Sign language is the main way deaf people communicate. Since they can’t hear, talking to hearing people can be hard. Luckily, sign language interpreters(口译工作者) are there to help.
Hao Shuxin, 24, sees sign language as her mother tongue(母语) as her parents are deaf. She picked up sign language before she could even talk. In 2018, she became a sign language interpreter at a law firm(律所) in Chongqing. Her work takes her to places like courts, where she interprets for deaf people.
Since sign language has fewer words, Hao often meets difficult legal terms that have no direct match. In such situations, she carefully breaks down the meaning for deaf people. There are also grammatical differences between Chinese and sign language. “For example, the words ‘put out a fire’ are signed as ‘a fire put out’ in sign language, as deaf people describe what they see first, ” Hao said.
Hao feels stressed at work because accuracy(准确性) is important in legal interpretations. Her anxiety also comes from the fact that sign language has “dialects”. The same word can be expressed with different hand gestures(手势) depending on where a deaf person is from. “For example, people in Inner Mongolia and Chongqing use different gestures for the word ‘true’, ” Hao explained. Having traveled to over 30 cities, she has learned about the unique ways deaf people across the country use sign language.
In her spare time, Hao reads many law books and talks with lawyers and her deaf co-workers to improve her professional ability. “My parents are deaf, so I understand the difficulties faced by the deaf community. I want to do everything I can to help them, ” Hao said.

B. Because she wants to be a sign language interpreter.

D. Because she studies in a special school.

A. The phrase “put out a fire” is signed as “a fire put out” in sign language.
B. The word “true” has different gestures in different places.

D. Deaf people describe things they hear first.
51. Why does Hao Shuxin feel worried about the “dialects” in sign language
A. Because she can’t understand the different dialects.
B. Because the same word may have different expressions.
C. Because there are too many dialects to learn.
D. Because deaf people don’t like her interpretations of the dialects.
52. What is the correct order of the text

②Hao Shuxin’s work challenges
③Hao Shuxin’s efforts to improve herself
④Hao Shuxin’s reason for helping the deaf community

Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, is one of the biggest and most important celebrations in India. It marks the victory of light over darkness and good over evil(邪恶). It gets its name from the row of clay lamps that Indian people light outside their homes. The festival is between October and November, but the date changes each year because the Hindu calendar follows both the moon and the sun.
Diwali is a five-day festival. Each day has its own special traditions. On the first day, people clean their homes and buy gold or kitchen utensils(厨房用具) to bring good luck. On the second day, people use clay lamps and colorful designs to make their homes prettier. The third day is the main day. Families pray(祈祷) to Goddess Lakshmi—the goddess of wealth, enjoy festive meals and light fireworks. On the fourth day, people visit friends and family with gifts and best wishes for the season. On the fifth day, adult brothers visit their married sisters, and the family shares a big meal.
Diwali is a happy time, but it also causes big environmental problems. Fireworks create a lot of air pollution, especially in northern India. They let out harmful chemicals(化学物质) and particles(颗粒). This year, pollution levels in New Delhi were 65 times higher than the World Health Organization’s limits(限制). This can lead to health problems like breathing difficulties and heart problems. Fireworks also create a lot of waste. Many fireworks can’t be recycled, so they end up in landfills(垃圾填埋场).

When autumn arrives in the US and Canada, you can see one of nature’s greatest scenes—the yearly migration of the monarch butterflies(帝王蝶).
No other butterfly in the world migrates like the orange and black monarch butterflies of North America. They cannot live for long periods in cold weather. For this reason, each autumn around October, millions of these beautiful insects begin a long and difficult journey. They travel up to 3, 000 kilometers south to spend the winter in warmer locations. Some even fly to the mountains of Mexico. There are so many of them that they almost block out the sky. You can even hear their wings beating.
It usually takes the butterflies two months to reach Mexico. After spending five months there, they head back north in the spring. But no butterfly can finish the whole round trip. They lay eggs along the way and die. Three generations(代) of butterflies will live and die during the spring journey alone. The fourth and final generation of the year is born in early autumn and will reach the north. But the butterflies hardly get to rest before starting the long journey south again to Mexico. The most amazing thing about these butterflies is that they return to the very same trees in Mexico that their great-great-grandparents used the winter before.
However, the population of this colorful butterfly has dropped in recent years. The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service said that nearly a billion monarch butterflies have disappeared from the overwintering sites(越冬地点) since 1990, reported The Washington Post.
In many of the places where the butterfly can be found, people are destroying the natural environment. One of the main reasons, experts say, is that farmers have used herbicides(除草剂) on plants that the monarch butterflies’ larvae(幼虫) live and feed on.
57. What makes the migration of monarch butterflies in North America
A. The search for new habitats. B. The coming of cold weather.
C. The need to find mates. D. The lack of food supply.
58. What happens to the butterflies during the migration
A. They all finish the whole round trip.
B. They lay eggs and die along the way.
C. They never lay eggs during the journey.
D. They rest a lot before starting the next journey.
59. How do the monarch butterflies navigate back to the same trees in Mexico
A. They follow a leader butterfly. B. They use the stars to guide their path.
C. It isn’t mentioned in the text. D. They rely on wind patterns.

A. Provide a general overview of monarch butterflies→Explain their migration→Describe challenges they face

Good morning, everyone. I’m Peter for the weather news. I hope you’re having a great Monday morning.
It’s going to be a beautiful day today — sunny with temperatures around 25 degrees. Be sure to wear your sunglasses and a hat. It will get hot in the middle of the day and cool at night. There will be no rain today, but there might be a little rain tomorrow. It will stay warm, though. There might be very bad weather later this week. On Friday and Saturday, we could have a lot of lightning and storms. So, you should stay inside as much as possible on those days. But today, the sun will be strong, and you should go outside! You could consider going to the park or playing sports with your friends.
That’s all for our weather news. Now over to Linda with this week’s talk show. Thanks for listening.

第八大题
Dear Frank,
I’m writing to tell you something about the class meeting held last week.
The topic was “Save the earth”, which mainly focused on the importance of protecting the environment. Here are the ideas of our class meeting.
Firstly, all of us agreed that it’s important for us to protect the environment, because protecting the environment is protecting ourselves.
Then we discussed how students can do it. For example, we should avoid littering to reduce pollution. We can make full use of our own bags instead of plastic bags when shopping. If everyone takes action right now, we can make a big difference to our nature!
What’s your opinion Look forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua
