green. As cities increasingly feel the impacts of rising seas and temperatures, people are rethinking the roles of urban parks.
All of the dark-gray asphalt (沥青) in cities collect heat. Dallas is one of the country’s fastest-warming cities thanks in part to its extensive impervious (不透水的) surfaces, but with a new $312 million bond package, the city is hoping to change that. Using satellite data, the city is able to see what neighborhoods most need the cooling effect of green spaces.
Cities are increasingly flooding and city planners think parks can help with this issue too. A report published in February by The Nature Conservancy looked at the best ways to deal with flooding in Houston, a city with many neighborhoods built on floodplains and regularly flooded by rising waters. Offering affected homeowners buyouts and transforming homes into green spaces would save more money than installing infrastructure (基础设施) like pipes, they found.
Brendan Shane, a climate program director, says parks can create opportunities for people to exercise and play, in addition to cooling neighborhoods and absorbing floodwater. “The stronger the bonds are from neighbor to neighbor, the better they are able to react to a shock,” he says.
“Not a single solution by itself will avoid the climate crisis. We see parks as an important part of it, but there isn’t a silver bullet,” says Diane Regas, CEO of The Trust for Public Land. “Parks are an example of what we in the environmental community need to do to reach solutions that address climate change at the same time and make people’s lives better.”
32. What does the city Dallas want to deal with
A. The lack of green spaces. B. The way of collecting heat.
C. The effect of rising seas. D. The bond between neighborhoods.
33. What can be inferred from the report by The Nature Conservancy
A. Cities in the world are frequently flooded. B. City parks may help prevent city flooding.
C. Cities needn’t invest much money in infrastructure. D. City parks affect people’s choice of a neighborhood.
34. What does Brendan Shane say about parks
A. They can enable people to get over a shock. B. They can reduce air pollution effectively.
C. They can perform positive social functions. D. They can help people to keep a cool head.
35. What does the underlined phrase “a sliver bullet” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. A fast and effective solution. B. A successful example.
C. An immediate and clear cause. D. An impractical method.

My parents ran a small grocery store near my house in San Francisco. They always kept a big box by the entrance where people could donate cans of soup and stuff to our local food bank.
“For some reason, our food-donation box just isn’t filling up lately, ”said my dad. “Maybe it’s time to think of a way to remind folks about the food bank, ” replied my mom. We talked about having fireworks, but Mom smilingly said it was a little outside our budget. Dad suggested a talent show because it was fun and people could pay for tickets with food donations. We all gladly agreed.
Word for the talent show got out. While my parents posted information online about the event, we kids made some signs. My friend Mareya came over to help out. “I’d like to do an act in the show, but I don’t know what to do, ” I told Mareya. “Well, since the food-bank thing is about sharing, ” said Mareya, “Why not write a song about that ” I told Mareya that writing a song was not a problem. But I’d be too nervous to sing it. Plus, I didn’t think I was good enough! She shrugged. “What if we sang it together ”
Since Mareya had the world’s prettiest voice and also happened to play the guitar, I agreed. The act would be a huge success. You wouldn’t believe how many people came by the store over the next week to sign up to perform: dancers, Hula-Hoopers, banjo players, comedians, poets, and a boy who did tricks with his adorable poodles Salt and Pepper!
Mareya and I practiced and practiced, and I was feeling pretty good about our act. But on the morning of the performance, Mareya called with bad news. She had a serious stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

“There’s no way I’m going on without you,” I told her. But Mareya insisted that I should perform alone. “You’ve practiced so hard, and the song is beautiful. The audience will love it,” she encouraged me. Though my heart was pounding, I decided to give it a try. As I stepped onto the stage, the spotlight felt blinding, and my hands trembled. I took a deep breath and began to sing. To my surprise, the audience started clapping along, and their smiles gave me the courage to continue. By the end of the song, the room erupted in applause. I couldn’t believe I had done it!
Once I was off the stage, ashamed, my mom wrapped me in a big hug. “You were amazing!” she said, her eyes shining with pride. I told her how nervous I had been and how I almost didn’t go through with it. “But you did, and that’s what matters,” she replied. Just then, Mareya called again. She had been listening to the performance over the phone and was thrilled. “I knew you could do it!” she exclaimed. The event was a huge success, and the donation box was overflowing with cans of soup and other items. I realized that sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to something truly special.
