where

On

In

Little

His

What

Once,

he

Smog

in
many
Chinese
cities.
But
it
seems
that
besides
wearing
a
mask
(口罩),
few
of
us
know
what
has
caused
the
smog
and
what
to
do
to
beat
it.
Chai
Jing,
a
former
news
anchor
with
China
Central
Television,
discussed
the
questions
in
her
documentary
Under
the
Dome.
The
103-minute
film
was
released
on
major
Chinese
video-sharing
websites
on
Feb
28.
In
the
film,
Chai
visits
polluted
places
and
talks
to
officials
and
scientists.
She
concludes
that
burning
too
much
coal
(煤)
and
oil
are
the
main
causes
of
PM2.5
and
smog.
To
make
things
worse,
according
to
Chai,
the
coal
and
oil
we
are
burning
is
of
poor
quality
and
don’t
meet
the
standards
(标准)
for
environmental
protection.
Therefore
they
have
produced
more
harmful
gas
and
particles
(颗粒)
to
pollute
the
air.
To
solve
the
problem,
Chai
suggests
that
we
should
clean
our
coal
and
oil
or
replace
them
with
cleaner
energy
such
as
natural
gas.
In
her
film,
Chai
also
emphasized
(强调)
that
ordinary
people
can
do
something
to
help
control
smog
too.
For
example,
we
can
live
a
greener
life
by
using
more
public
transportation.
Or
if
we
see
things
that
could
harm
the
environment,
we
can
try
to
stop
it.
In
one
scene
from
the
film,
Chai
sees
a
dirt
mound
in
a
building
site
exposed
in
the
air,
and
asks
the
person
in
charge
to
cover
it.
When
she
sees
a
restaurant
cooking
without
any
suitable
filter
facilities(过滤设备),
she
calls
the
hotline
12369.
The
restaurant
installed
the
filter
a
week
later.
Chen
Jining,
the
new
minister
of
environmental
protection,
praised
Chai.
“This
film
encourages
ordinary
people
to

with
the
environment.
This
is
what
we
need
in
the
future.”

Wild

could
be
important
carriers
of
deadly
bird
flu,
researchers
say.
Even
so,
experts
say
there
is
no
solid
basis
for
killing
wild
birds
to
protect
poultry
(家禽)
and
reduce
the
risk
of
human
infection.
The
European
team
researching
into
the
global
spread
of
the
H5N1
bird
flu
says
certain
duck
species
may
be
infecting
wild
bird
populations.
Geese
and
water
birds
are
also
possible
vectors
(带菌者)of
the
virus,
the
team
says.
The
team’s
study
was
led
by
Bj rn
Olsen
of
Umea
University
in
Sweden.
Olsen
runs
Europe’s
largest
wild-bird
flu
monitoring
program.
Studies
have
shown
that
bird
flu
viruses
in
lake
water,
generally
passed
through
bird
waste,
can
stay
infectious
for
up
to
30
days.
The
migration
or
feeding
behavior
of
dabbling
ducks
could
at
least
partly
explain
the
spread
of
the
H5N1bird
flu,
the
researchers
add.
This
group
of
duck
species
includes
mallards,
pintails,
and
others
that
feed
at
or
near
the
surface,
where
viruses
in
water
are
most
likely
to
be
picked
up.
Perhaps
as
a
result,
dabbling
ducks
have
the
highest
known
rates
of
bird
flu
infection,
the
study
says.
For
instance,
nearly
13
percent
of
mallards
tested
positive
for
bird
flu.
Other
species
tested
include
the
American
black
duck
(18.1
percent),
and
northern
pintail
(11.2
percent).
However,
it
seems
that
bird
flu
viruses
existing
in
ducks
doesn’t
usually
lead
to
severe
illness
and
death.
“Dabbling
ducks
are
for
sure
the
most
important
hosts
for
such
viruses,”
said
study
co-author
Ron
Fouchier,
a
scientist
at
the
Erasmus
Medical
Center
in
Rotterdam,
Netherlands.
“But
the
big
question
is,
how
can
we
make
sure
that
those
low-risk
viruses
won’t
become
very
dangerous
ones
in
the
future ”
In
poultry
bird
flu
viruses
can
change
into
more
dangerous
strains(型),
including
H5N1.
If
this
virus
then
finds
its
way
back
into
wild
populations,
the
birds
could
then
spread
the
disease
through
migration
(迁徙).
Some
scientists
have
argued
that
wild
birds
infected
with
H5N1
would
be
too
ill
to
migrate.
Swans,
for
instance,
appear
to
be
particularly
vulnerable
to
H5N1.
“Swans
apparently
drop
dead
quite
easily,
but
they
are
unlikely
to
be
the
vector
because
they
are
not
going
to
fly
very
far
if
they
are
dead,”
Fouchier
said.
But
the
study
team
says
that
some
birds
that
have
been
purposely
infected
in
the
research
show
that
wild
birds
can
survive
H5N1.
“For
some
reason
H5N1
has
adapted
so
it
no
longer
kills
dabbling
ducks,”
Fouchier
said.
This
means
the
ducks
may
be
able
to
spread
the
virus
over
a
wide
area.
The
study
team
says
geese
may
also
be
vectors,
because
they
often
feed
in
huge
groups,
a
practice
that
could
encourage
the
spread
of
the
virus.
Wild
ducks,
the
researchers
add,
“could
provide
an
intercontinental
bridge”
for
bird
flu
to
North
America,
which
has
not
yet
had
any
known
cases
of
H5N1.

You
should
not

that
everyone

Some

Usually,

Very

so

Libraries

There

Why
would

not
be

to
take
out

tell
him

You

regularly.
They
say
that
time
doesn’t
permit
them
to
do
this
or
just
because
they
feel
OK.
The
only
moment
they
go
to
the
doctor
is
when
they
really
feel
sick
or
they
find
the
medicine
doesn’t
work.
And
they
don’t
have
another
choice
but
to
ask
for
help
from
doctors.
The
result
of
this

is
that
some

which
is

Then,
others

they

because
they

to

medicine
instead,
while
they
don’t

And
how

Well,
just
think
that
your
health
is
the
most

Therefore,
choose
to
see
a
doctor
at
least
once
every
three

Especially,
don’t

we
should
also
avoid

Then,
our
physical
activity
should
be
on
the
way,
such
as
trying
to
go
jogging
at

or
choosing
